Dmitry Tarasov (Chaos Control) shared information about the release of the Windows version of the program in his blog.

As promised earlier, on November 23 we released our first full-fledged product for the desktop version of Windows - . Now that the first steps have been taken, and the inevitable launch problems have been eliminated, it's time to tell in more detail how we came to the release of the Windows version of the application, what came of it and what will happen next.

Windows 7 support in 2016? Seriously?

A funny thing happened to me a week ago. In Moscow, there is a Fund for the Development of Internet Initiatives, which invests in various projects at an early stage. Periodically, they hold open meetings with mentors (these are experts who come to the fund to give advice to startups), where you can talk about your project and get feedback. This idea was implemented in the form of express consultations with 5-6 experts in turn.

I decided to go to this event to unwind (we are still far from the stage from which it is interesting to go to the IIDF) and listen to what respected people think about the concept of Chaos control. So everything was fine until the very last session, where I met with an expert from Microsoft. When he learned that we had just released an application that supports Windows 7 (I prudently kept silent about the fact that we also support XP), he looked at me with bewilderment as if I were crazy. The subsequent dialogue looked something like this:

He: Yes, we already have 50 million users on Windows 10, and we don't even sell Windows 7 anymore.
I: But this does not negate the fact that most of our users do not want to switch to Windows 10 and continue to use Windows 7.
He: What the hell? You don't follow the market at all!
I: As well as enterprise users who do not trust Windows 10 and continue to use Windows 7 or Windows XP in general.

At this point, I just died for him as a person. In the eyes it was directly read: “What kind of idiot do you have to be to release an application for Windows 7 in 2016?”.

To explain: yes, Windows 10 is growing fast, which is great. Especially considering that the new Chaos Control generally supports all versions of Windows, including Windows 10. But in numbers, at the moment in Russia, the number of users with Windows 10 is 2 times less than the number of users with Windows XP (!). And 10 times less than the number of users on Windows 7:

By the way, you know that we already had an application in the Windows Store that works on Windows 8 and Windows 10. So, we only earned as much from pre-orders of the new PC version as we earn in the Windows Store in 4 months. So much for "not following the market".

Harsh figures objectively reflecting the true state of affairs were also confirmed by our users. The request for a full desktop client for Windows was perhaps the most popular request since the early months of Chaos Control. Even multiple contexts and priorities have not been asked of us as often as to release a client under the seven. So, reasoning that we needed a “real” desktop client for Chaos Control to work as a planning tool, we finally released it.

Rakes and problems at the start

It wasn't without problems, of course. First, we greatly underestimated the time and complexity of developing a desktop client. The fact is that although we had extensive experience in creating mobile applications, this was our first project for a radically different platform. And we are also lucky that we have a very cool developer. The process of creating a Windows desktop application differs from creating an Android application in everything from the development process to the process of publishing an application. Therefore, we discovered a lot of new things for ourselves, made childish mistakes and shamelessly delayed the development time. I can safely call it the most valuable experience gained over the past year.

The second major problem was platform fragmentation. Now, talking about how difficult it is to develop applications for Android, because there are a lot of devices, makes me laugh. Imagine: Windows is installed on hundreds of millions of PCs and on millions of different hardware configurations and the degree of neglect of the system. Even the same assembly of Windows, installed on the same hardware, after a year and after five years of operation are radically different systems. Therefore, immediately after the launch, we picked up problems with old hardware and, in particular, with Windows XP. There were also problems with the new screens with high resolution. At the moment they are already resolved, but for example, what my desktop looked like most of the time the last few months:

A great help in this regard was the beta tests of the application, which we conducted together with our most active users. Having tried it on Windows, we will extend this practice to mobile platforms - this is an extremely positive experience in all respects.

In addition, in the case of software for versions of Windows prior to Windows 8, the entire logistics of software distribution falls on the shoulders of the developer. The Windows Store does not accept such software, so we had to implement our own license verification mechanisms, as well as use our own billing. By the way, be prepared to spend an extra $1,000 on app certification and registration code verification system integration if you're building your own Windows app. By the way, this also has its advantages. In particular, our billing allows you to receive each payment for each sold application license in real time to your PayPal account (in the case of foreign buyers), and not incomprehensibly when and in incomprehensible amount, as is the case with the Windows Store.

Ultimately, we did a lot of work that laid the foundation for further scaling and development of our desktop clients (a Mac client is also on the way), as well as to improve the financial performance of the project as a whole. For our users, this means a more intensive development of clients on all key platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Web).

What happened in the end

The result is a client that, in its first version, repeats the functionality of mobile clients, but, due to the desktop form factor, is more convenient in planning and processing large amounts of data. I'll just leave here a few screenshots that illustrate themselves:

We have already collected the first feedback from users and are extremely pleased with what we have achieved. Especially now, when the first problems have already been fixed, and the strategy for further development is clear. I want to sincerely thank all our users who pre-ordered and gave feedback on the first versions of the product - it helped us a lot. Let me remind you that you can download the trial version and / or buy the application.

Strategy for further development

By the end of the year, we plan to prepare and release a similar client for Mac OS into beta test (the start of sales is scheduled for January 21). After that, clients will be updated more or less in parallel. From the nearest plans - integration with the calendar and, probably, deep integration with MS Office (in particular, with Outlook). In addition, we have begun work on redesigning and developing the next major update of the iOS version, as well as incremental improvements to the Android version.

For all Chaos Control applications in general, our main priority right now is adding the ability to attach files to projects and tasks, as well as adding delegation and collaboration capabilities. This does not cancel other plans, but our main priority for the next year is the release of a product that allows you to use our tool not only for personal planning, but also for organizing work in teams.

For a long time I tried to organize efficient and convenient management of my time (tasks). In theory, I am prepared, it remains to find a way to implement theoretical skills. And if with family budget I figured it out easily (I drew it myself and built an algorithm), then there were difficulties. I tried to develop special spreadsheets in Excel, but they were only available on the computer, and this made it difficult to work with plans and tasks - ideally, I needed the ability to work with them anywhere and at any time. Yes, to some extent I made it easier to complete tasks at work, but nothing more. This question haunted me for a long time.

I recently got myself a smartphone. I have long had hopes that the advances of modern technology will give impetus to my achievements in managing my own time, and, having become the owner of a smartphone, the first thing I rushed to look for applications for time management.

After a quick look at the built-in scheduler and several free programs available, I came across the application "Chaos Control". This program seemed to me, although not ideal, but the most suitable for me from what I tried - it is possible to implement individual elements of the system in it, and it is also, as stated, compatible with the concept GTD - Getting Thihgs Done(if you type the name into a search engine, then this abbreviation is often found in the search results along with the program).

First of all, I was looking for ways to organize tasks into projects. In "Chaos Control" this is successfully implemented: you can create projects for grouping tasks, and at two levels: folder (group of projects) - project - task. For random tasks that have not yet been finalized, there is a "Place of Chaos" - here you can keep sketches of future tasks, tasks with an as yet indefinite deadline, as well as just notes.

When creating a task, the following parameters are specified:
- the project to which it refers (or "Place of Chaos");
- the context in which it is most convenient to perform it (template contexts - "At home", "In the office", "In the morning", "In free 15 minutes"...);
- start and end time;
- notes;
- reminder time.

What did I like about "CHAOS Control"?

1. All planning is built within the framework of projects, that is, tasks do not appear randomly, but systematically, and arise not as the need arises to solve them, but as the main goal is understood.

2. It’s convenient enough to set tasks (I didn’t think before that it could be so easy in a mobile application). Creating a task, transferring it to another day, marking it as completed, transferring from the "Place of Chaos" is done very quickly and pleasantly, the program is obscenely simple. It seems that a lot of work has been done to eliminate unnecessary steps - this is where the program wins over individual competitors. This is extremely important: if an application designed to save time requires you to perform unnecessary actions, it will look illogical.

3. You can set several parameters by which to apply the filter for control in the future: day, project, context.

4. There is a Place of Chaos, where you can throw unformed thought-tasks, and then scatter them across projects. This opportunity can be used to outline plans for the future, which can be periodically reviewed and transferred to the appropriate projects as they are developed. Place of Chaos can be used in a variety of ways, as far as fantasy.

5. When forming a task, you can set the period of its relevance: both the beginning of the execution and the end. (this is not, for example, in the recently reviewed, for which he is criticized). Very convenient - allows you to start completing the task before the deadline day.

What inconveniences did I note in "CHAOS-control"?

1. It is not possible to copy tasks (in free version). True, you can postpone the recurring task to the next day each time, but then when planning the next days in advance, you can miss them, and in current day there will be no mark of completion. In the paid version, this issue is resolved.

2. There is no way to specify the priority for setting tasks in Stephen Covey's popular "4 squares" format (and, accordingly, a filter by priority tasks). You can, of course, use the context to set the priority, but then it will no longer be possible to use the context itself for the originally intended purposes.

3. There is no way to set a color for tasks and filter by it (and then people themselves would think what to do with it: either set a priority, or a contact person for completing a task, or a field of activity). It would be just awesome.

4. Additional parameters in tasks (koiros) that the user could configure on their own would come in handy: koiros-place, koiros-time, koiros-contact person. This would give the application a multidimensionality. This is very well implemented in Todoist.

5. For synchronization (for now) you need to buy separate versions for PC and phone, and this is additional money. At the same time, I don’t really understand the meaning of synchronization: a smartphone, in my opinion, is needed to replace a computer and increase mobility, that is, a mobile application should be convenient for offline use. But, on the other hand, the paid version stores data in the cloud, and if you lose your phone, the data will be saved - this can be important.

6.If the task was set with a duration of several days, then when it is marked as completed, it will be recorded as completed on each of the days. This makes it difficult to correctly evaluate the result of the past day .. which

7. The program has a small "depth", when moving with the "back" button, in many cases you can simply accidentally leave the program (from the Plan of the Day, the Place of Chaos, the list of projects). It would be nice if there was some last level before the "departure" - for example, the main page.

In my opinion, just a few small things would have greatly improved this application. A set of icons would come in very handy: simple sketchy images of a house, office, family, car, road, holiday, resort, gift box, etc. If such a set of standard icons, available for attaching to projects, would be nested, and it would roam through all lists along with the tasks of this project, this would increase the visibility and "comfort" of the application. Just like highlighting tasks with color. After all, for sure, many in this program, with all its functionality, will lack beauty, grace, "glossy" - all that is why a person chooses a watch for 20,000 rubles, and not for 2,000, Iphone, and not a simple "dialer ". I see the main reserves for improving the program here. Perhaps some of these features could be included in the paid version. Additional parameters - "koiros" would also be very useful - especially for those who communicate with a large circle of people whose tasks are scattered across different locations. Well, it is almost critical for the further development of the application that the ability to set priorities for tasks appears.

By the way... found application development plan, improvements are planned there that will fully satisfy my needs. Well, let's wait.

Summary.The application "Chaos Control" is quite simple and convenient, it has necessary minimum functionality. You can understand the program in an hour, and in a few days the speed of working with it will approach the speed of thought :-). This program is quite capable of helping to organize a day, a week or a longer period, set development goals and priorities and track their achievement, as well as work with unsystematic information that requires some kind of action in the future. The lack of high-tech features such as integration with other programs, dialing a phone number directly from a task is compensated by speed and simplicity. I choose this application as my main scheduler, but I will continue to study similar programs.
