- ONE OF THE BEST MODERN DICTIONARIES

Dictionary Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners was published on March 22, 2002, and is currently one of the best dictionaries in the English language. In it you can find words or new meanings that have appeared in the language relatively recently and are not reflected in other similar publications (Botox, aneurysms, Grammys, etc.). In December 2002, the dictionary received the most prestigious award in literature for learners of English, the Duke of Edinburgh's Prize. In 2004, the publisher's dictionaries - Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners And Macmillan Essential Dictionary receive a new award - the British Council Innovation Award for the creation of reference materials for learners of English (the British Council Innovation Awards 2004).

According to lexicographers, dictionaries related to the so-called desktop dictionaries are optimal, the number of words in them is from 60,000 to 100,000, so that the user always has the opportunity to grow. The more words the dictionary contains, the longer it will remain a reference book. It is to this type that MED belongs. It contains over 100,000 entries and 80,000 examples of words used in various contexts. This is more than any other dictionary of the same level offers. The MED reflects not only British, American and Australian English, which are found in many dictionaries, but also South African and Indian English.

The creators of the dictionary used a number of unique tricks to make the process of using the dictionary as convenient as possible. Colorful illustrations help to explain the meaning of some words (names of animals, flowers, fruits).

In order to give an explanation of 100,000 words, only 2500 words are used, which are listed in a separate list at the end of the dictionary.

The most commonly used words are highlighted in red. Study these words (there are 7500 in total) - and you will be able to understand 88 percent of any text, as well as freely express your thoughts both orally and in writing.

Words with more than five meanings have convenient menus that help you find the right meaning of the word in a matter of seconds. Phrases and phraseological expressions containing a particular word are given in alphabetical order at the end of the dictionary entry, which greatly simplifies the search system.

The dictionary gives the user not just lexicographic information (for example, "black" is the darkest color), but also provides additional information about the ways in which a given word is used in the language, in addition, where necessary, there are cultural and historical references. Also, in the dictionary, questions of compatibility of words are considered. All this is extremely important when learning a new language.

In addition to the printed version, there is also a full electronic version of the dictionary. MED CD-ROM has an improved word search system and many additional features: the ability to listen to more than 100,000 lexical units in American and British English; record, listen and train pronunciation, view the meaning and pronunciation of a particular word and expression, working in any editor, program or the Internet; check the spelling of any written word; add additional information to any keyword, create your own word lists, etc.

Everyone is free to visit this site. www.macmillandictionary.com and use the resources presented there, subscribe to the newsletter, which contains a lot of useful information. For example, the section "Word of the Week" will provide an opportunity for new words that appear in the language every day. These words cannot be found in any dictionary!

Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners- one of the best dictionaries, which not only reflects the current state of the English language, but also contains unique reference material. He will be your good friend and reliable assistant in any situation.

Everything about Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners

The modern process of modernizing the content of education, the activities of educational institutions in preparing students for passing the Unified State Exam set an indispensable goal for teachers: to teach how to extract additional educational information from authoritative, objective sources and, thus, help the student organize independent, autonomous work in the classroom, and beyond.

The appearance of each new textbook on grammar, vocabulary, phonetics pleases the teacher and allows his students to take another step in improving their language skills and speech skills. And it is especially valuable when one study guide combines a grammar reference, expands and systematizes the student's lexical range, includes a sound application for mastering the pronunciation of new words and helps in many other ways.

The Macmillan Advanced Dictionary for Advanced Learners can be a reference book for any English learner.

The dictionary was released on March 22, 2002 and is currently one of the best dictionaries in the English language. Why? If we put ourselves in the place of the user of the dictionary, and highlight those key points that he pays attention to, we can easily answer this question.

Dictionary size and level (number of words, examples)

According to lexicographers, the most optimal are dictionaries related to the so-called desktop dictionaries. The optimal number of words is between 60,000 and 100,000 so that the user always has room for growth.

Publication date

It is important that the information contained in the dictionary reflects the current state of the language. The dictionary was published in 2002, however, this is the first, and not the next revised edition of the dictionary. In the dictionary, you can find words or new meanings that have appeared in the language relatively recently and are not reflected in other similar publications (Botox, aneurysms, Grammys, Class A drugs, etc.). In December 2002, the dictionary received the most prestigious award in literature for learners of English, the Duke of Edinburgh's Prize. In 2004, the publisher's dictionaries - Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners and Macmillan Essential Dictionary - received a new award - the British Council Innovation Award for the creation of reference materials for learners of English (the British Council Innovation Awards 2004).

Availability of illustrations

The illustrations help to explain the meaning of some words (names of animals, flowers, fruits). The dictionary (MED) contains over 1,000 illustrations plus a 16 page picture dictionary. Moreover, the illustrations used to explain the action verbs are made in the form of funny drawings.

Convenience in using the dictionary (organization of lexical material)

The creators of the dictionary used a number of unique techniques to make the process of using the dictionary as convenient as possible.

In order to give an explanation of 100,000 words, only 2,500 words are used, which are listed in a separate list at the end of the dictionary.

The most commonly used words are highlighted in red. Learn these words - there are only 7,500 of them - and you will be able to understand 88% of any text, as well as freely express your thoughts both orally and in writing.

Words with more than five meanings have convenient menus that help you find the desired meaning of a multi-valued word in a matter of seconds. Phrases and phraseological expressions containing a particular word are given in alphabetical order at the end of the dictionary entry, which greatly simplifies the search system.

The dictionary gives the user not just lexicographic information (for example, "black" is the darkest color), but also provides additional information about how the word is used in the language. In addition, where necessary, there are cultural and historical references, the contextual meanings of words are considered. This is very important when learning a new language. For example, how to use the word "black" in relation to people of the black race. The dictionary deals with the issues of word compatibility. According to research, it is easier to learn a language if you know the laws of word combination.

Availability of additional reference information

The dictionary contains a 22-page reference section containing additional reference information that is of interest to specialists and learners of the English language. Reference information was written by well-known specialists - lexicologists.

Availability of the full electronic version of the dictionary.

Extremely true facts about MED

MED is wiser than an oak,
MED is funnier than a joke,
MED is smaller than a ship,
MED is far redder than a sheep.

To use MED you ought to have good memory, desire,
much time to learn it all.
And then you'll only understand
that MED is the best of all the dictionaries and notes.

And that's extremely true.
MED is whiter than snow,
MED is longer than "Hello",
MED is not as wooden as a tree,
But it's more square than your knee.

Why do we speak about it?
Because that's the thing
That all the students need to have
to get an excellent mark at the exam.

They must at any rate read it everyday
Before going to bed.
And that's the famous MED!

For all of us, the appearance on the Russian market of the latest dictionary of the Macmillan publishing house of the Intermediate level has become a joyful event, MACMILLAN ESSENTIAL DICTIONARY, that is, a dictionary designed specifically to solve all the problems of learning, not only in the general education program, but in order to master the advanced level program.

Why exactly did this dictionary attract our attention? Even a cursory, formal flipping at the first meeting draws attention to the words printed in red - these are examples of the 3,500 most common words in modern English, and the number of red asterisks near the same word, for example, 3 asterisks, indicates that this is the most common word Intermediate level of more than 200 million words. Look at the special insert - the Language Study section (after p. 492), the table of contents of which speaks of the uniqueness of the educational material presented: basic topics), Pronunciation , Metaphor , Word Formation , Register , Text Types . Using the audio application (CD - ROM) gives you the opportunity not only to listen to the British or American pronunciation, but also to record your own pronunciation and compare it with the sample. The student can independently check the spelling of a word using the unique sound search Sound Search, and with access to tasks, games and tests on the Internet through the Macmillan Essential Dictionary CD - ROM, replenish their vocabulary in a playful way. These and many other characteristics of this dictionary make it an indispensable, effective teaching aid for use by students starting from grades 6-7.

We only welcome the use of this authentic, modern material both in the course of a regular working lesson and in the defense of a project, abstract, or report. We teach students to use the help of a dictionary for arguing statements, for students to check each other and self-test when writing training and independent pre-test papers.

In June of this year, 11th grade students of secondary school No. 1940 had the opportunity to use only this English-English dictionary as reference literature during the final exam for a full secondary school course. They showed a high level of knowledge and skills not only in working with an unfamiliar text, but also in the field of monologue and dialogic speech.

Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners is one of the most "Oscar-winning" explanatory dictionaries, has received a lot of all kinds of awards and encouragement from lexicographers. It has already been reprinted many times and, accordingly, supplemented. To date, it contains more than 100,000 dictionary entries and no fewer examples of the use of certain words. Reflects several regional dialects of the English language. The most common words are marked in the dictionary with special icons, because such a concept as "frequency" is very important for language learners.

In general, I believe that for every person studying English, this dictionary is simply irreplaceable. I'll show the hero's face.

The dictionary has already a slightly shabby appearance, which is not surprising. But I'm not keeping it close at hand for beauty, right?

The dictionary has a brief instruction on how to use it (at first it helps a lot, especially in terms of deciphering abbreviations). In addition, it has a small grammar guide, additional materials on reading rules and a very interesting insert of articles called Language Awareness, which introduces us to the features of a particular area of English use, contains some cultural references.

This material, for example, will tell us the basics of the politically correct use of certain phrases, etc.

The Macmillan dictionary is very voluminous, almost 1700 pages. Carrying it with you is not an option for sure, you can kill it like that.

In the era of electronic books, why do we need such a colossus? I also have an electronic version of this dictionary on my smartphone just in case, but I prefer to work with a paper version, since I need to quickly cover the entire dictionary entry in one glance, and not painfully scroll through the smartphone screen in search of the desired word form.

The font is quite small, and it will be difficult for people with very poor eyesight to work with this dictionary, unfortunately.

However, his fantastic coverage of all sorts of topics is simply amazing. I have never come across a word whose interpretation I would not be able to find in this dictionary.

The cover of the dictionary is soft, but with my crazy hands it is "dressed" in a thick layer of adhesive tape and now it won't tear even if I drop it. And dropping books with such bindings is contraindicated - they will simply fall apart into halves.
