About the book “Half code. The One Who Kills - Sally Greene

How often have you had to read interesting books that tell about the war among people, but at the same time completely different creatures are fighting, magical, unusual. This is exactly what Sally Green's work called “Half Code. The one who kills." This book is ordinary, but not everyone can understand it.

In the foreground of the book, Nathan Breen is a minor who is different from the average person. He does not go to school, does not communicate with his peers, instead he spends his nights in chains, in a cage, from which he is rarely allowed to leave. His whole life is sports and running, as well as the hard fate of cleaning the house. Nathan has to live with someone who teaches him to be strong, to defend himself in order to achieve a single goal.

Life in a cage seemed like hell to him, he tried several times to escape, but this did not bring results, and once he was severely beaten and almost lost his arm. Fortunately, thanks to the regeneration, the guy quickly recovered. As it turns out, his childhood was not the most pleasant. His parents are the Dark Magician and the White Witch, who did not want him in principle. Nevertheless, the family had a grandmother, Aaran, who always loved the boy. Soon letters began to come to him and then he had to go through a check and find out his code. However, it was never possible to recognize him, the result was always the same: unknown.

Nathan is the owner of a half code, which means that it contains half white and black magic. He has to choose where to go. Nathan has neither life nor opinion, he cannot go anywhere without the order of the Council, which, however, pursues the only goal - to kill his father. Soon the guy notices that he is becoming similar to his father - the Dark Magician, who loved the White Witch. Soon the boy meets his beloved, also White. How will the Council react to this? What will he do? How will the guy be punished? You can find out about this if you start reading the book “Half Code. The one who kills."

Sally Green decided not to stop there and created another love line in the work, this time - unconventional. Gabriel, Nathan's new friend, suddenly falls in love with him and does not hide his feelings. Nathan does not know how to react to this and what to do, and in general, is it worth talking to Gabriel now?

Despite the fact that Sally Greene used unconventional love in the book, the work did not turn out to be snotty, rather, on the contrary, it was cruel and unusual. Gabriel's love is not disgusting to Nathan, but he has a lover and he is not going to change it. Equivalently, this love is not repugnant to the reader, it is normally perceived, there is nothing here that could disgust adherents of the traditional orientation. It was here that the author was able to show her ability to smooth out the conflict.

Disclaimer: This review was written back in 2017 on a piece of paper in a hostel in the Netherlands. Yes, I was so bombed. I will throw away the paper, and let the text remain in the depths of the Internet.

Most likely the review was written after reading the whole trilogy, so SPO YLE R Y.

"Half code" is a failure.

And if at first it was so bad that it was even good, then after seeing how many people are really imbued with the "depth" of this work, my ass was on fire. Narrative is like a board: flat, wooden and one-dimensional. Characters are not revealed in any way, except for their appearance. Roughly and carelessly outlined backstories, the complete absence of any emotions, except, I don’t know, primitive, instinctive ones: anger, fear (and even those negative ones). Love? Ha. Sally, if a character says "I love you" a hundred times, it's so vulgar that you don't believe him one bit. Look, in "The Crows" (which I just finished before the PC), sparks fly not only from looks and thoughts, but from everyday phrases like "pass the sandwich."

The world here is also flat - checkmate and checkmate, ball * would. (Miori from 2019: god is this meme almost 3 years old) The essence of the conflict is another dystopia, where the good ones turn out to be not so good. And everything is pouring on the fact that the local good in fact are evil in the absolute. Yes, and they do their villainy somewhere aside, so that, God forbid, we imagine them for a millisecond as human beings with at least some feelings and do not think that this is the main character - an asshole psychopath.

Oh, Nathan, daddy's Neanderthal of the Neanderthals. The train of thought of the level "I went. I go." Thinking somersaults like: "Fuck me your Alliance! ---> I'll join if you give me the knife." And it becomes simply ridiculous when, just a few pages later, Nathan himself preaches to the doubting Gabby about the benefits of the Alliance. "Anna Lisa? I love Anna Lisa. All for her. Killed the folder (I'm not even talking about the fact that she was really in a state of passion)---> I hate her! She is to blame for everything. If the court does not kill her, I will do it. (with - justice). No, I myself will never go to trial. "And the Alliance? Start a war in order to think about leaving in its midst? Ridiculous.

For all 3 books, I did not see ANY positive quality of the protagonist. And how can I empathize with him? And the rest of the characters, who are like dummies in the store, have an emotional range of shells. Pleased except that Celia is the only non-flat heroine, and even with adequate motivation.

It seems that Sally was so carried away by the dark and dark that she forgot about everything bright. And without light there is no shadow, because the message of darkness looks like a caricature. "Half code" is solid black. That is, nothing.

P.S. from 2019: Re-reading this review now, I sincerely don't understand why the book has gray stars. But since that I from the past decided so, there must have been reasons for this.

Quotes from the book “Half Code. The one who dies" Sally Green

Maybe this is his plan. He will kill until only the two of them remain - he and Gabriel.

“So… do I have to cut off my finger?”
“I don’t see how else it will end up in a bottle.
- What if it doesn't work? “Nothing, you will get an original decoration for the mantelpiece.

- You've been absent for a long time. Where have you been?
I'm gone, but not forever.

In front of me is a river, trees, gentle hills, birds sing all around, the warm sun caresses my skin. It's very beautiful around. This is the kind of place I've always wanted to live. And there, next to me is Gabriel, and I am with him.

Every day I go there to read. I read aloud to him, as before, only now it is mostly poetry. I am sitting on the grass in the shade of a walnut tree that has grown in the meadow. It is not like other trees, and stands apart from them; it is not old, not tall, but its trunk and branches are covered with terrible scars.
