Throughout the history of Russia, many units have been engaged in anti-terrorist activities and the release of hostages. One of them was the 1st Red Banner Special Forces Detachment, which is better known as the Vityaz special forces.

When was the division formed?

The holding of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow required the government and law enforcement agencies to take special precautions. Work in this direction began to be carried out since 1978. As a result, in a separate motorized rifle division operational purpose named after F. Dzerzhinsky, a training sports company of the URSN was created. Members of the personnel of this unit were supposed to ensure the safety of the highest ranks of the country and guests during the Olympic Games. The special unit included officers, warrant officers, sergeants and conscripts. By order of the Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR, the selection criteria were: a high level of discipline and physical fitness, as well as the moral and psychological qualities necessary for work. In 1989, this training company became the basis for the creation of a special forces battalion, whose employees were involved in the most difficult combat missions. In May 1991, by order of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs, the special forces of the Vityaz VV were formed from the employees of this training battalion.

Functions

Employees who were part of the Vityaz special forces were engaged in the following tasks:

  • Stopped terrorist attacks.
  • The hostages were released.
  • Engaged in the protection of important state facilities, special cargo, buildings state power and communication facilities.

Subdivision symbol

After the Vityaz special forces were formed, the question arose of how to distinguish the employees of this unit from others. For this purpose, berets were used by various special forces. The berets of each unit differed from each other in their color. The servicemen who made up the Vityaz special forces wore maroon berets. This color is a symbol of the blood shed by internal service officers during their combat missions. According to many veterans who went through the Chechen campaign, only the best deserve the right to wear maroon berets.

Only well-trained military personnel could achieve a high result. Not a single "krapovik" fell into the hands of Chechen fighters for the entire period of the war, while on the territory of the rebellious republic, the special forces "Vityaz" performed their tasks. The photo below represents the external design of the beret.

Start of testing

It was possible to determine who is worthy of wearing this headdress by examining military personnel. From the very beginning of the introduction in the division of the maroon beret, such exams were conducted behind the scenes. This is explained by the fact that the idea of "chosenness" was not welcomed by the high military command. Only in 1993, the commander of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, General Kulikov, approved the regulation "On the qualification tests of military personnel for the right to wear a maroon beret."

How is the special forces "Vityaz" examined?

What are they teaching?

In the center "Vityaz" instructors teach the following disciplines: legal training, tactical-special, special fire, physical, medical, psychological and route training. The latter consists in the development of special driving techniques by students. In addition, instructors are trained to use special equipment.

The special purpose detachment "Vityaz" is subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation. This anti-terrorist unit went down in history as one of the best.

The decision of the USSR government to create special forces within the KGB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs was caused by the need to ensure security during the Olympics-80. In structure internal troops(VV) The USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs decided to create a special unit to counter terrorist and sabotage activities. The formation of a new detachment, which in 1991 was named "Vityaz", began on December 29, 1977.

The unit was created on the basis of the 2nd Regiment of the Separate Motorized Rifle Division for Operational Purposes (OMSDON) named after. F.E. Dzerzhinsky, which was stationed in the east of the Moscow region. The detachment was replenished by the most trained officers, ensigns and soldiers who were serving at the time.

The special unit was finally formed on March 9, 1978. On this day, the head of the internal troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USSR, Ivan Yakovlev, signed an order "On the formation of a special-purpose training company OMSDON."

After successfully providing security at the 1980 Olympic Games, the special forces near Moscow were noted for hostage rescue operations: in 1981 in the Udmurt region and in 1986 in Ufa. The appearance of the first owners of maroon berets among the "knights" in 1988 testifies to the growth of the professionalism of the fighters. Maroon beret - highest form distinguishes non-army special forces in the USSR and the Russian Federation, its owners pass the most severe exam in combat and physical training.

In the late 1980s, special forces participated in the elimination of riots in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Moldova, Abkhazia, and Nagorno-Karabakh. In the 1990s, special forces soldiers performed tasks in most of the hot spots in the North Caucasus: Chechnya, Dagestan, North Ossetia, and also helped restore order in Moscow in October 1993 during the defense of the Ostankino television center.

During this turbulent period for the country, there were important events in the life of the Moscow region special forces. In December 1989, a special-purpose battalion was formed on the basis of the OMSDON special-purpose training company. On May 5, 1991, he was reorganized into the 6th special forces detachment "Vityaz".

In January 1999, before the start of the second Chechen campaign, the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Vladimir Rushailo disbanded the 6th special forces detachment. "Vityaz" was reorganized into the 118th, and then into the 1st Red Banner Regiment. In December 2001, after the end of active hostilities in the Chechen Republic, the 1st Red Banner Regiment became the 1st Red Banner Vityaz detachment.

In June 2008, the 604th Special Purpose Center (TSSN) - military unit 3179 - was created on the basis of the Vityaz and the Rus special forces detachment, which was located near Balashikha near Moscow.

In the 2000s, the Vityaz continued to serve in the North Caucasus, interacting with units of the Ministry of Defense and special forces of the GRU and the FSB (Alfa and Vympel). Also, the special forces participated in the operation to free the hostages at the Theater Center on Dubrovka in 2002 and at the school in Beslan in 2004. Eight Vityaz fighters were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.

Since 2008, the Vityaz has been solving combat missions mainly in Dagestan. From 2009 to 2013, four people were killed in battles with gangs on the territory of the North Caucasian republic.

special training

Over the 40 years of its existence, Vityaz has accumulated a wealth of experience. Candidates for the special forces underwent a rigorous selection, during which their physical form, ability to use different types firearms, hand-to-hand combat skills and the ability to endure psychological stress.

AT Soviet years"Vityaz" was equipped mainly with motorized rifles. In the late 1990s, the detachment joined Airborne troops, who formed the backbone of the so-called First Officers' Group - one of the most combat-ready units of the second Chechen campaign.

In 2016, in connection with the disbandment of the internal troops, the Vityaz became part of the Russian Guard. About half of its fighters are owners of maroon berets.

The 604th Special Purpose Center is one of the best training grounds for special forces in Russia. In July 2017, CSN hosted international triathlon competitions, including shooting, overcoming a special obstacle course and high-altitude training.

It is not the first year that the Vityaz has been conducting the “Cooperation” exercises with units of the People’s Armed Police (CAP) of China. In the first half of December 2017, the maneuvers took place in China. The fighters practiced the elimination of bandit formations in desert and mountainous areas.

Currently, groups of divers, drone operators, motorized paraglider pilots, and cynologists operate in the Vityaz structure. The diving team of the TsSN is the pride of the Russian Guard. Divers are capable of clearing underwater objects, guarding bridge supports and combating underwater saboteurs.

The Vityaz fighters undergo mandatory special tactical and mountain training. Since 2016, special forces near Moscow have been mastering the technique of landing from ultra-low altitudes (200 m), as well as from a height of 3000 m. Information about the number of the 604th TsSN has not been disclosed.

It is known from open sources that the Vityaz is armed with the AK-74M, the Yarygin pistol (Grach), the silent Val machine gun, the VSK-94 rifle sniper system, the Vintorez silent sniper rifle, the OTs- 14 Thunderstorm.

At the risk of life

In an interview with RT, Alexei Golubev, a participant in counter-terrorist operations in the North Caucasus, noted that the Vityaz meets all the requirements that apply to a modern special unit. The ability to solve an extremely wide range of tasks testifies to the high skill of the fighters of the Russian Guard.

"Vityaz" rightfully earned the glory of an effective special forces. Special forces do not stand still, mastering new types of weapons and combat tactics. It is very important for them to constantly improve. After all, our opponents are inventing new methods of sabotage and provocation in order to destabilize the situation,” Golubev stated.

According to the expert, in the preparation of special forces, special attention is paid to the moral and psychological component, since the work of a fighter is associated with a constant risk to life. The danger of dying and letting his comrades down stimulates the commando to improve his skills and strong-willed qualities.

“Spetsnaz is distinguished, first of all, out of the box thinking, will and self-discipline. For example, the commander of a special squad must quickly adapt to the changing situation on the battlefield. He is always open to new experience, realizing that only the highest professionalism will allow him to complete the task, and most importantly, save the lives of the fighters, ”Golubev emphasized.

The detachment was originally created as an anti-terrorist unit. "Vityaz" regularly conducts counter-terrorism operations, patrols in Chechnya and on the border of the Caucasus. In addition, the fighters are trained to prevent riots in prisons. More than 70 fighters of the detachment were awarded the title of Hero Soviet Union and the Russian Federation for courage and heroism.

Story
In the 1970s, in connection with the increasing cases of terrorism in European countries, it became necessary to have military units designed to carry out particularly responsible tasks in the fight against terror. The USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs decided to create a special unit of constant combat readiness as part of the operational division of the internal troops, the military personnel of which would have special training to counter terror and other illegal actions.
At the beginning of 1978, work began on the formation and preparation of a special purpose training company (URSN). The recruitment of conscripts for this unit was carried out from among the best ODON athletes exclusively on a voluntary basis.
The first operation assigned to the company was to ensure security at the Olympic Games in Moscow.
In 1991, the Vityaz special forces detachment was created. During the formation, the experience gained in the URSN and similar divisions of Russia was used.
The idea to take an exam for the right to wear a crane beret was also born in Vityaz. The first commander of the detachment, Sergei Ivanovich Lysyuk, together with other officers, developed criteria for passing exams in special, physical and tactical training, which are still held in all units of the special forces of the internal troops.
