The main areas of work of a clinical psychologist in the department of nursing care by staff

Psychological assistance to OSU staff

The OSU staff is the object of professional activity of a clinical psychologist. The complexity of servicing cancer patients in the terminal stage is determined by a number of factors that traumatize the psyche of the staff themselves.

The most traumatic for the staff is the constant encounter with death, and psychological participation in it.

The specifics of the work of a clinical psychologist is complicated by the fact that the staff cannot distance themselves from patients. Dying situations are so dramatic that they turn on the entire staff almost automatically. Identification, identification with the sick and their experiences generates increased demands on the endurance potential, or, to be more precise, on the spirituality of everyone who goes to work for the dying patients. The clinical psychologist works with the staff towards properly informing patients and their relatives about the patient's condition.

Stressing factors affect the staff constantly. Rather than in other clinics, there is a syndrome of "burnout" here - a phenomenon of increased neuroticism, the development of psychosomatic diseases, such as peptic ulcer, diseases of the heart, and internal organs.

The staff in terms of changes in the psyche recorded increased fatigue, neurasthenic symptoms with irritability, mood swings, carcinophobic obsessions.

Death of young patients. The experience of this phenomenon by staff is often associated with the phenomenon of transference. The staff transfers death onto themselves, imagining their own demise from the same causes. In this regard, in addition to psychotherapy, it is required, first of all, to give rest to a person who is oversaturated with negative experiences, to give him the opportunity to switch to another situation, change the environment.

Psychotherapy for medical personnel is especially difficult and requires much more time and effort, since the clinical psychologist is faced with a situation where the doctor and the medical patient have almost the same experience and consciousness.

With regard to staff, it is advisable to apply the same methods as with patients, since we are talking, first of all, about the removal emotional stress. The principles of influence are the same, although the methods are modified in accordance with the difference in situations in which the oncological patient and our colleagues are.

It is expedient to include staff problems in the practice of morning conferences. Such discussions create staff training, but the time limit does not make it possible to completely stop the emotional reactions of everyone, but they help the staff feel unity and share the interests of everyone with everyone.

Not unsuccessful in relation to the staff are the elements of theater therapy. Changing the image of oneself allows you to get rid of stressful circumstances along with it.

An important factor in the "recovery" for the staff, as well as for patients, is art therapy. In addition to delivering aesthetic joy, true art is able to alleviate suffering, immersing in the world of higher, spiritual values: it makes you forget the bitterness of the moment, switch to another wave. This refers to the possibility of museums to help the OSU in conducting art therapy sessions on the basis of museum exhibits, in particular, paintings. And the most preferred here are pictures of nature, landscapes.

It is possible to use music therapy. It is necessary for both patients and staff. Negative experiences reduce a person's personal space, make it "cramped", this is a well-known psychological phenomenon. Music therapy enlarges the space, "expands" it. Preference should be given to classical, spiritual and folk music, as the noise effect of the so-called pop music, on the contrary, overloads the space and often causes irritation. Live music is especially effective. The combination of special music therapy focused on relaxation, although designed for a group, but as if addressed to everyone, gives the most positive effect.
