On March 5, 2014, at the age of 66, a literary critic and culturologist, winner of the Bunin Prize, brother of the philosopher Valery Lukov, Vladimir Andreevich Lukov, died.

The staff of the Institute for Fundamental and Applied Research of the Moscow University for the Humanities with the greatest regret announces the death at the age of 66 of the director of the Center for Theory and History of Culture of the Institute, the head of the scientific and educational center "Thesaurus Analysis of World Culture", a member of the editorial board of the journal "Knowledge. Understanding. Skill" ", our wonderful colleague and friend Vladimir Andreevich Lukov.

Vladimir Andreevich was born on July 29, 1948 in Moscow. He graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. V. I. Lenin (now the Moscow Pedagogical State University) (1969), in the same place - postgraduate studies (1975); candidate of philological sciences (1975); Doctor of Philology (1986); professor (1989); Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (1997). Since 1972, he worked at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (MPGU), including the dean of the Faculty of Philology, head. Department of World Literature, until now he was a professor of this department. In 1997-2004 - professor, chief Department of General Humanitarian Disciplines, Vice-Rector for Research of the Humanitarian Institute of Television and Radio Broadcasting. M. A. Litovchina.

Since 2004, Vladimir Andreevich has worked at the Moscow University for the Humanities, and since 2008, he has been the director of the Center for Theory and History of Culture at the Institute for Fundamental and Applied Research, Moscow State University. Since 1996 he has been a Corresponding Member, since 1999 an Honorary Academician, and since 2000 an Academician-Secretary of the International Academy of Sciences of Pedagogical Education. Since 2000, he has headed the Thesaurological Research Center of this academy. In 2004 he was elected an academician of the International Academy of Sciences (IAS, headquarters in Innsbruck, Austria).

Vladimir Andreevich Lukov was the largest specialist in the field of foreign literature research, as well as the theory of literature, Russian literature, theory and history of world culture, psychology, sociology of culture, aesthetics, culture of speech, teaching methods in higher education, organization of science and education, scientific organization of labor . He published over 800 scientific and scientific-methodical works.

Vladimir Andreevich developed a historical and theoretical method of philological research and applied it to the analysis of French drama at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries; he substantiated the division of the cultural process into stable and transitional periods, revealing the cyclicity in the development of literature, proposed methods for studying transitional aesthetic phenomena, and developed the ideas of literary synthesis. He is the author of the fundamental work "History of Literature. Foreign Literature from the Beginnings to the Present Day" (Moscow, 2003), which went through 5 editions. In the scientific community, it is deservedly regarded as a new word in the humanities. It outlines the theory of the history of literature, presented as an emerging special field of philology. This concept is implemented on the material of the world literary process from the first monuments of writing to the literature of the 21st century. Vladimir Andreevich specifically studied the genesis of genres, genre systems, trends, currents, movements in literature, theory and history of theater and dramaturgy. Together with his brother Valery Andreyevichemon, he put forward and substantiated a general humanitarian thesaurus approach, which was applied by the authors to characterize a wide range of phenomena of world culture (summary work: Lukov Val. A., Lukov Vl. A. Thesauri: the subject organization of humanitarian knowledge. M., 2008) . Vladimir Andreevich conducted a comprehensive study of the European culture of the New Age, pre-romanticism, romanticism and neo-romanticism (philosophical and aesthetic foundations, literature, theater, fine arts, architecture, sculpture, music, life). His monograph "Pre-romanticism" (M., 2006) was noted in numerous reviews as an in-depth study that consolidated the term "pre-romanticism" in science. Along with this, he deeply studied the history of French literature and culture (final work: Lukov Vl. A. History of French literature. In print).

One of the central themes of Vl. A. Lukov was the work of Shakespeare. He revealed the meaning of the term "Shakespeareanization" for European literature of the 18th-19th centuries. (pre-romanticism, romanticism), took an active part in the formation of the electronic resources "Russian Shakespeare" and "The World of Shakespeare", in holding scientific conferences "Shakespeare's studies" (since 2005), Shakespeare's readings (since 2007). He was a member of the Shakespeare Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Born on the same day as their twin brother Valery Andreevich Lukov, they spent their whole lives together - in science, in education.

Just a few days ago, on February 28, IFPI Moscow State University and the journal "Knowledge. Understanding. Skill", to which Vladimir Andreevich devoted a lot of energy, celebrated the 10th anniversary of its foundation. Being in the hospital for examination that day, he conveyed warm greetings and congratulations to all of us.

Yesterday we were all waiting to hear Vladimir Andreyevich's always cheerful, albeit a little tired, voice over the phone again, to receive a lot of e-mails from him on a variety of issues - on articles, authors, scientific projects, were waiting for him to appear at the institute, encouraging us all and infecting us with optimism, incredible performance ...

We all loved Vladimir Andreevich - we loved unconditionally, sincerely, like a human being - as the wisest mentor, reliable friend, the most beautiful person and a real Scientist, from whom they took an example.

He was a pillar of our institute, a support for all of us.

The whole depth of our grief can probably be conveyed in only two words: we are orphans ...

We offer our deepest condolences to our colleagues Valery Andreevich Lukov, Sergei Valeryevich Lukov, Natalya Igorevna Lukova, the entire large Lukov family, and all the relatives and friends of Vladimir Andreevich.

The Song of Roland is the most significant monument of the medieval French heroic epic. Of great interest is the epic world — a thesaurus construction similar to the picture of the world in a cultural thesaurus, which, unlike it, is fixed in a written artistic form — words, images, plot. But just like in the picture of the world, the epic world of a medieval monument has its own space and its own time, its own laws, stable supports of the text, eternal images and a mobile (improvisational) environment.

Symmetry. One of the features of the artistic space of the Song of Roland is its symmetry. There are many examples of symmetry (in particular, the same structure of the court of Charles and Marsilius, the same weapons, similar behavior, similar organization of councils, embassies, etc., finally, mutual language enemies, allowing them to understand each other both in negotiations and on the battlefield).

Heterogeneity of the epic world. but common property The epic world is determined not by a tendency towards symmetry, but, on the contrary, by a tendency towards asymmetry, heterogeneity. This heterogeneity does not deprive him of harmony, because it does not introduce dissonance and chaos. The heterogeneity of the epic world stems from the uniqueness of the evaluative position - the position of the people themselves.

Note that the forces in the struggle are almost always unequal, the heroes have to fight with superior forces, with a more powerful opponent. 20,000 Frenchmen, led by Roland, are fighting against 400,000 Moors. Charles leads 10 regiments, in which there are over 350 thousand soldiers, against 30 regiments of pagans, in which there are over one and a half million people. Roland alone fights 400 Saracens. Karl fights with Baligan, who has such a heavy spear that "the tip of a mule can hardly be driven"; thin Thierry fights a huge Pinabel, etc. But the heroes who retain natural human proportions invariably turn out to be winners or (if minor characters) deal a lot of damage to the enemy.

Another manifestation of the heterogeneity of the epic world is the different material density of people and objects. One can notice a trend: the body of a Frenchman has a greater density, impenetrability than the body of an Arab. The Moor is, as it were, empty inside, so the spear easily passes through him and even knocks out his spine, the sword cuts the Moor in half. In contrast, the bodies of the French are comparatively impenetrable. The invulnerability of the hero's body and the permeability of the body of his enemy is a very ancient feature of the epic world (cf. the fight between Achilles and Hector, Cuchulainn and Ferdiad). The image of Roland is especially important in this respect. His body is, as it were, bewitched for enemies, he is "never hurt." Objects can also have the ultimate material density. This is especially true of Durandal's sword, which does not splinter on stone, despite all the efforts of Roland, who does not want his sword to fall into the hands of the enemy.

In describing the death of heroes, another side of the heterogeneity of the epic world is revealed, namely, axiological heterogeneity. Olivier was killed in the back, Gauthier and Turpin - with spears thrown at them, the Moors throw spears and arrows at Roland. The French, on the other hand, never stab in the back, do not throw spears and arrows. So, there is a division of blows into noble (from above and in front) and ignoble (from behind and from afar). Other examples of axiological heterogeneity: Charles sends an embassy without secret goals, Marsilius - with secret goals; the Moors choose an ignoble position for battle (the gorge gives them an advantage), Charles's troops are fighting with Baligan's troops on a vast flat area. The heterogeneity of the epic world is expressed here in the fact that a blow is not equal to a blow, right is not equal to right, god is god, everything must be tested for truth. The dying French do not renounce their god, the dying Arabs overthrow their gods. Two outwardly equivalent rights (vassal and the right to strife, state and tribal) are tested by God's court, and it shows the superiority of one right over the other. Here, the source of the victory of heroes over the strongest enemy is revealed - rightness. In the epic world, rightness is not only and not so much the consciousness of the correctness of one's actions, but a materialized quality, fused with physical strength, with character. Or, in other words, rightness is the very heroic state of a person, which is why even all religious motives are concentrated not on heaven, but on the state of rightness. Man is independent in the epic world from the sky. On the contrary, the deity and nature are put to the test, playing a dependent (not on the person, but on his rightness) role. Nature either tests the heroes (by the unequal positions in the gorge), or helps them (the day comes for the right fight to begin, the night is always a way to stop the fight), or weeps for the heroes. Nature is not separate from man. Therefore, it would be useless to study it using the concept of "landscape". The landscape cannot stand out from the description until the alienated look of man appears on nature. The only case when nature did not respond to the epic necessity of the actions of the heroes is described in tirade 178 - the coming night prevents the French from avenging Roland. But "God performed a miracle for the sake of Karl / And the sun stopped in the sky." What is unusual in this episode is not a miracle, but precisely the fact that, regardless of the right person and in spite of his rightness, the sun has set. However, this episode is also explained by the heterogeneity of the epic world, the need to verify the correctness through the test of God and nature.

So, in the epic world of the "Song of Roland" two main trends are revealed: a craving for uniformity, symmetry, the origins of which are in variable repetition as main line epic-improvisational style, and heterogeneity, inequality arising from the uniqueness, absolute fixedness of the assessment (only from the point of view of the people or social group that creates the epic).

Hyperbolism. The contradiction of these tendencies is removed due to the special deformity of the epic world, which is based on hyperbolism, which differs from titanism in the loss of the direct meaning of exaggeration. Therefore, the scale that restrains the size of enlargement disappears, the volumes reach unimaginable values, but listeners should not believe in them directly, the hyperbole acts as an indirect image of more real world. Titanism built on direct meaning increase, would require the enlargement of the hero along with the enemy. This, as has been shown, does not occur. Huge size in its direct meaning loses its appeal, and such a feature as "half a foot between the eyes" can only belong to a Saracen. However, titanism is still the true (but abstracted, indirect) meaning of hyperbolism. This is where the nature of the difference between epic hyperbolism and literary hyperbole is rooted. In literature, hyperbole serves to highlight an object, phenomenon, character, while in the folk epic everything is hyperbolized, and a separate hyperbole does not highlight anything, it is only a sign general concept world, deformed by titanic hyperbolism in its fundamental principle.

Combat as a state of the epic world. All the features and properties of the epic world of the "Song of Roland" (symmetry and heterogeneity, hyperbolism, etc.) are most clearly manifested in the scenes of struggle, battle, duel, dispute. In The Song of Roland, struggle appears as a permanent state of the epic world. None of the characters are participating in combat for the first time. Before the battle, the hero can live as long as he likes (Karl is 200 years old, Baligan is older than Homer and Virgil, etc.). In battle, it is instantly decided whether to live or die. A specific character often does not want to fight, fight: Marsilius does not want to fight Charles, Charles - with Marsilius, Ganelon is afraid of the "diplomatic battle" - the embassy, Roland considers his appointment as a rearguard a betrayal of Ganelon, Olivier suggests blowing a horn to avoid a massacre, Karl in the final tirade he must fight again, but: “The king does not want to go to war. // He says: "God, how bitter is my lot!" - // Tears his gray beard, cries mournfully ... ”(here and in the future, translated by Yu. Korneev). A character engages in combat, becomes a hero or hero's enemy, exits the combat, either victorious or dead, but the combat continues. So, the struggle as a permanent state of the epic world, manifesting itself only through a person and spheres subject to him, does not depend on specific participants or on the means of its conduct, it has an indefinitely personal character. This may explain the obscure last tirade of the "Song of Roland", which contradicts both the idea of the victory of Christianity over paganism, and the plot, according to which the battle was fought with all the forces of the pagan world. The appearance of some new pagans, again threatening Christians, can be explained by the irremovable, eternal state of struggle in the epic world of the Song of Roland and the indefinitely personal nature of this struggle.

Hero in an epic world. In this regard, the problem of the hero in the "Song of Roland" arises, the question of a personal, individual beginning. Artistic media in the outline of an individual person are not yet developed. The portrait did not stand out from the description and assessment, usually the appearance of the hero is merged with his weapons, with his action (putting on armor). The items used in combat are often more individualized than the characters. The characters of the main characters - Roland and Olivier - are variations on the general type of the epic hero in his ideal sound. The "violence" of the hero is an older feature (cf. the images of Gilgamesh, Achilles, Cuchulin, Svyatogor), "prudence" is a new characteristic of the epic hero. In any case, the hero has not yet been singled out from the mass of people, and the mass has not been dismembered at all. Thousands of people perform the same action together, not leaving the hero alone: “Once in the heat, Marsilius of Saragossa // He went to look for coolness in the fruit garden // And there he lay down on a marble bed. // Around - the Moors: twenty thousand of them and more. A similar scene at the court of Charles is depicted in tirade 8 (around Charles - 15 thousand people). In tirade 206, Karl mourns for Roland: “The king is tearing his hair out in despair. // A hundred thousandth army mourns all around, // No one is able to hold back tears. In the last phrase and in many other places (Tir. 138, 147, 150, 198, etc.), the public nature of emotional life is revealed (the heroes cry in front of everyone, tear their hair, faint, get angry, insulted, etc. ), which does not involve internal, hidden experiences, and an extraordinary intensity of emotions corresponding to the intensity of the epic world (a state of struggle). The tension of the forces of the heroes increases from minor to major. Roland dies not from wounds, but from the greatest exertion.

In the "Song of Roland" the first signs of the identification of personality, individuality appear. In tirade 139, Roland says: "Barons, your death is my fault: / After all, I did not save you and did not save you." A sense of personal guilt, responsibility is one of the features of this process. However, the personal beginning is not yet recognized. A hero (especially a king) rarely makes a decision without advice. Hence the great role of the council as an element of the epic narrative.

The personal principle (as the evil principle) triumphs in Ganelon, but he does not lose the impersonal, social principle either. Therefore, his image is bifurcated, which is especially noticeable in the episode of the embassy of Ganelon. First, he acts as a statesman, fully performing the function of an ambassador, then - as an individual person, colluding with the Moors. The duality of behavior here is explained by the combination of two functions in the person of Ganelon (as an ambassador he must negotiate, as a traitor he must change).

Hero replacement. In connection with the question of the functions of the characters, the problem of the replacement of heroes must be considered. Feudal relations such substitution is recognized. Ganelon responds to Roland's proposal to go as an ambassador instead of him: "To me," Ganelon said, "you are not a substitute: // I am not your lord, and you are not a lenient." Therefore, a vassal could replace Ganelon. After the death of Roland and Olivier, Karl replaces them with other warriors. The functions and attributes of even the most important heroes are transferred to others. Formally, Ginemann took the place of Roland. However, with the entry into the battle of Charles, the function of Roland passes to the king. Therefore, Hinemann disappears from the narrative (dies - tir. 250), all the fullness of the heroization of the commander and the bravest warrior passes to Karl. Similarly, Marsilius is replaced by Baligan, Marsilius' nephew is replaced by Baligan's son, etc. Thus, the indefinitely personal character of the epic world is coordinated with the replacement of heroes while maintaining their functions.

The features of the epic world of the "Song of Roland" are in many ways typical of the medieval heroic epic, primarily in those aspects that go back to folklore. The further any monument is separated from folklore, the more the author's beginning is in it, the less stable are the features of folklore by their nature that we have considered.
