The name "English Society for Illumination of the City of Moscow with Fluid Gas" explains in detail what this organization was engaged in. In the 19th century, gas began to be used to light the streets of London, Berlin, Paris, and by 1861 Moscow became interested in the use of modern technologies, providing land for the construction of a gas plant to the aforementioned Society with a long name. The territory was allocated in Susalny Lane on the banks of the Chernogryazka River.

The construction of the Moscow Gas Plant began in 1865, the first buildings were erected for the production of gas from coke. Two buildings, intended for offices and a hostel for workers, faced the alley with facades. They were designed by Fyodor Dmitriev. And gasholders - gas storage tanks that can withstand heavy operating loads and caustic environments - were built according to the project of architect Rudolf Bernhard, professor of the St. Petersburg Institute of Civil Engineers. The diameter of these giant cylinders is 40 meters.

By 1882, 9,000 gas lamps illuminated Moscow streets, but the townspeople were in no hurry to use gas in their homes. It was not a cheap pleasure, besides, kerosene dealers spread rumors about the dangers of gas for health. Bouquet and Goldsmith's company was counting on completely different dividends, and after the expiration of the concession, the enterprise was transferred to the ownership of the city.

In 1911, the Moscow City Duma allocated 4 million rubles for the reconstruction and development of the gas plant. With this money, in order to increase the capacity of the plant, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank of a smaller diameter were erected according to the projects of architects Maxim Geppener, Nikolai Milyukov, Mikhail Stepanov and Alexander Roop. The ceilings were designed by engineer Vladimir Shukhov. The new buildings housed the hardware and retort departments, an ammonia plant, facilities for gas purification from impurities, a meter plant, and a water gas plant. During this reconstruction, half of the old large factory building was demolished.

In Soviet times, the Moscow Gas Plant grew with two more buildings and until the middle of the 20th century provided gas supply to Moscow, but after the commissioning of the Saratov-Moscow pipeline in 1946, the need to keep hazardous production in the center of the capital disappeared and the company switched to the production of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other technology. In the 1990s, the plant began to produce gas shut-off valves, and the enterprise itself was renamed the ARMA plant.

In 2002, the Arma plant ceased to exist and the question arose of demolishing most of the ensemble due to the "lack of historical and architectural value and the unsatisfactory technical condition of the supporting structures." After discussions with the participation of all interested parties, it was decided to keep the facades of the buildings with a complete restructuring of the interior to meet modern needs. Currently, factory space is leased to tenants - restaurants and cafes, art galleries, clubs, design studios, shops and showrooms.

The shortest way to "Arma" lies through the underground passage from the Kursk railway station and the metro station "Kurskaya". On weekdays, it is crowded here, employees of nearby institutes and students go from the trains.

Nizhny Susalny Lane was named after a factory that once produced gold leaf. Only a couple of houses on the even side of the lane remind of old Moscow here.

All Moscow enterprises that became objects of redevelopment were built before the Great Patriotic War, and volunteers left each for the front. In memory of those who did not return, the factory workers arranged memorials with lists of those who died in the war. The "Immortal Regiment" of the Moscow Gas Plant is carved on granite in one of the main squares of "Arma". But there are other examples as well. After the closure of production, an unexpected question arose, who will now take care of the monuments? It's sad, but some were abandoned (ZIL, "Esters") or completely dismantled (at Yamskoye Pole).

Three checkpoints have been equipped to enter Arma, the front one is located in Nizhny Susalny Lane, the other two are not so comfortable yet.

You can walk around the territory for a long time, looking at the old red bricks in combination with modern glazing of buildings. But there are practically no small signs of a bygone era, not even a single sewer manhole from pre-revolutionary times or the first years of Soviet power has been found.

“More about galleries, then Arma is about nightclubs,” wrote The Village at the dawn of its history in 2010. And Denis Simachev, who located his studio in the backyard of the Kursk railway station, inviting friends here, promised that everything "will be like in London." There is no longer a famous designer, nor many other signs of the 2000s at Armagh, and the space has been actively updated for several years now. In continuation of the new life of creative clusters in Moscow, The Village learned about what the new "Arma" will be like.

Story

The construction of the Moscow gas plant began in 1865 - four years before that, several merchants suggested that the governor general organize gas lighting in the city. The tender for the concession was won by the English Society for Lighting the City of Moscow with Fluid Gas. It bought out part of the gardens on the banks of the Chernogryazka River ( now enclosed in a collector right tributary of the Yauza. - Approx. ed.) near Nizhny Susalny Lane. The first factory buildings were two two-story buildings for offices and workers' accommodation, designed by architect Fyodor Dmitriev. Brick gas holders were designed by the architect Rudolf Bernhard. The gas plant itself was built from several workshops between the tanks and the administrative building. Already in 1868, 3,000 gas lamps were lit in Moscow. In 1905, the plant passed to the city, and a few years later, to increase its capacity, its reconstruction began. According to the project of engineer and architect Vladimir Shukhov, six new factory buildings and an additional gas tank were erected on the territory.

In the Soviet years, the plant was an enterprise of national importance: until the middle of the 20th century, it provided gas to all of Moscow. However, after the commissioning of the Saratov-Moscow gas pipeline in 1946, the need for fuel production disappeared. Production was reoriented to the manufacture of gas equipment: stoves, meters and other equipment. According to the General Plan of Moscow in 1971, the plant was included in the number of enterprises being removed from the city.
In the 1990s, they began to produce gas shut-off valves there, and the enterprise itself was finally renamed Arma. Production was stopped in 2002, and tenants began to occupy the empty workshops.

"Arma" - the territory of creativity

After privatization in the 1990s, the plant at various times belonged to the Slavyansky and Vizavi banks. Today the owner of the territory is the Big City company. The first tenants at Arma were designers Denis Simachev and Katya Gomiashvili, Alexander Yakut's gallery and the Gazgolder club. Thanks to them, "Arma" has become one of the centers of cultural life in Moscow. In 2008, the Zhivi media group moved to Arma, and the Arma 17 club was opened. It was the low rental rates in the unrenovated buildings that attracted a large number of creative projects to Arma.

In the mid-2000s, it was planned to carry out a large-scale reconstruction on the territory of the former plant. The project called for the demolition of most of the buildings, but the concept attracted public attention and work was abandoned. The press service of "Arma", however, notes that in the past there were many plans for the development of the territory and not all of them were related to the owners.

"Arma" - business park

The Big City company did not abandon plans for a major overhaul, and work began in 2011. Four gas tanks were repaired first, then the building of the Soviet period next door. After the repair, prices also increased: as they say at Arma, now the technical equipment of the facilities corresponds to class A. At the same time, the early tenants, including the Zhivi media group, also moved out. Last year, the Arma 17 nightclub announced the move.

Now the repair of the former auxiliary shops of the gas plant, erected at the beginning of the 20th century, is being completed. A pedestrian zone, spacious parking lots and new navigation will appear on the territory of the former plant. The developer will improve the surrounding area. The purpose of the changes is to create a space that is attractive to the general public and retail and office tenants. The renovated territory of the plant is now called a business park. Among the new tenants are two fitness clubs, beauty salons, restaurants, coffee shops, dry cleaners, travel agencies, and a medical center.

The reconstruction of buildings is carried out by the architectural bureau "Sergey Kiselev and Partners" - the authors of the business complex "Mirax Plaza", the office of "Yandex" and a spectacular house on the corner of Ostozhenka and 1st Zachatievsky Lane. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.
