The most interesting fact about Africa: features, history and reviews

culture

Africans are often annoyed by not knowing basic things about them, in the article below I would like to tell a little at least a little about real Africa.

Facilities mass media become a real disaster when it comes to Africa, as they show only barren deserts, starving people and animals. If you are deceived by these delusions, then blame the media for everything.

10. Africa is a country

Africa is not a country, but a continent. In fact, it is the second largest and second most populous continent after Asia. More than 1 billion people live in Africa, and 61 states are located on its territory. So to end this misconception, Africa is definitely not a country!

9. Africa is a desert

Despite the fact that there are still several deserts in Africa (for example, the Sahara desert in North Africa and the Namib Desert in the southwest), but much of Africa, especially central Africa, is rainforest. In addition, large areas in Africa are occupied by savannahs and prairie-like plains. So Africa is definitely not just a desert.

8. Africans live in huts

Many people believe that all Africans live in dirty huts full of manure. It has nothing to do with how the situation really is. Every African country has many cities full of residential buildings. This also does not mean that there are no people in Africa who live in huts, they are, because there are tribes who prefer to traditionally live in villages in makeshift buildings, but the bulk of the countries have become pro-Western and civilized. And in Africa, you will find landscapes that spoil the view of megacities and skyscrapers.

7. Weird Foods

There is some truth in this misconception, however, nothing like what most people think. First of all, not all food in Africa is weird. In many African countries, it will not be difficult to find fast foods KFC and McDonald. There are a lot of restaurants in Africa where you can order juicy steaks, seafood, pizza, pasta, hamburgers and any other food familiar to Europeans. One of the most popular family meals in southern Africa is "braai", which in plain language means classic barbecue. The tribal people still hunt game, and in some cases they feed on worms, which, however, are not found in the civilized part of Africa.

6. "Wild" pets

Does a small lion cub live in your house, or maybe an antelope runs along the street outside your windows? Or maybe a bear lives next to you? Of course not, because there are as many wild animals roaming the city in Africa as in New York. Wild animals are outside the cities and settlements. Animals living outside cities and towns are completely wild, and even in exceptional cases, when a wild animal is "raised" by a person, it still remains wild, in other words, even a tame lion is still a lion. Therefore, there are no wild animals that freely roam the streets of African cities.

5. Technological voids

This is one of the funniest moments. Many people are surprised when they find out that Africans have computers and even know what they are. Africa has almost everything that exists in the civilized world, it's just that all innovations come to the continent with some delay. No, Africa is not stuck in a technological void.

4. African language

Africa is a continent where hundreds of various languages. For example, Namibia alone has 20 national languages, including German, English, Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, Portuguese, Himba, Nama, San, Okavango and Dammara. There are at least five languages in every country in Africa, and in fact many languages have their own dialects, but it's not like everyone speaks the same language.

3. Few hotels

There is a lot of confusion on this issue. To understand this issue, let's use the site agoda.com, and see what it gives for the query "hotels South Africa". The following results were obtained: Johannesburg - 62, Cape Town - 84, Durban - 52, Knysna - 56, Port Elizabeth - 39, Umshlanga - 31, Nelspruit - 17, Germanus - 31. In total - 372 hotels in the South Africa, given the fact that the hotels were only listed on one site, so it's safe to say that there are many hotels in Africa. Moreover, it is worth noting that accommodation in a luxurious Hilton in Africa will not be a problem either.

2. Lack of toilets

Every country has its own "taste" for toilets. In every state, toilets can be compared in some way with the level of culture. American toilets are full of water, Italian toilets have a platform located at the front of the cabin with a small opening full of water located at the back. Thai toilets, especially outside the cities, are just a hole in the floor without any seating. With that said, toilets in Africa are pretty normal. They have a sink, a seat, a little more water than the Italians and a little less than the Americans.

1. Black Africans

For all those who believe that all African people are black, it is worth considering whether all Americans are indigenous to the country? Hundreds of years ago, European explorers, conquerors and settlers traveled all over the world and settled in the developed lands. This happened everywhere, including North America, South America, Asia and Africa. The first white people to settle in Namibia, for example, were the Portuguese, and they did so over 400 years ago. Dutch settlers went to South Africa, French settlers settled in Angola, and so the number of white people living in Africa has grown significantly over the past 500 years. South Africa, in particular, among other things, is home to a large number of Indians, Chinese and Malaysians. South Africa is the nation of the rainbow. African is not a race!

Not everyone African peoples there is even a word for love. However, you can have a lot of synonyms in your vocabulary, but not know the whole inspiring meaning of love. A young Nigerian or Cameroonian would never tell a girl mother tongue: "I love you", although he may be crazy about her. So, there is no word "love" in the conversation of two Yoruba lovers - the word "friendship" is equivalent to it.

Loyalty to the family takes the place of love, - the Senegalese writer and film director Semben Ousmane told me.

According to the concepts of an African, love is just a word, although in life he can fall in love many times. For the village, polygamy is a guarantee of obtaining offspring, labor, and a woman, in essence, acts not as a loved one, but as an instrument for the reproduction of the family.

A Negro never says, “I love you,” says Cameroonian journalist Edoge. - It's good for a European. Note that an African can also be in love. But in our country this is regarded rather not as love, but as devotion.

However, your Matalina is in love with you. It catches the eye. She prepares various delicious things for you, starts laughing as soon as you open your mouth. She doesn't take her eyes off you when you say something, I half object.

Better ask her what love is, but remember: we Africans are puritans at heart, we are for strict, chaste relationships and look askance at the sensual demonstrative manifestation of love. This is not hypocrisy, but a moral principle.

For me, love is happiness, - Matalina laughs embarrassedly. - And it is not necessary to kiss and hug every now and then. We don't like to talk about it at all. The main thing is to value each other.

I recently met a wonderful girl, mother of two boys and owner of a cosmetics boutique. And immediately got the idea to interview Natalia. I already have a professional deformity, it seems. Or just the glory of Posner does not give rest. The fact is that Natalia lives with her family in Ghana. Do you know where it is? I didn't know before either. It's in Africa. Yes, where there are crocodiles, sharks and gorillas! It turned out to be a very interesting conversation about life, love, children and African myths.

About African myths and delusions

Inna: Natalia, you live with your husband and children in Africa, in Ghana. For the vast majority of Russians, Africa is a large and poor continent, full of diamonds, wars and AIDS. We know little about Africa, and if anyone has been there, it is only in Egypt and Tunisia in tourist reservations. So you can say you live on another planet! Tell us how you got to Africa, why did you choose Ghana for life, how many years have you been living there?

Natalia: In Africa, or rather in its western part, I got, like most of our compatriots, out of great love. Five years ago, I married a student from Ghana who was studying in St. Petersburg at the time. Before meeting my future husband, I probably never heard of such a country! I have been able to visit Ghana four times since then, and have been living here permanently for two years now.

Inna: What myths about Africa turned out to be true, if any? And what ideas are completely untrue?

Natalia: In the minds of our compatriots, Africa is some kind of one whole, as if a single country. In fact, this is a continent that brings together many of the most different countries and peoples. Traditions, climate, standard of living and appearance local residents not only varies from one country to another. Often within one state they live completely different people completely different.

Therefore, many of the ideas that we have about Africa may be true for one country (or one particular people) and completely wrong for another. Speaking specifically about Ghana, yes, it is hot and there are many different insects, bananas grow here, and the skin of the locals is black. This country is quite poor, there are problems here, but its inhabitants live in modern cities, drive cars, wear ordinary clothes; the capital has good roads, hotels, supermarkets. There is a lot of greenery and flowers, fruit trees bear fruit twice a year. And if you wish, you can live with the usual comfort.

About life and love in Africa

Inna: Natalia, what do you like about life in Ghana? What admires? And what, on the contrary, causes rejection and misunderstanding?

Natalia: I compare our life in Ghana with life in the Russian provinces. Here, goats and chickens walk the streets, people live in private houses, but they grow vegetables and fruits on their plots, it is always warm and there is a lot of sun here. I like this kind of life, and it seems to me that these are good conditions for our children.

The Ghanaians are very friendly, affable people, for the most part I feel comfortable with them. Of course, they, their way of life, traditions, culture are very different from what I'm used to.

There's a lot I can't understand, a lot I can't accept. For example, their love for loud conversations and noise in general. If music, then loud, if communication, then in raised tones.

Ghanaians don't care at all environment. They litter a lot, but trees, bushes, flowers are cut down, pulled out. I will never understand this.

Here they are calm about broken promises. A friend can promise help, and then turn off the phone and the abyss. You need to react calmly to this. Also in Ghana, corruption is high even at a simple household level - it is customary to ask here and it is customary to give here.

Inna: Natalia, are your children bilingual? Or maybe they know more than two languages? The younger one is still small, but what language does the older one prefer to communicate in?

Natalia: In the family, we communicate mainly in English, and with the children I speak Russian. Also around us there is a third language - local. The eldest son recently turned three years old, and he is just starting to speak in phrases, build simple sentences. If we lived in Ghana continuously, I think he would already speak English, but due to several moves, he had the opportunity to live in different language environments. Now he begins to distinguish between two languages, often calls one object with two words, and also begins to determine with which parent, in which language he needs to speak.

Honestly? I am not taking any special action to develop his bilingualism, I think a bilingual environment will do its job.

Inna: How do family, friends and acquaintances feel about your marriage and life in Ghana? What advice can you give to girls who marry a man of a different nationality, with a different skin color or eye shape?

Natalia: In Russia, I had to deal with negativity and even threats, but mostly they were virtual threats in social networks. As for real life, the children and I invariably arouse interest. People ask how we live in Africa, what it is like to be the wife of an African, and also, so to speak, sympathize with me, because in Russia there are many stereotypes about such marriages. You get tired of such attention, but it is expected, you need to be ready for it.

At first, my parents were wary of my choice, but over time they accepted my husband and children. Maybe I'm just lucky? Everyone's situation is different, a lot depends on the environment.

About African beauty

Inna: As far as I know, you have a beauty shop. Please tell us about African beauty - how do women take care of themselves, what is considered beautiful and fashionable? What have you taken note of and what do you use yourself?

Natalia: African beauty for the European look is, first of all, exotic. African women love everything bright, catchy, and this, of course, suits them. But with their hair, frankly, they were not lucky. Rigid, grow slowly, form a cap of tight springs on the head and require special, thorough care. Therefore, African women have several options: wig / hair extensions (some of them cost from $ 300), African braids, relaxers (special products that straighten hair), or a clipper haircut.

African skin is naturally drier, so local women always use body creams. But due to the high content of melanin, it is less susceptible to age-related changes.

While living in Ghana, I had the opportunity to try many natural skin and hair care products. Shea butter (karite), cocoa butter, coconut oil, which is now popular, as well as African black soap, which you will no longer want to return to your usual cosmetics, are produced here. 100% natural in composition, it can solve many problems of the skin and even hair.

About African cuisine

Inna: It is very interesting to learn about the cuisine of Ghana. What are the national dishes? share simple recipe? Do you cook traditional African food or do you cook borscht and porridge in the first place, as in your homeland?

Natalia: In Ghana, you can find almost all the products we are used to, especially in the capital. The only question is their price. But I have never been a big fan of Russian cuisine, so at home we mostly eat Ghanaian. Only occasionally do I cook European dishes, like spaghetti.

The local cuisine is very specific, you need to get used to it. One of the most popular dishes in Ghana is fufu (accent on the last syllable). It is made from boiled cassava, yam and plantain, which are pounded in a special mortar until smooth and served with spicy meat or fish soup. The fufu itself resembles raw dough in consistency, and is eaten with your hands.

People in Ghana eat a lot of rice. A dish called Jolof rice is very popular. It is similar to our pilaf, and it can be prepared from the products we are used to.

Jolof Rice Recipe

So, we need:

  • 200 g long grain rice (ideally jasmine rice)
  • 1 large tomato, 1 medium onion, 1 bell pepper - mashed in a blender
  • 1 hot pepper (or less, to taste)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (usually take more)
  • 1 medium onion (cubed)
  • 2 minced garlic cloves
  • 200 ml broth
  • Bouillon cube maggi (usually shrimp flavored, you can use chicken, or do without it)

Pour vegetable oil into a cauldron, fry onion and garlic until golden brown. Add tomato puree and chopped hot pepper, simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add broth and spices, bring to a boil.
Spread rice on top, cook over medium heat until cooked.

Rice is served with a piece of well fried chicken, a salad of fresh vegetables, and you can add a boiled egg to the serving, they love to put them everywhere!

About tourism, safety and prices in Ghana

Inna: Ghana is a tourist country or not? How developed is tourism there, if developed at all? Are there hotels, entertainment? Does it make sense to come to Ghana for those who want to grab exotics, but are not ready for extreme sports?

Natalia: Tourism in Ghana is poorly developed. There are good hotels, but very expensive. Attractions are scattered around the country, there are no organized tours. What attracts tourists to Africa? Safari and primitive tribes. There are no tribes in Ghana, and the national park, where supposedly there are elephants and other animals, is far from the capital. In Ghana, of course, there is something to see, but tourists bypass it, preferring the countries of West or South Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa), where tourism is much better developed.

Ghana is located on the Atlantic coast, but the ocean is restless here, so a beach holiday is good only for surfers. There are districts in the capital where rastamans gather by the ocean and smoke weed. It is also a kind of tourist attraction.
Otherwise, people come to Ghana for work or as missionaries.

Inna: How to get to Ghana?

Natalia: Unlike many African countries, getting to Ghana is not so difficult and not so expensive. Moroccan and Egyptian airlines fly from Moscow (the most budget options). From St. Petersburg, Emirates and Turkish Airlines have the best deals.

Inna: Is life expensive in Ghana? It is clear that everyone has their own concepts of expensive and cheap. But if we compare spending in St. Petersburg on food and housing and spending in Ghana, which is more profitable?

Natalia: Among African countries, Ghana ranks third in terms of food prices. Often, imported products are cheaper than locally produced products. This is due to the fact that farmers work the land by hand, harvest their crops by hand and try to sell them for the best possible profit.

If housing here is relatively inexpensive, then utilities are many times more expensive than in Russia. Add to this the almost non-existent free healthcare and weak free education.
In a word, with very modest salaries, life here is very expensive.

Inna: How safe is it to travel to Africa? After films like Blood Diamond, most people have the impression that all of Africa is in total chaos. This is hardly the case. What countries or areas would you recommend for independent tourism?

Natalia: Of course, in many African countries there are security problems, in some there are often civil unrest and even civil wars. But not in all. Ghana, for example, is usually in good standing with visitors - it is relatively safe here.

However, for independent travel I would not recommend this country - but only because of poorly developed tourism. Experienced travelers who want to see authentic, non-tourist Africa should come here. For people who want to look at lions and elephants from the window of a tourist bus, I would recommend the already mentioned Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa.

Today, many refer to Cape Verde as the "new Canary Islands".

Do you want new discoveries and unusual sensations? Then it's time for you to get to know Africa.

Everyone has heard about Africa - such a distant hot country. According to scientists, it was this territory that became the home of the first people on the planet. At present, Africa is a haven for the poorest sections of mankind. The standard of living there leaves much to be desired, people live below the poverty line. And in some parts of Africa, even the primitive system has been preserved. Many tribes continue to live in complete harmony with nature. On the this moment some regions of this amazing country have not been fully explored, and it is still unknown what is hidden there - beyond the ocean.

In order for the reader to get at least a little acquainted with such an unusual state, we decided to collect in one article the most interesting facts about Africa. The geography of this country is unique. The most amazing realities will be presented below.

  1. As is known from textbooks, the borders of states pass along the lines of rivers and mountains. But such a postulate does not apply to Africa. Here, the borders were drawn using ... an ordinary ruler. If you look at political map(photo above), you can verify this statement with your own eyes. Probably no other continent has such direct borders as here.
  2. The Sahara is considered to be one of the largest deserts in the world. However, a small detail was overlooked. Indeed, in Antarctica there are also cold deserts that are larger than the Sahara. It is worth making a clarification: the Sahara is the largest hot desert.
  3. Africa testify that almost all of these lands are colonial. What can not be said about Ethiopia. Perhaps that is why she now has a higher level of development.
  4. Hippos were considered the most common animals on the continent. To date, they can be found only in the southern part of the country. The fact is that today hippos are massively exterminated.
  5. Victoria Falls is the largest in the world.
  6. Everyone associates Madagascar with a part of the African continent, although it is an independent unit.
  7. Africa can literally be called a golden country. 50% of the world's gold production falls on this hot continent.
  8. Cairo is the capital of Egypt and also one of the most populous cities in the world.
  9. Another interesting fact about Africa is associated with the unusual town of Togo. Men need to be especially careful here, because the women of Togo are incredibly beautiful. But here lies the catch: if a man decides to make a compliment to a lady he likes, he must immediately marry her.
  10. From various educational programs it is known that a certain percentage of African tribes live primitive life. It is surprising that in the era of civilization, many of them do not even know how to make fire.
  11. Africa is considered to be a second world country. But, surprisingly, it was here that the very first and successful heart transplant operation was performed.
  12. The dunes in the Sahara are one of the most majestic and beautiful natural phenomena. As you know, they are taller than the Eiffel Tower.
  13. The temperature of the sand on a hot day in the African deserts can exceed 80 degrees.

The Congo River is one of the most full-flowing. In its length, it is second only to the Nile, which, in turn, became a kind of beginning of the birth of civilization. It was on these shores that many peoples began their lives.

There are a huge number of rivers on the African continent. But, unfortunately, many of them dry up during the dry season.

The largest river in Africa received two names at once: Blue and White Nile. The Blue Nile is a body of water with crystal clear water, in which the bottom is visible. White is distinguished by waters mixed with silt.

The locals don't like the Congo River

Rafting people love to come to Africa in order to go down at least once. It got its name not because of the color, as many might think. It was named after orange flamingos.

There is another interesting fact about Africa, based on reviews not only of tourists, but also of local residents. The population of the African continent does not like the Congo River. This is justified by the fact that the so-called tiger fish is found here. Representatives of this subspecies grow to a rather impressive size and pose a serious danger to fishermen.

There are a huge number of reservoirs on the continent that have not yet been explored by scientists. They were mapped recently, which is also quite surprising.

African rivers are famous for their abundance of waterfalls, which have a stepped character. This is a very picturesque phenomenon, especially if you see it live.

The Nile is the only river that runs through the driest desert, the Sahara.

Lake Tanganyika is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. It adjoins the Congo River.

Interesting facts about African animals deserve special attention. Everyone has heard about the representatives of the fauna of the Black Continent, and since childhood. Rhinos, lions, zebras... In the stories and poems of children's writers, animals from hot overseas countries are often mentioned. All these representatives of the fauna undoubtedly attract attention, but many are not even aware of their unusual habits.

The most agile and fast animals - the lion, the antelope and the cheetah - live in Africa. Representatives of these species are capable of speeds up to 110 km per hour. True, for too long they will not be able to hold it, so they run exclusively for short distances.

The elephant is the most massive inhabitant of the planet (on land). Such a large body saves him from predator attacks. Nobody dares to attack an elephant. On average, the weight of a giant is about 6 tons. The only being that threatens the life of such a powerful representative of the fauna is, of course, a person.

The tallest animal on the planet is the giraffe. Its height reaches 5 meters. Thanks to its long neck, it can eat the most delicious, but hard-to-reach twigs on plants.

And one more interesting fact about Africa: colorful cute zebras, despite their relationship with horses, have never been tamed by humans, and the absurd nature of the striped beauties is to blame. But by crossing, it was possible to bring out zebroids - a cross between a zebra and a horse or donkey. And a few more interesting facts about the color of these cuties. Each zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes, similar to human fingerprints. The cub recognizes its mother from the drawing. And the most interesting thing: zebra milk is pink!

Penguins live in Africa

Probably, many will be surprised by the fact that penguins live on this hot continent, because these representatives of the animal world are associated with Antarctica. It turns out that they feel quite good in "warm places". As for the continent we are considering, here they are located in Namibia and the Southern Republic. It is this coast that is washed by cold continental waters.

The most dangerous representatives of the fauna of the African continent

Hippos are among the most dangerous animals on the planet, despite the fact that they feed exclusively on grass. Clumsy in appearance, they vehemently protect their offspring, and if a person accidentally approaches, the animal will evaluate this as an attack.
Hippo skin secretes a certain enzyme that easily resists the scorching sun.

Hyenas are the most aggressive animals on the planet. In some cases, they are much more dangerous than a lion. After all, their jaws are much stronger and have a stranglehold.

The lion is the symbol of Africa. Graceful, but very lazy predator. He sleeps about 20 hours a day and wakes up exclusively to have a snack.

And finally, the most interesting fact about Africa: in terms of the danger provided, not a single animal, even the largest and most predatory, can be compared with a small tsetse fly. Thousands of people and animals die from its bite.

Unusual African peoples

Interesting facts about reflect the whole flavor of this distant continent. Some of them are presented below.

  1. Pygmies are a primitive African tribe. The level of their development is stuck somewhere in the Stone Age. It is very interesting to observe such a contrast.
  2. African women are very fond of gallant men who compliment them. But the latter must be pronounced with extreme caution, otherwise you will have to get married.
  3. Many have heard about women's harems, moreover, many men dreamed about them. But few people know that in certain parts of Africa, it is women who have their own male harems.
  4. The matabi tribe is very fond of kicking the ball. Their love for football is boundless, therefore, in the absence of sports equipment, they are happy to use ... a human skull, and this does not bother them at all.
