Each of us in life regularly faces the need to listen, support and understand another person. For some, this is easy and simple, but for someone it is an extremely difficult task.

The ability of a person to empathize, feel another and experience similar emotions in psychology is called empathy.

The nature of empathic perception

A high level of empathy in a person is manifested in her ability to empathize in a certain way, which distinguishes her from sympathy:

  • At the moment of empathy, an empathic person “forgets” about himself, his interests and experiences - he is completely immersed in the problems of another;
  • Clearly understands and names for himself the emotions and experiences of another person;
  • Knows how to carefully and tactfully convey his support and express it in a way that is comfortable and close to the other.

Empathic empathy is more than just empathy.

If such a person sees that the other is scared, it hurts him, or, conversely, feels joy - he feels fear and pain, or rejoices with him. These feelings are perceived as their own. Empathy is also interesting in that it is able to manifest itself not only in relation to other people or animals - its peculiarity is in the manifestation of feelings and emotions of the same strength to the heroes of literary works, theater and cinema.

Methods of determination

Tests that are used to diagnose social empathy are available to anyone who is interested in the issue of developing their own level of empathy. The methodology for determining the degree of empathy is almost identical everywhere - it is a list of questions with several answers, from which you need to choose one that is closest to you. Tests can be used in aggregate - by answering several, you will be able to evaluate yourself as much as possible in terms of the ability to sympathize and empathize with people.

  1. I.M. test Yusupov

Test of a psychologist from Kazan I.M. Yusupov - the most common express method for determining empathy. The essence of the method is in the subjective evaluation of several statements. At first glance, they seem far from the topic of empathy and emotional involvement in the problems of others, however, the scientist created the test in such a way in order to minimize the number of socially expected answers. They cannot be good or bad - the most important thing is to answer honestly and be the first thing that comes to mind. The results are presented in a table, where each answer option is assigned a score.

  1. V.V. test Boyko

At first glance, this test seems simpler - the methodology consists of an identical number of questions, and there are fewer answer options. The method of answers consists in a positive and negative assessment - "yes" or "no". However, in the process of creating the methodology, V.V. Boyko was guided by the allocation of several channels of empathy:

  • Rational. The conscious focus of attention, thinking on another being, in the absence of logic and motivation of interest, attracts the very fact of the existence of the subject and its features.
  • Emotional. It is characterized by immersion in the human energy field when an emotional resonance occurs.
  • Intuitive. The ability to intuitively anticipate the behavior of a partner, to act without having enough information about him, relying on the subconscious.

According to V.V. Boyko, it is the methodology for assessing the level of development of these three parameters of empathy that together can give an objective answer.

Why do you need to determine your level of empathy?

Tests by I.M. Yusupov and V.V. Boyko are the most common and effective methods today due to their simplicity and accessibility, including online. They give an answer to the question, to what extent are we able to feel the experiences of another person? If the tests do not give the result that should be considered acceptable, then it is in our hands to change it.

The method for diagnosing the level of empathic abilities of V. V. Boyko (Boiko's empathy test) is designed to assess the ability to empathize and understand the thoughts and feelings of another.

Empathy involves a meaningful representation of the inner world of a communication partner. Empathy arises faster and easier in case of similarity of behavioral and emotional reactions.

As special forms of empathy, there are:

Empathy - the experience by the interlocutor of the same feelings that another person experiences, putting himself in his place;

Empathy is the feeling of the feelings of another.

The empathic ability of a person increases with the growth of life experience.

There are three types of empathy:

  • emotional empathy based on the mechanisms of imitation of the behavior of another person;
  • cognitive empathy based on intellectual processes (comparison, analogy, etc.);
  • predictive empathy, manifested as the ability of a person to predict the reactions of another in specific situations.

Key to the test.

The number of correct answers on each scale is counted, and then the total score is determined. The scores on each scale can vary from 0 to 6 points and indicate the significance of a particular parameter in the structure of empathy.

1. Rational channel of empathy: +1, +7, -13, +19, +25, -31;

2. Emotional channel of empathy: -2, +8, -14, +20, -26, +32;

3. Intuitive channel of empathy: -3, +9, +15, +21, +27, -33;

4. Empathy Settings: +4, -10, -16, -22, -28, -34;

5. Empathy Penetration: +5, -11, -17, -23, -29, -35

6. Identification in empathy: +6, +12, +18, -24, +30, -36.

Interpretation of results.

The indicators of individual scales and the overall total assessment of the level of empathy are analyzed.

In this method, 6 tendencies (scales) are distinguished in the structure of empathy.

Rational channel of empathy characterizes the focus of attention, perception and thinking empathizing on the essence of any other person - on his condition, problems, behavior. This is a spontaneous interest in the other, opening the floodgates of the partner's emotional and intuitive reflection. In the rational component of empathy, one should not look for the logic or motivation of interest in the other. The partner attracts attention with his beingness, which allows the empathizer to unbiasedly reveal his essence.

The emotional channel of empathy. The ability of the empathic person to enter into the same emotional "wave" with those around him is fixed - to empathize, to participate. Emotional responsiveness in this case becomes a means of “entering” the energy field of the partner. Understanding his inner world, predicting behavior and effectively influencing is possible only if there has been an emotional adjustment to the empathized person. Participation and empathy act as a link, a guide from the empathic to the empathic and vice versa.

Intuitive channel of empathy. A score indicates a person's ability to see the behavior of partners, to act in conditions of a lack of objective information about them, based on the experience stored in the subconscious. At the level of intuition, various information about partners is formed. Intuition is less dependent on stereotypes than a meaningful understanding of partners.

Attitudes that promote or hinder empathy respectively, facilitate or hinder the operation of all empathic channels. The effectiveness of empathy is reduced if a person tries to avoid personal contacts, considers it inappropriate to show curiosity about another person, convinced himself to be calm about the experiences and problems of others. Such mindsets sharply limit the range of emotional responsiveness and empathic perception. On the contrary, various channels of empathy operate more actively and more reliably if there are no obstacles from personality attitudes.

penetrating power in empathy is regarded as an important communicative property of a person, which allows creating an atmosphere of openness, trust, sincerity. Each of us, by our behavior and attitude towards partners, contributes to verbal-emotional exchange or hinders it. Relaxation of the partner promotes empathy, and the atmosphere of tension, unnaturalness, suspicion prevents disclosure and empathic comprehension.

Identification- Another indispensable condition for successful empathy. This is the ability to understand another on the basis of feelings, putting oneself in the place of a partner. Identification is based on lightness, mobility and flexibility of emotions, the ability to imitate.

Scale scores perform an auxiliary role and interpretation of the main indicator - the level of empathy. The total score can theoretically vary from 0 to 36 points.

Can you feel others? A special empathy test will help you figure this out! 99% accuracy!

Empathy... How much in this... feeling!

Yes, empathy¹ is the ability to feel the emotions and moods of other people, to experience other people's worries as your own.

This unique ability allows the one who possesses it to learn everything about a person with the help of his inner sensation.

To one degree or another, we all feel the emotions and moods of other people, but what happens if we develop this ability?

The gift of empathy opens up incredible opportunities!

This is an invaluable find for any relationship!

Imagine…

You are getting a job!

Come to your boss and wait for an interview. You have a couple of minutes, and during this time you can do a lot, a lot. What does a leader need? Your resume? Not at all! Read his thoughts, feel his condition, his desires, and tell him what he wants to hear! Yes, any employer will immediately “tear you off with arms and legs”!

What if you fell in love?

And don't know how to get attention? Are you afraid to reveal your feelings? Are you afraid of being rejected? “Read” a person and you will know how he treats you. Moreover, you will know what he wants and what he dreams of, what type he likes! Give him what he is waiting for, and you will not be equal!

Not to mention deceit, betrayal, lies...

If you have the gift of empathy, no one else can deceive you!

Do you want it?

Let's first find out if you have a predisposition to this gift! This unique empathy test will help you with this.

Empathy test!

To complete this empathy test, you will need an assistant :)

1. Ask a loved one or friend to sit across from you and remember something that is important and meaningful to them (you don't have to know what).

2. While he is thinking, you try to tune in to your assistant. Try to feel what he is thinking.

You don't have to guess his thoughts, no!

You only need to tune in to the emotional background of this person, to feel whether his thoughts are positive or negative.

And perhaps you will be able to determine their nature even more subtly?

For example, you can feel that a person is thinking about love or something pleasant that causes pleasure in him, or, on the contrary, feels anger, irritation or resentment.

3. After you thought you felt your helper's emotions, ask him if you sensed his state correctly.

Empathy Test Results!

1. If you were able to correctly determine the nature of emotions (positive or negative), then you definitely have the ability to feel other people. You should develop in this direction!

2. If you were able to correctly guess the shades of emotions of your assistant, then you are probably already an empath. All that remains for you is to learn how to manage this gift in order to use it to your advantage.

3. If you misunderstood the emotions of your assistant or could not feel anything, then, most likely, empathy is not yours (although in this case it is advisable to repeat the experience).
