Nutritional features of athletes involved in strength sports

Strength sports include weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and kettlebell lifting.

The main task of an athlete involved in strength sports is the active development of muscle strength. The principle of diet planning for strength sports is to take into account the individual characteristics of each athlete’s body. In order to organize a balanced diet for those involved in this sport, it is necessary to have information about physical data and the results of medical tests. After this, the calories consumed are calculated. Particular care in calculations is typical for bodybuilding. Sometimes it even happens that an athlete-bodybuilder must weigh each piece of food before eating it.

These sports are characterized by high-calorie nutrition, especially during the period of weight gain. The average calorie content of a weightlifter's daily diet is up to 5000 kcal for men and up to 4000 kcal for women.

In cases where weightlifters and bodybuilders need particularly accurate calorie counting, it is necessary to take the general characteristics of the physique as a basis. To record energy expended and calorie consumption, it is convenient to keep a diary in which the amount of food eaten is noted and its calorie content is calculated using tables taken from special reference books. This data will help you find out the calorie content of certain foods and their nutrient content. Given the information available, you can more easily change the composition of food in order to achieve a certain result. Once the diet has been accurately determined, subsequent calculations will no longer be needed, since the body’s need for food is constantly changing.

The selection of a diet should be carried out in accordance with the intended goal - gaining weight, losing fat, building muscle strength, etc. Each type of diet should be constant for 2 weeks to 1 month, then you can adjust the diet, coordinating it with a trainer and doctor.

The period of weight gain is very important for both bodybuilders and weightlifters. At this time, it is necessary to ensure maximum intake of protein foods into the body. In this regard, the problem of some athletes’ indiscriminateness in the sources of this substance arises. This approach gives questionable results, and often disables the entire body. With an unreasonable, unregulated supply of protein, a huge amount of adipose tissue builds up on the muscles, which is then very difficult to get rid of. During the period of weight gain, the athlete needs to consume about 2 g of protein per 1 kg of body weight per day, in some cases this figure can be increased to 3 g.

The content of carbohydrates in the diet of a strength athlete is very important, since they are the main source of energy. Carbohydrates should make up a significant portion of your food intake. If you follow a low-calorie diet, you should pay attention to the ratio of carbohydrates and proteins in food. Normally, the carbohydrate content should be 2 times higher than the protein content. Fat intake can account for up to 30% of total calories, but most of it, at least 2/3, should be unsaturated fats. Low-fat diets, often unjustifiably used by athletes, do not always help eliminate fat deposits. Insufficient intake of unsaturated fats leads to the fact that the body begins to save it and the rate of lipogenesis drops sharply. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully monitor how the body reacts to excess or lack of fat.

Increasing the amount of protein in food leads to the need to increase water consumption, as this allows you to cleanse the body of harmful metabolites. The water regime for power sports is not as critical as in speed-strength sports, but you need to drink about 2 liters of fluid per day, excluding tea and coffee, which have diuretic properties. Particular attention should be paid to the quality of consumed water, as it determines the quality of the building material.

The diet of weightlifters and bodybuilders is high in calories, so the body often receives excess salt. In such cases, it is necessary to monitor the salt balance and limit sodium intake. Excessive salt consumption causes water retention in the body, as a result of which the muscles seem to be swimming in water. Lack of salt causes electrolyte imbalances, which in turn can cause heart and brain problems. A lack of other minerals can lead to serious disorders in the body and decreased performance, especially for substances such as zinc, magnesium, and calcium.

In strength sports, especially in bodybuilding, various nutritional supplements are widely used. The most popular are proteins and amino acids. The intake of protein-carbohydrate and amino acid preparations must correspond to the set goals and objectives, as well as the composition of the basic diet. You should not get carried away with the consumption of individual amino acids; they should complement and balance the diet, but not replace it. The best sources of essential amino acids are meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, cheeses, nuts and legumes.

A rational approach is also necessary when selecting a vitamin complex. A good multivitamin is absolutely essential, but you should choose your vitamins wisely and use moderation in dosages.

The vitamin complex and its dosage must comply with the doctor’s recommendations.

Strength athletes are advised to supplement with protein, creatine, multivitamins, mineral salts, and moderate amounts of amino acids.

During intense training, the body of bodybuilders and weightlifters loses a large amount of salts and minerals through sweat. In this regard, simultaneously with the additional introduction of medications into the body, it is necessary to carefully choose the method of preparing dishes from vegetables and fruits. It is known that when boiling, frying and stewing, plant foods lose 70% of their nutritional properties, so it is best to bake vegetables in the oven with the peel or steam them so that the minerals do not go into the water and disappear. Fruits should also not be subjected to heat treatment; it is better to consume them in their natural form or in the form of freshly squeezed juice. All kinds of dried fruits (dried apricots, prunes, raisins, apricots, figs, apples, pears) are very healthy, rich in vitamins and microelements. Before eating dried fruits, they should be thoroughly washed with running water, then filled with hot water and boiled over low heat for disinfection for 1-2 minutes. You can add honey and any juice to your taste to dried fruits. This mixture quenches thirst well and replenishes the body’s lack of minerals and vitamins.

The diet of weightlifters and bodybuilders must include vegetable and fruit juices. Carrot juice contains a large amount of carotene, which activates the activity of the visual analyzer and improves immunity. Carrot juice is good to combine with other vegetable juices (cucumber, pumpkin, beetroot), rich in vitamins and nutrients. Tomato juice quenches appetite and thirst well. During periods of active sports activity, it is recommended to consume it in portions of up to 3 glasses per day with the addition of lemon or orange juice. Tomato juice is superior in vitamin content to many citrus fruits, and also contains potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron salts. It is recommended to consume fresh tomatoes without heat treatment. 200 g of ripe tomatoes contain the dose of carotene and ascorbic acid required by an athlete per day. Ripe tomatoes are rich in easily digestible glucose, pectin and organic acids, which help activate the digestion process and have a neutralizing effect on pathogenic intestinal bacteria.

During the period of intensive body weight regulation, weightlifters and bodybuilders should consume food in a liquid and liquid state to facilitate the work of the gastrointestinal tract. Such food includes all kinds of fruit and vegetable salads and juices, lean first courses, and dairy products. For better absorption, meat, fish and mushrooms must be passed through a meat grinder or chopped in a blender. Nuts are a good source of protein. It has been established that 500 g of peeled walnuts correspond in nutritional value to 1700 g of beef or 1 liter of milk. The plant proteins contained in nuts are considered equivalent to the proteins of meat and milk, but, unlike the mentioned products, they do not contain any harmful substances. When including nuts in the diet of athletes, it should be taken into account that the body absorbs no more than 150 g of nuts at one time. To ensure complete absorption of nuts, they must be chewed thoroughly or consumed in ground form.

Many bodybuilding and weightlifting athletes prefer to eat foods that help them gain weight as quickly as possible. However, this method is fundamentally incorrect, since weight gain should occur only due to muscle, and not fat, bone tissue and internal organs. The use of natural products and additives, their quality and methods of preparation determine certain consequences of food intake. With the correct use of products and drugs intended for weight gain, it is the muscles that increase in size. The supply of energy through artificial means should compensate for its costs. The intake of calories from fatty foods is more conducive to the accumulation of fat reserves than the absorption of proteins and carbohydrates. The reason for the increase in body fat is the easy accumulation of saturated fats in the cells. In addition to the fact that excessive fat consumption cannot contribute to the growth of athletic performance, it can provoke dangerous diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The way out of this situation is a balanced intake of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Protein and carbohydrates contain about half the calories of fat. These calories can also be stored as fat, but only with unlimited consumption. With proper nutrition, proteins and carbohydrates help build the necessary muscles and improve overall performance. Insulin plays a critical role in building muscle tissue and storing fat, with the help of which nutrients are extracted from the blood and delivered to various organs and tissues of the body. You can maintain a constant insulin level by eating fractionally, that is, at short intervals of 2-4 hours. With normal levels of insulin in the body, an athlete can maintain a high metabolic rate and a constant flow of energy. A single meal with a high amount of calories causes an insulin burst, after which more calories are available to all tissues of the body than necessary.

Nutrients not used for energy are stored in the body as fat, so bodybuilders and weightlifters should never consume protein mixtures or high-calorie foods while watching video programs. The explosion of insulin in the human body is beneficial only after active training, since the body's ability to absorb nutrients increases significantly within 1 hour after intense physical activity. The level of growth hormone and insulin increases sharply if an athlete immediately after training takes a mixture of proteins and carbohydrates. The most optimal period for consuming high-calorie foods is within 1.5 hours after training, and this should be the majority of the calories consumed that make up the entire daily diet. In this case, in the absence of parallel absorption of fat, not a single gram of excess fat is added to the body.

All-Russian Day of Strength Sports Athletes is held in Russia annually on the first Sunday of October.

Every year on the first Sunday in Russia the Day of Strength is celebrated - holiday in honor of strength sports athletes. In 2018, events are taking place.

In 2007, a survey was conducted on the forum of the website www.powerlifting.ru about the creation of this professional holiday. Most members of the Powerlifting Organization supported the idea, and its president approved this event by decree. The first celebrations on this occasion took place in 2008. Later, other strength sports leagues and associations joined the celebration. Traditionally, festivals of strength, tournaments and competitions are held on this day.

Interesting Facts

In 1857, the first gyms for bodybuilding were invented in Switzerland, and the Russian royal family became one of the first customers.

With the advent of powerlifting in Russia, it, along with martial arts, began to be considered a sport of privileged and rich people (the bourgeoisie). Despite this, enthusiasts equipped the halls themselves, and in order not to close them, they began to call this sport athletic gymnastics.

In 2011, the Russian athlete D. Ivanov lifted a load of 460 kilograms in the Squat discipline at the IPF World Championship. However, the record was not counted because the other exercise (bench press) was not completed.

Measured strength is not enough for us,
We are pushing beyond the edge, beyond the limit!
And let the veins burst,
Calmness is the destiny of the faded.

We measured our strength with the gods,
We can extend time
And the iron bends beneath us,
Our spirit cannot win.

We are fighting death, aging.
And each of our new records
Knowledge will pierce with insight,
You, life, powerlifting is not a sport!

Interview with Andrey Viktorovich Repnitsyn, President of the WPC/WPO Federation of the Sverdlovsk Region.

Andrey Viktorovich, to begin with, according to tradition, a little about myself.
I was born in the city of Tomsk, November 23, 1974, at zero hours and zero minutes, right on the border of Scorpio and Sagittarius. When I was one and a half years old, my parents moved to Yekaterinburg. In 1992, he graduated from school and entered the Ural State Technical University - UPI as a full-time student at the Faculty of Radio Engineering. In 1994, he transferred to the evening department of the Faculty of Economics and Management at an enterprise and at the same time went to work. I just wanted it that way.
He touched the bar for the first time on December 10, 1991. Trained from books by Joe Weider and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I learned about powerlifting only in 2001. In 2002, he performed for the first time at the Sverdlovsk Region Powerlifting Championship in Alapaevsk, where he immediately fulfilled the standard of a candidate for Master of Sports of Russia. In 2003, he stopped performing due to a serious injury. I wanted to grow from a third-rate student to a master in a year and a half, and I paid for it.
Since then I have been training for myself. Periodically alternating fitness, yoga, boxing. I love boxing very much, but I try not to abuse it, I’m not the same age anymore.
In February 2007, I was appointed regional representative of the WPC powerlifting federation for the Sverdlovsk region. Along with mine, two more candidates were considered, one of which was the candidacy of the late Vladimir Korepanov, a sports functionary famous throughout Russia. Nevertheless, Yuri Ustinov gave the position to me.
I am also the vice-president of the public organization “Association of Strength Sports of the Sverdlovsk Region”, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the adoption of the holiday “All-Russian Day of Strength Sports Athletes” - “Strength Day”.
At the same time, I participate a little in the political life of our country. I am a member of the Political Council of the Kirov branch of the United Russia Party, deputy secretary of the Political Council and Chairman of the Commission for Youth and Sports of the same branch.

You are called a mega-active functionary. Indeed, according to press releases, the number of events you hold in the Sverdlovsk region is simply enormous. Although a couple of years ago practically nothing was heard. What is the secret of such rapid progress?
Yes, indeed, the number and level of tournaments we hold, as well as the number of athletes participating in them, is still growing like an avalanche. In 2007, the first year of my reign at the WPC of the Sverdlovsk region, we held only three tournaments. The next one is six. And in the first five months of 2009 alone, under the auspices of the WPC, seven competitions were held in the Sverdlovsk region! And three more are planned. A total of ten is possible. It could have been more, but the May monitoring showed that this is still the limit, and even more often athletes are simply not able to perform. And as far as I know, no other Russian regional powerlifting representative, of any federation, holds such a number of tournaments. However, the “powerlifting competition market” (so to speak) in the Sverdlovsk region is close to saturation.
In terms of the number of athletes, the picture is even more rosy. If in 2007, in winter, in our region there were about 30 athletes competing according to the WPC version, and at our first competitions, in June, a little more than 50 took part, today our database contains almost 700 (!) athletes . And this is in just two years! I think by the end of the year we will be able to see a nice figure of 1000 people or so.
We are also not lagging behind in the level of training of athletes. In our region, in Krasnouralsk, lives the absolute world champion, she is also the owner of the title “Woman of the Year of the City of Krasnouralsk 2008”, and simply a charming beauty, Marina Medvedeva, an interview with whom can be read on the Iron World website. Our veteran, Gennady Pereladov, has been winning everything possible in his age category for a long time in a row.
Our federation does not focus only on powerlifting. We help in organizing Power Extreme tournaments in the Sverdlovsk region. Strongmen are often former powerlifting athletes and therefore we have a lot in common with them. In this regard, I would like to recall the recently held Team Championship of the city of Lesnoy in “Strength Extreme”, the ideological inspirer and main organizer of which was the regional representative of the powerlifting federation of the Sverdlovsk region WPC in the city of Lesnoy, Alexander Belyaev. At this tournament, one team, the “Bears,” consisted entirely of athletes - powerlifters competing according to the IPF version, the other, “Tigers,” consisted mainly of WPC athletes. Friendship prevailed to everyone's satisfaction. The “Bears” team was awarded by the President of the IPF Powerlifting Federation of the Sverdlovsk Region, the “Tigers” team - by me. It turned out very beautiful.
Secret of success? I think there is no one secret. Success is made up of numerous factors. First of all, this is daily work in the federation, even at a time when there are no competitions on the horizon - holding tournaments alone is not enough for successful development. It is also a constant movement forward and a great desire to do so. Under no circumstances should competitions be held at the same level as last year! In sports, as in business, there is no concept of stagnation; there is either movement forward or rollback. A repeat of last year is a setback.
A very important factor is establishing and maintaining good relationships with numerous people, ranging from government officials at all levels, leading sports officials and ending with ordinary athletes at the lowest level. You need to be friends with everyone in reality, and not just virtually on the Internet, on forums! A federation that, due to any “principles” or “rules,” “throws away” its athletes is doomed to collapse, regardless of the availability of accreditation and other paperwork. There are examples of this.
Well, another important factor for success is the selection of a good team. Moreover, it should include not only professionals in their field, but also people close to your views on the development of sports.

Last year, our country first heard about the celebration of “Day of Strength”. Six months earlier, the Iron World magazine was the first in Russia to publish an article stating that such a holiday was being introduced by the Organizing Committee, of which you are the chairman. Can you learn more about this initiative?
Day of Strength - All-Russian Day of Athletes of Strength Sports, appeared by resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Powerlifting Organization WPC in the winter of 2008. Prior to this, on my initiative, by voting at one of the “security” forums, it was decided on the need to adopt such a holiday for all “security officials” and on the choice of the date of celebration - the first Sunday of October. I will not dwell on the need for such a holiday; this is done in sufficient detail in the article you mentioned. I will only say that the adoption of the holiday at the state level is not such a pipe dream. Everything is quite realistic, but it is greatly extended in terms of time. I can add that if this happens, it will not be with the current composition of the State Duma.
By the way, for those who don’t know, there is an active discussion on the modernization of the “Day of Power” anthem on the Iron World website forum. There is already one version and it was even performed in the fall of 2008, on the first celebration of the “Day of Power”. Now there is a need to expand this creation. Those interested can join the discussion.

Tell us about the joint project of the two federations: Bench Press Tournament in memory of V. Koblov and D. Kurbanov.
This is a unique project in its nature; this has never happened before in the world. Each individual competition, fight or game, in any sport, is held under the auspices of one federation. In our case, the competition was held simultaneously under the auspices of two powerlifting federations, IPF and WPC. Diverging slightly from the topic, I will say that the IPF Federation is accredited by Rossport and its relations with other federations, associations and powerlifting organizations in Russia previously left much to be desired. But in 2008, a turning point occurred: at the flagship competition of our federation, the Multitournament “Golden Tiger - II”, a historic meeting took place between the Presidents of these two leading powerlifting federations, Gennady Ivanovich Khodosevich and Yuri Vladimirovich Ustinov, where the decision was made to “bury the hatchet” . Moreover, Gennady Ivanovich enthusiastically greeted our above-mentioned initiative to adopt the “All-Russian Day of Strength Sports Athletes.” And in 2009, under the auspices of the IPF, three tournaments dedicated to the “Day of Strength” will be held in Russia.
Let's get back to the tournament. Often, athletes who are members of one federation are prohibited from competing in competitions of other federations, under threat of lifelong disqualification. There are tournaments that are organized “outside all federations,” but even they cannot guarantee athletes full protection from “disqualification.” In support of the reached peace agreements, as well as with the support of the head of the local IPF branch, Svetlana Paltseva, we decided to hold the tournament simultaneously in two federations in order to firmly guarantee all athletes the safety of their sports careers. And to dedicate this tournament to the memory of people who are no longer with us, but who at one time did a lot for the development of powerlifting in the Urals: the former head of the IPF in the region, Vladimir Koblov, and the former coach of the Uralmash powerlifting team, Dmitry Kurbanov.
In my memory, no tournament has caused so many contradictions even before its start. Some athletes and functionaries persistently asked for it to be held at any cost. Others mercilessly criticized the work that had not yet been accomplished. Numerous paperwork issues raised doubts about the success of the planned event until the very last moment. However, the competition went very smoothly and with great fanfare. 80 athletes from both federations, from five regions, including Moscow, took part in them. By the way, at the grand opening, the Deputy Minister of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Sverdlovsk Region, Andrei Yuryevich Salov, was present, thereby confirming the seriousness of this undertaking.

Since we mentioned the “Golden Tiger” Multitournament, tell us what it is and, as they say, what they eat it with?
The “Golden Tiger” Multi-Tournament Series is the image tournament of our federation. They are aimed at promoting “strength” sports among broad sections of the population, primarily among young people. It is no secret that a certain part of the younger generation considers playing sports an unfashionable activity. Promoting a healthy lifestyle among them using traditional methods (sports competitions, mass races, etc.) is, to put it mildly, ineffective. The Golden Tiger Festival contains just those sports that can change the opinion of this group of youth regarding sports: powerlifting, bodybuilding, karate, Thai boxing, hand-to-hand combat, arm wrestling, judo, etc., a total of fourteen sports and two competitions, one of which is a beauty contest among short girls. Where would we be without the beautiful half of humanity?
I came up with the name “Golden Tiger” in the summer of 2007, when the need to create a landmark tournament in the Sverdlovsk region first arose. “Tiger” - because I was born in the year of the Tiger, and “Golden” is what every athlete strives for in any sport, for “gold”, gold medals.
As you know, the Arnold Sports Festival, a tournament that also includes numerous popular sports, has been taking place in the United States of America for more than twenty years. Of course, Schwarzenegger’s brainchild is an order of magnitude higher in level than our “Golden Tiger”. But we are only three years old and we do not stand still; we try to make each subsequent Multi-Tournament better, wider, larger, and of higher quality than the previous ones. Today we have assembled an excellent team of professional organizers, with positive and creative thinking, capable of working as independent units. This is Roman Dolgiy, Marina Medvedeva, Dmitry Murzin, Vasily Zhilyakov, Denis Maslakov, Konstantin Tolkachev, Anatoly Sirenko, Alexander Ponomarev, Anton Lunin, Yuri Hartung, Tatyana Repnitsyna, Dmitry Chertushkin, Alexey Brednev, Anastasia Ladygina, Sergey Ladyzhnikov, Natalya Danilova, Alexander Ospanov, Marina Malygina and many, many others. Some of them are current titled athletes, international masters of sports, champions and record holders of Russia, Europe and even absolute world champions! We are also actively supported by the President of the Euro-Asian Powerlifting Federation Yuri Ustinov, the President of the Uralstrong Association Dmitry Kononets, and a number of other high-ranking sports officials. I have not decided anything individually for a long time, all proposals are made, discussed and adopted at meetings of the Organizing Committee by simple open voting, and even if I vote “against” when everyone is “for”, I submit to the will of the majority. We have excellent, fruitful relations with almost all regional representatives of sports federations of many sports; we are actively supported by the administration of the Kirov region, the administration of the city of Yekaterinburg, the regional Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports, the City Duma represented by its Chairman, Evgeniy Nikolaevich Porunov, the House of Representatives of the Legislative Assembly Sverdlovsk region, the leading political party "United Russia". In the end, we are supported by our families, workmates, friends, which is also important. With such “baggage”, I consider the prospects for the development of all our projects, including the Golden Tiger Multi-Tournament, to be very, very bright. And may God help us.
