Important tips for novice tutors for successful work. How to start tutoring: tips from experienced people How to conduct classes for a Russian language tutor

One of the areas of work for yourself, which does not require significant costs, is tutoring - the provision of private educational services at home. Where to begin?

The services of a good tutor are highly valued, and with the introduction of a single state exam, additional training has become even more popular and in demand.

Therefore, tutoring can be a worthy alternative to working in educational institution, or just a good addition to the salary.

How to become a tutor?

This business option is perfect for school teachers and university professors specializing in a particular field. Since the main and sometimes the only investment in the future business will be your personal professional knowledge and experience in teaching.

So where to start?

  • First of all, in order for your initiative to be legal and free from problems with the tax office, you must register as an individual entrepreneur.
  • The next step is to acquire the necessary teaching aids and deciding on the venue for future classes with students:
  1. The first option is to work with students at the teacher's home - in this case, the teacher must prepare a comfortable room equipped with everything necessary for the educational process.
  2. Conducting classes on the territory of the student - in this case, the question arises of the cost of the tutor on the road.
  3. Tutoring in rented premises. This option is best if you plan to work with groups of students or even open a real center for the provision of private educational services.
  4. Distance learning via the Internet is gaining more and more popularity - the advantage of this work option is the ability to conduct classes with students from different parts of the country.
  • And last but not least, you need to take care of attracting future customers.

Looking for clients, or where do students come from?

The target audience of the tutor is, as a rule, schoolchildren. Those who have not fully mastered the program material, or vice versa, whose knowledge needs go beyond the curriculum.

There are many ways to notify interested parties about your services.

The first students can be found by posting ads in educational institutions, entrances of your neighborhood, the media.

In the future, your reputation as a professional teacher will do the trick.

Another effective option is the selection of students through tutoring agencies.

  • Recent university graduates and senior students, as usual, offer a cost in the range of 300-600 rubles. per hour of training.
  • Prices for teachers with experience from 5 to 7 years range up to 1000 rubles.
  • The price category from 1000 and above is represented by university teachers and highly experienced school teachers.

And earns as a techie

For two years after university, I worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature. Resigned due to a salary of 8500 rubles. I decided to work for myself and became a tutor.

Eva Ivanova

tutor in Russian language and literature

At first I worked through intermediary platforms and went home to the students. Over time, new students began to apply on the recommendation, and now it’s not me, but they come to my house for lessons. Now I earn 95,000 rubles a month. I'll tell you how I did it.

Intermediary platforms

First, I found four intermediary sites and registered on them. Such platforms work according to a tender scheme: the customer creates an application, the tutor leaves a response to it, and the administrator selects a suitable tutor.

Of the four, only one site, Your Tutor, immediately inspired me with confidence: when registering, I had to fill out a detailed form, indicate personal data, information about education and experience, and attach a photo.

My tutor profile appeared on the site only a few days later. Before that, the administrator called for a short interview and verified the authenticity of the data. Then I indicated the cost of one lesson and the areas to which I am ready to travel.

The platform offered tutors a certificate to increase customer confidence. The procedure was simple, and I immediately sent all the documents: scans of diplomas and certificates and my photo with a passport spread so that my name and photo could be seen. Three years ago, a tutor could get certified at will, now it is a mandatory requirement of the site. Without confirmation of identity and specialty, it will not be possible to receive an order.

The platform is free for customers. The tutor pays a percentage of the price of the order after the first lesson. Usually this is the full cost of 1-2 lessons.

I received my first student two weeks after registration. A month and a half later, I got a rating, which is made up of the feedback from my parents. The higher the rating, the more possibilities get customers.

The remaining three sites worked formally: the boards with orders were empty, they did not check the tutor at registration. For 3 years they have not brought a single order.

Work rules

To begin with, I decided to work on the road and work with schoolchildren in grades 6-9.

After a couple of months, I realized that I was spending a lot of time and money on the road. And I also live in Siberia - it's cold to stand at bus stops and travel by public transport in winter.

In addition, each house has its own rules and habits, I did not always fit into them. Some people have a lot of cats, and I'm allergic. I worked with one boy for 3 months in the kitchen, and all this time there was a chocolate wrapper and a juice cap under my chair. Same wrapper and lid. In another house, the father of the child came into the room during class and stood behind me in his shorts. Thank you for being in shorts.

I began to worry about my safety: I made a schedule table, entered class times, addresses, phone numbers and names of my parents there, and gave it to my relatives.

For the first lesson, I took a copy of my passport and diplomas with me. I showed my parents so they could be sure that I was me. I did not allow them to be photocopied or photographed: she explained that the intermediary company had all the data about me.

Rules for the work of a tutor on the road

Let me know if you're late.

Uncomfortable or dangerous - to leave.

Include the cost of travel in the cost of the lesson.

Set boundaries: do not participate in family squabbles, do not dine, do not accept anything as a gift.

A year later, I refused to work in other people's houses and began to take only those students who were ready to come to me.

When strangers began to come to my house, I became doubly worried about safety. I try to schedule the first lesson for a time when there is someone else at home besides me. In case of emergency, I keep a pepper spray in my desk.

In three years there was only one case that made me worry. In the wake of the news about the teacher who seduced three students, one eleventh grader thoughtfully asked what would happen if he told his parents that we were not studying Russian at all. She calmly answered that they would put me in jail for nothing, and he and my other students would be left on the eve of the exam without a cool teacher. Since then, I began to record all classes with him on a dictaphone.

Despite my fears, I try to be respectful and friendly to all students and remember that most of them are uncomfortable in a strange house. In winter, I offer tea and candy to frozen children, and in summer - water or juice.

Rules for working at home

Warn the student if there are animals in the house; ask if you have allergies.

Prepare light workplace, comfortable chair, spare pen. Remove anything that distracts.

Prepare for the fact that students will use the bathroom and toilet - do not dry underwear there, remove cosmetics, personal items and toilet water.

Remove valuables from prominent places.

Deal with socks.

Parents

Although I work with children, my clients are parents. They pay for the classes, so I try to give them enough attention.

During the work, I realized that it is necessary to tell in detail about the rules and procedures of work during the first call. But this is not enough. Best to print or mail e-mail memo.

I always invite my parents to the first lesson, but in three years none of them came.

I also specify in what way it is more convenient to communicate: calls, SMS, Telegram or other instant messengers. If the student did not come to class, I call or write to clarify whether everything is in order. Does not do homework, does not write essays - I warn my parents that this will affect the result of my work.

With high school students, I directly resolve issues of rescheduling classes or working off missed lessons. When you teach schoolchildren in grades 5-9, all changes in the schedule must be coordinated with parents.

Students

Most 11th graders themselves ask their parents to find a tutor for them, because they are worried about the upcoming exams. They are ready to work and know that the result depends on them. It is easy and pleasant to work with such students.

There are also lazy or capricious children. They are forced to study by their parents, so they perceive the tutor as a punishment: they rebel, ignore assignments, chat or answer calls during the lesson. I don't work with those.

If the student does not homework, skips classes without warning, I tell both him and his parents that I see no point in such lessons. Either the student begins to study, or I stop studying with him.

The most important thing about being a tutor is that I can choose who I work with.

Result

I am convinced that no tutor can guarantee a specific result on an exam. I tell parents about this directly during the first communication. The only guarantee that I give is that the level of knowledge of the student will be much higher than that with which he came to me.

If my parents demand that I promise 100 points on the exam, I politely refuse to cooperate. USE results depend on many factors: even the most prepared student in the exam can be confused, fall into a stupor or hysteria.

At the first lesson, I test the student, check the level of knowledge. Then I call my parents to tell them what results I can realistically achieve in the time left before the exam.

The average USE score that my students have received over the past 3 years: Russian language - 96 points; literature - 87.

Money

I work differently: the guys pay off right after the lesson. It happens that the student forgets about the payment. It’s uncomfortable for me to ask about money, so last year I came up with a little trick - I ask: “Masha, do I need to look for change?”

In order not to keep in mind that someone owes me money, I only accept transfers to the card from those with whom I work on Skype. I ask you to pay for the first remote lesson before it starts, the rest - after, but on the same day.

Basic rule - do not work on credit

There are parents who talk about a hard life and promise to pay in a week, a month. In such situations, I calmly say: “I understand you, but, unfortunately, I cannot work under such conditions. I hope you get through the difficulties quickly. I can save a place in the schedule until such and such a date. I will wait for Masha (Sasha, Pasha)."

In the first year, I worked at a rate of 600 rubles for 90 minutes. In a month I recruited 6 students. The income per month was about 29,000. Minus travel expenses and snacks.

The second year I worked at a rate of 750 rubles for 90 minutes. I had 10 students at the same time. The average income per month became 60,000. And there were no minuses on the road, because the students themselves came to me.

In the second year of cooperation, "Your tutor" gave me access to remote orders  -  I started working with students from Moscow and St. Petersburg via Skype. In these cities, the cost of a full-time lesson in Russian language and literature ranges from 1,500 to 5,000 rubles for 90 minutes. Those who want to save money work with tutors from the regions.

Every year I slightly increase the cost of an hour of classes. Now I work at a rate of 1000 rubles for 90 minutes. It is expensive for Siberia, but there are no fewer students. My average monthly income is  95,000 rubles.

1000 R

in 90 minutes - at this rate I am currently working

The word-of-mouth radio began to work -  students come directly, on the recommendations of other guys. For such orders, you do not need to pay a percentage to the site, it saves me about 10 thousand rubles.

There are practically no students in summer and in September. So I'm postponing my entire work year. For four empty months I leave at least 200 thousand - 50 thousand per month.

taxes

Intermediary companies do not pay taxes for a tutor - this is the responsibility of the tutors themselves. But according to the law, tutors have tax holidays - they may not pay taxes if they themselves provide services for personal needs. To do this, you need to submit a notice to the inspection. Then, on income for 2017 and 2018, you won’t have to pay anything to the budget at all and report.

So far I have not filed a notification, but I still manage to do it in order to comply with the law and not be indebted to the state. For two years, I will not pay anything to the budget, and then the release will either be extended, or a simplified procedure will be invented for self-employed tutors.

I am for legalization: even if they don’t come up with anything, after the tax holidays I will register as an individual entrepreneur and will pay 6% of income.

But there is competition here, and according to the laws of the market, experienced specialists force out newcomers. The question arises: can a beginner in this field compete with a guru? How to get started? Consider in the article.

A tutor without experience is not uncommon, but if there is a desire to work and give schoolchildren, applicants and students knowledge, then go ahead - open up new opportunities. Here are some tips that will help you turn from a “teapot” into the greatest master of your craft and earn money.

Let's not talk about mandatory teacher education and experience in the field of teaching children, in our case, this is an axiom. Consider how to start working as a tutor with no experience, and what is required for this.

We looked at how to start working as a tutor with no experience. In fact, there are no difficulties here: it requires patience, love for your work and a desire to cope with your duties perfectly well. With the right approach, very soon you will gain skills and experience and join the ranks of professional tutors who know how to earn and be in demand.

Many of us are able to teach other people something. The desire to transfer knowledge usually encourages people to become teachers and work in schools or universities. But you can go the other way. For example, to become a private teacher - tutor.

A tutor is a rather free person, he does not have supervisors in the form of, say, a head teacher or a vice-rector. However, in such a seemingly free and creative work Like tutoring, there are all sorts of nuances to consider and prepare for when deciding to teach someone at home.

If you decide to become a tutor, first of all you need to place an ad.

Take care of the absolute literacy of the text, even if you are going to teach pottery, and not even the Russian language.

Indicate the area - this way you will weed out obviously unsuitable customers. It is advisable to write your name in full, and not just "Lalya" or "Anya". Add a last name, and the level of trust of potential customers will increase. It is also advisable to attach your own photo, and not a picture of a schoolboy sweating from zeal.

Now let's figure out what you need to be prepared for when you undertake to help someone study science, even if this science is mathematics in primary school. Let me give you an example of teaching students.

  1. Immediately explain to the parents of the students that you are not a magician and cannot instantly turn a three-year student into an excellent student. Or maybe you won’t scrape up a B in a year, because much, but far from everything, depends on the teacher. This must be stated clearly so that there are no complaints later. There are people who sincerely believe that since they paid the money, they bought knowledge at school as well.
  2. Not all students will like you, but they must like you otherwise they will just run away. Therefore, you - the free sculptor of the child's mind - will have to work hard to find an approach to each of them without showing negative emotions. Of course, it is necessary to suggest to a child if he does not do his homework or is late, the main thing is not to overdo it. Do not humiliate students, be friendly, joke, and they will respond in kind.
  3. Always keep in touch with your parents. Even if, in your opinion, the training is going smoothly, there is progress, parents may have a different opinion. In addition, it is not known what the child tells about you at home. Call, communicate, share thoughts, praise or scold the child (however, express dissatisfaction very tactfully). In general, let your parents see or hear you. They need to know that their money is not going into a dumb void.
  4. Prepare diligently for classes, make a plan. You do not need to rely on improvisation and your own pedagogical talent. In every case, discipline and consistency are important. In, perhaps, especially. Do not worry that you may not know something, do not understand the question. Tell the student to clarify this point. Of course, do not forget to sort out the issue after.
  5. If a student behaves very badly - whines, does not complete tasks, looks at his watch every two minutes, snaps and so on - say goodbye to him. You don't have to torture yourself. As a result, you can break loose on the child, and then you will fly from your parents. Why spoil the image? Politely explain to parents that the child may not yet be ready for individual lessons.
  6. Schoolchildren, especially younger age physically unable to sit through an hour of classes, and even tete-a-tete with a teacher. If a child, who is generally responsible and quick-witted, begins to yawn and slow down at the end, reduce the time of the lesson. Be sure to tell your parents about this, they most likely will not mind. Accordingly, the payment will decrease, but for us, the main thing is the result, isn't it?
  7. If after the lesson the student forgot to pay - do not hesitate to remind him. Don't think about what he will bring next. Suddenly will not bring? You never know: forgot, lost, spent on nuts. And at home they may not know about it.
  8. Get ready for what Your class schedule will be constantly changing, you will have to adapt to the students. Moreover, pupils will be late or skip classes altogether, often without warning. It is advisable to remind about the lesson the night before by calling or texting.

In tutoring, as in any other job, responsibility, diligence and focus on a good result are important. But, above all, a teacher is a creative profession, sometimes devastating even a significant reserve of spiritual and physical strength.

Respect your work and the work of your students. And remember: teaching someone is sometimes harder than learning.

Do you have experience as a tutor? Share it in the comments.

Tutoring is often done by university and school teachers to earn extra money. Why for some this work becomes an episodic occupation, while others are constantly in demand and do not look for students. Secrets of a great tutor.

To become an excellent tutor, it is not enough to have a university graduate diploma. You must know your subject perfectly, be able to explain not only the theory, but also show how to implement it in practice, and it is better if the examples are from real life. Also, the signs of professionalism are:

Knowledge of the method of teaching the subject in a certain sequence and the ability to explain why the study is taking place in this sequence. Use of quality textbooks. The tutor should have his own set of teaching aids, which he considers the best - well-written, structured and clearly demonstrating theoretical calculations. You must not only choose a textbook for teaching, but also be able to explain to the student why you chose this textbook.

Providing additional materials. Agree, you can read the textbook yourself, there is no need to hire a tutor for this, so a good teacher always provides students additional materials, uses high technologies in teaching and makes educational process more interactive.

Application of a fair system of knowledge assessment, readiness to justify this or that assessment. The work of the tutor is also evaluated, but already by the level of knowledge of his student. You can find out the effectiveness of your program by comparing the student's initial level with the current one or by asking parents, colleagues, and the student about the progress.

Constant professional growth of the tutor. Each of us has something to learn, so a successful tutor regularly attends advanced training courses, trainings and seminars on his subject and teaching methods. It will also be useful to monitor the events taking place in the world related to your field of knowledge.

Personal qualities

Not every graduate pedagogical university able to become a good tutor. To do this, you need to have a set of qualities that allow you to build the educational process most effectively. The most important quality is the ability to find mutual language with the student, to establish emotional contact with him. Without understanding the reaction to the training material, you will not be able to make adjustments to the program if necessary. Contact with the student allows you to increase his interest in the subject being studied, and hence the effectiveness of training.

Punctuality and consistency are also important for a tutor. The beginning and end of classes should always be at the same time, checking the work done - just in time, and the materials for the lesson are always ready in advance. Well, if the tutor thinks systematically, this will allow him to form the structure of classes and in the process of learning not to jump from one to another, but to go from simple to complex, always remembering the ultimate goal.

How to become a tutor

If you have a desire to become a mentor, to teach someone what you know yourself, then you are ready to become a tutor. To be successful, you need to follow a series of steps:

  1. Choose your specialization. Math analysis and solution differential equations- fundamentally different directions, although one is part of the other.
  2. Treat everyone individually. Do not forget that before you is not a stream of students, but one specific person, to adapt to which is now your job.
  3. Always conduct an assessment at the beginning of the course. This way you can find out if the student is ready for your program, or if it needs to be slightly expanded on the foundations that the student does not know. Make the learning process interactive - encourage the student to ask questions and express their opinion, even if it does not coincide with yours or generally accepted.
  4. At the end of the course, ask the student to evaluate the program and your effectiveness as a teacher. This will allow you to improve your skills, and at the same time you will receive recommendations for working with the following clients.

The demand for the services of tutors is great, and in order to become not one of many, but the best in your field, treat it responsibly. Increase the level of knowledge of students, students and adults, improve yourself and your educational program then thanks to you modern society will get a little better.
