Space Marine Legions. Space Marines A to Z The Seventh Legion of Space Marines

To increase knowledge about the world.

Primarchs(English Primarch) are genetically enhanced superhumans created by the Emperor to command the Legions of Space Marines. All twenty children were created from the DNA of the Emperor himself. Their genetic material also formed the basis of the Legions they were to command.

Start:
Great Crusade.
20 legions. The so-called Legions of the first foundation. Nothing is known of the two legions and their primarchs. Information destroyed by the Inquisition.
Throughout the Great Crusade, all the Legions united and increased the size of the Human Imperium. At that time, the Emperor was not revered as a god. During this period, the number of Legions was not tightly controlled. Legions were represented by Homeworlds, stronghold bases, and huge, powerful armada fleets, often divided into several "fists".

Heresy of Horus.
To continue the crusade to unite all the planets of mankind, the Emperor of mankind appointed the Primarch Horus as commander of all forces. This decision displeased the leaders of the Space Marines, especially those who themselves were aiming for this position. Horus was corrupted by the Chaos Gods and betrayed the Emperor. He persuaded several Primarchs and their legions to defect to his side. These legions would later become the Chaos Space Marines and wage war on the Imperium. The young human Empire broke into many parts, each of which was fierce battles. In the end, Horus overcame the resistance of the Imperial forces and struck at the Earth, seeking to destroy the Emperor himself. A bloody and stubborn battle unfolded under the walls of the palace. In the end, the Emperor, along with two loyal primarchs and a detachment of the best paratroopers in Terminator armor, teleported to the headquarters of the rebels. Primarch Sanguinius was the first to attack Horus and fell at the hands of Horus, but according to one version, it was he who found / made a hole in Horus's armor. The duel between the Emperor and Horus ended badly for both sides. Horus fell at the hands of the Emperor, but the master of mankind was mortally wounded. In order to preserve the breath of life in the body of the Emperor, a gigantic life-support complex, the Golden Throne, was created on Earth under the guidance of the tech-priests of Mars.
If I'm not mistaken, they went over to the side of Horus, at the beginning of the Heresy, the 4th Legion: Bearers of the Word, Eaters of Worlds, Thousand Sons, Children of the Emperor. (And in the end 9 legions.)

Second Foundation.
The Horus Heresy became an era of strife as the Imperium was all but torn apart by civil war. Huge forces fell under the influence of Chaos, including at least 9 of the 20 Space Marine Legions. The heresy ended after the Emperor of Mankind defeated the traitor leader, Warmaster Horus, though he was mortally wounded in the process. As a result of this event, many weaknesses in the structure and organization of the Imperium were revealed. The High Lords of Terra have decreed that a massive reorganization is necessary to prevent catastrophes like the Horus Heresy.

The second foundation came seven years after Horus' defeat. The existing Space Marine Legions were broken up and reorganized into Chapters - smaller, more flexible formations.

One Order was ordered to leave the heraldry of the progenitor Legion, while the rest, known as the Orders-followers of the English. Successor Chapters, had to choose new names and heraldry. Most of the Legions broke up into five Chapters or less (weakened by the war), but the sheer numbers of Ultramarines Legion fighters helped create 23 successor Chapters.

Introduction. Creation.

The physique of the Space Marines is thought out in accordance with the design and appearance of power armor, created by the legendary Jes Goodwin. The purpose of the drawings is to bring the appearance of the Space Marines into line with published art and text materials from official copyright holders. The purpose of this article is to create a complete Space Marine character that fits 100% into the fabric of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and explains some of the features, such as why key characters in the images and stories, the Space Marine heroes, are larger than their counterparts.

!!! This article is purely fan speculation!!! , because I would like to highlight one of the aspects that was not reflected in the official Warhammer 40000 lore. In the comparison diagrams, power armor is 100% consistent with the images from Games Workshop, and the three-dimensional model was created by the author of the article based on the templates he used when designing the cover for the book "Deceitful Gods, published by Black Library. However, to avoid confusion and speculation, there has never been a request from the official copyright holders to create an image of a Space Marine not wearing power armor.

Space Marines and Power Armor.

The physiology of the Space Marines goes far beyond what we might consider the ultimate development of the human body. In the fortieth millennium, the inhabitants of the Imperium are faced with a much greater variety of what is the usual human form in our day.

The largest subspecies of man are classified as Ogryn, in size and weight it can surpass even Space Marines, the smallest is known as ratling and is vaguely similar to the hobbits that inhabit Middle-earth. People of the fortieth millennium differ from each other much more than representatives of different races on our Earth. Therefore, some of the inhabitants of the Imperium may well meet the most stringent standards for recruits capable of being reborn from ordinary people into space marines. Almost none of the current inhabitants of the Earth will fit them.

Armor matching.

I started with power armor templates as Jess Goodwin drew them. This is the official GW-approved image to give us an idea of the Space Marine's proportions. I used it as a base image, but made the stance less pretentious, and moved the legs closer to make it easier for me to model. The main goal was to prevent changes in proportions and design, which would allow the body of a Space Marine to be logically placed inside the armor.

Jes describes his vision for the Space Marines in part four of the Design Philosophy IV: Jes Goodwin Interview podcast. There he mentions that he believes the average Space Marine is between 230 cm and 260 cm tall and weighs "like four basketball players".

Armor and Space Marine.

Note: The armor was designed as a second skin for the Space Marine and his body is fully integrated into it via the Black Carapace interface. In terms of its thickness, power armor matches that of modern armored personnel carriers or infantry fighting vehicles, although it has a more complex composition based on ceramite, providing excellent protection against infantry weapons. Power armor is equipped with a power source and power circuits, allowing the Space Marine to move quickly despite the significant weight of the armor. In addition to the muscular strength of the Space Marine himself, the armor is driven by bundles of neuro and muscle fibers that entangle its frame and are located under the outer armor plates.

Flesh vs NVP/MB (Neuro-fiber bundles/muscle fibers)

Note: Muscle fibers have incredible strength, but use a monstrous amount of energy to produce it. This is a problem, as muscle fibers consume far more energy than most portable power systems can provide. And if, in theory, the Mechanicum could create an android powered by muscle fibers, they would not have a power grid compact enough to run it and keep it mobile (lost technology).

Therefore, relatively few muscle fibers are used in power armor, and the ratio of output power and energy consumption of armor is carefully calibrated.
Muscular fibers permeate almost every element of Space Marine armor. For each beam, a channel is laid that runs between the power armor frame and external armor plates. Channels securely fix muscle fibers, protecting the Space Marine from the fate of a cheese head slashed with red-hot wire. This also means that power armor looks quite thin from the outside, as there is no massive “muscle suit” or any massive power drives under the armor plates. The armor is worn directly on the space marine, and although this armor has a lining, it performs a lot of other, "non-power" functions (connecting the Black Shell interface, sealing, hygiene, comfort, cooling).

Diagrams of a Space Marine with skeleton and muscles.
This diagram shows the skeleton of a Space Marine with superimposed muscles and placed inside power armor. The armor has been altered to suit my personal preferences and the look of the Space Marine as shown in Rogue Trader, which is where I drew inspiration for this article. The most noticeable changes are in the design of the armor covering the hips and ankle exo-calipers.

Comparison of muscle mass

This scheme allows you to visually compare and understand how a Space Marine differs from the average man. When fully armed (far right), a Space Marine is significantly more massive than a normal human (far left). Most of the Space Marines' strength is not of divine origin, but their musculature is disproportionately more powerful and larger than a human's, and is located on a significantly modified skeleton. A Space Marine's body resembles a gorilla or a chimpanzee in terms of muscle type and muscular force. They are devilishly strong simply because of how talented they were "engineered".

Strength: Combined with Power Armor, it's obvious how effortlessly a Space Marine will move an ordinary human, open a locked door, or overcome any other obstacle. A punch will throw an already lifeless person into the air for many meters. A Space Marine is big enough to grab a man by the ankles and swing them like makeshift nunchucks to cut his way through any crowd, even if those "nunchaku" will quickly become useless due to their fragility, but the crowd around him consists of the same weapons!

Growth and development

Due to their unique metabolism and super-fast regeneration, the Space Marine is always at the peak of his powers and continues to grow for many centuries. Although their growth eventually slows down with age, it will take several millennia for a Space Marine to reach a state of "dynamic equilibrium". But due to their way of life, it is unlikely that any of the Space Marines will live to the age when the strength begins to leave his body. Even Grand Lord Dante, Grand Master of the Blood Angels, is still growing, albeit slowly. His body is in amazing condition and will be so for many millennia. It is also noteworthy that, having reached the stage of a "mature" Space Marine, he began to develop albeit still subtle psyker abilities, such as precognition, and he becomes more and more like his beloved primarch, the most holy imperial archangel: Sanguinius.

Stages of Growth: Space Marine Scouts are about 200 cm tall, Space Marines of Tactical Squads, who have exchanged more than a century in height, are about 230 cm. After this, the growth rate slows down, but does not stop, and the oldest warriors of the Chapters who have lived for many centuries are 260 cm or more. (excluding genetic anomalies).
A common person: This is a human, about 180 cm tall. Any of the Space Marine initiates are taller, their growth line is marked with a red dotted line.
Dedicated: Space Marines are selected from among outstanding people, born warriors, whose height exceeds 195 cm. It is rare that a person over 210 cm tall is taken, since such dimensions often entail internal defects in organs and skeleton, or owners of such sizes cannot boast of stable genes.
End of the Initiate Phase (Scout): This is the Initiate who will become a Scout, he has passed all the tests and training, in addition, he can already be implanted with the "Black Carapace". Power armor is designed with interchangeable modules, but none of them will fit a wearer who is less than 230 cm tall.
Space Marine: Space Marines continue to grow rapidly for the first two centuries of their lives, and during this period, elements of their equipment are updated at intervals of 5-10 years. As they grow, they pass on armor components to their younger brothers and in turn receive pieces of equipment from veterans of the Order. Accepting the elements of armor is a whole ritual. During these times, most newly converted Space Marines die in battle, and many of the pieces of armor that make their way to recent Scouts are refurbished armor from their fallen predecessors. This further increases the honor of receiving armor "dropped" by a living and fighting elder brother, such armor is considered blessed by the Emperor.
Terminator *: After a Space Marine reaches the age of two hundred years, his growth slows down. They no longer need to change armor plates, and their power armor is marked with more rewards, vows and oaths, becoming unique and richly decorated. Such armor is transferred completely and only after the death of a Space Marine. It is these strengthened and finally “grown up” Space Marines who can receive one of the greatest relics of their Chapter: the mighty armor of the tactical dreadnought.
* In addition to the Space Wolves

Armor Notes: As a Space Marine grows, their armor is replaced with more armor. The armor plates contain spacers between the plates and at the joints, if you make a cut, you can see a kind of "growth ring" on the armor. A Space Marine who is over 240 cm tall and over 300 years old is considered "mature", but most do not live to that age and size. The height of an average Space Marine who is part of a tactical squad ranges from 230 to 240 cm. Most changes in the body of a Space Marine (height, weight, organs) occur during the early stages of his life, during his service as a scout. Hence the "specific" appearance of the armor of the scouts, which combines elements of armor and fabric clothing. Scouts could also use standard power armor, controlling it in the same ways that, for example, the Sisters of Battle use, without using the Black Carapace, but this would not make sense, since the resources of any Order are limited, and scouts die quickly and in huge numbers. quantities.

Armor lining is a highly flexible material, and usually only requires more tension and sometimes additional inserts and fasteners if needed. This means that a Space Marine can use the same padding throughout their entire service.

Terminator honors, armor distribution.

Most Chapters will allow the use of Terminator Armor only to brothers who have proven their martial prowess and faithful service to the Emperor through a long list of victories. Through several centuries of victories and fierce battles with the enemies of the Imperium, a Space Marine has perfected his skills and gained enough fame to claim Terminator honors. The number of sets of this armor is extremely limited. In fact, obtaining the right to wear Terminator armor has very little to do with the age and size of a Space Marine. Due to their limited number, only the "best among equals" will be awarded the Terminator armor. A Space Marine may be awarded the Terminator Cross (a symbol that he has been trained and qualified to wear Terminator armor), but never wear this mighty armor. Because of this, many mature Space Marines continue to wear the power armor they are accustomed to. Thus, any Space Marine will pass the additional test of surviving long enough to receive the weaponry belonging to his older brother, who is destined to die.
This also explains why most Terminator Space Marines are taller and more massive than their counterparts. Terminator Armor works similarly to Power Armor, but due to its greater mass, the Terminator is slower and this is ideal for mature Space Marines who are stronger, but already inferior in agility to their younger brothers.

Physical strength.

It should be noted that although a Space Marine has powerful musculature, his body does not resemble that of a bodybuilder. In previous diagrams, you could look at the skeleton and musculature of a Space Marine. Their muscles and strength are fundamentally different from the effort given out by an athlete-bodybuilder, simply because for his body this is not a natural state, it is corny pumped. Space Marines are more like weightlifters, runners and pentathletes, they have a similar development, although it is obvious that the Space Marine is much larger. Also, in proportions, he is completely different from basketball players - with their skeleton and muscles, they will look like sick dystrophics even next to an ordinary scout.

Agility

To get an idea of the power of a Space Marine, imagine a gorilla. A huge leader gorilla with a silver back and a weight of about 250 kg. A Space Marine weighs about 450 kg. and his legs, torso and chest are larger than those of a gorilla, and his arms are most likely similar. The question involuntarily arises, how will such giants deal with agility and mobility?
Have you ever seen an attacking gorilla? They are frighteningly fast! Moving on four legs, the gorilla will easily overtake an ordinary person and crush any of his attempts to resist! The rhinoceros is quite large, but it can also overtake a person. A Space Marine is able to run faster than any track and field athlete, possessing not only powerful muscles but also striding wider than an ordinary person.

Vulnerability

The Space Marine is very large and fast, great for melee, but not so great for ranged warfare. Using firearms, people are able to kill animals that are much larger and faster than themselves. If humans can kill tigers and mammoths, a space marine shouldn't be a problem either, even our myths glorify those who defeated superior opponents (David and Goliath). The size of a Space Marine, in itself, is not such a threat to experienced warriors, they, of course, can frighten, but only if you yourself do not have weapons and the necessary skills, but a true warrior is more likely to see a “challenge”. I'm sure heroes like Achilles won't be intimidated.

What makes a Space Marine a truly intimidating foe is not just their size, or excellent physique, but their training, equipment, and complementary organs. The equipment is interesting because Space Marines are so big and their arms are so big that it would be difficult for them to maintain and manufacture some of the miniature parts of the armor and weapons they use on their own. That is why the Space Marine Chapters have a huge staff of human, servitors and tech-priests to serve them. Without armor, a Space Marine would be extremely vulnerable to firearms - but, nevertheless, why such a size?

There are two reasons:
First, their strength and size allows them to wear armor so thick that their armor is sufficient to obscure the vast majority of infantry firearms wielded by both humans and xenos. In fact, the Space Marine is invulnerable to enemy infantry. To give you an idea, the Space Marine is covered with armor similar to that of modern armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, but head and shoulders above them in terms of manufacturability and armor protection.

The second is that the speed at which they move, their comparatively small size, and their ability to use cover makes Space Marines difficult targets for weapons powerful enough to pierce power armour. Although in the novels the space marines sometimes attack in open space, through the explosions from the shots of large-caliber guns this is almost unbelievable (dangerous, reckless) and is used by the authors to add more drama to what is happening.

While assaulting enemy bunkers, pillboxes and strongholds, Space Marines will encounter enemy infantrymen's personal weapons and, occasionally, portable weapons. As such, they can be fiendishly swift and "reckless" (by normal human standards) but capture or destroy an enemy headquarters very quickly.

Notes: Interesting relationship between medieval warriors and Terran techno-barbarians; the armor and technology they used allowed them to defend themselves from ranged attacks, and thus the techno-barbarian could be large. Whereas in the galaxy, most people had lost their ancient technology, and therefore lacked power armor, being vulnerable to firearms. Thus, smaller and more inconspicuous warriors survived. Perhaps this is the reason why Space Marines prefer to recruit on worlds similar to those that spawned the Ogryns. The low level of technology development, size, strength and level of mastery of primitive weapons determine whether a warrior and his community will survive or not. In the process of natural selection, only such people remained on such worlds, whose genes are quite capable of going to create a Space Marine.

II: Accurately Known Information

  1. The Horus Heresy Book 1 contains the names of all the primarchs and the names of their legions. Everything in the second line is hidden, but the name of the second primarch is comparable in length to Alpharius, and the name of his legion is slightly shorter than Emperor's Children. The erased legion is also marked Error CDIV (404 error)
  2. The Forsaken Dead says that the Wolves will be unleashed again. From this grows the version that they are involved in the elimination of at least 1 of the unknown primarchs, or even two.
  3. In The First Heretic, it is said that the legion is cleansed and forgotten, and the remnants are poured into the ranks of the Ultramarines.
  4. The cover of one of the audio dramas depicts the Sigillite, and under his right hand he has a skull with the number 2. No, it is very unlikely that this is the skull of a primarch, because in size it is no larger than the head of Malcador. But could the right side be a hidden meaning?
  5. There were statues of all the primarchs on Terra. 9 statues of traitors were covered with a shroud, and the other two lost their faces, were later overthrown. What did 2 unknown primarchs do, compared to what heresy is not so terrible?
  6. In "The Palatine Phoenix", which takes place around the 840s, the Lord of the Second, aka Fulgrim's brother, is still in the ranks. The Phoenix describes him as "usually contemplative, hypocritical and humorless". Which means the Second Primarch is found third.
  7. It follows that during the First Xenocide, this primarch could have died with his legion, and possibly parts of the eleventh (note the Forge words about "Entire Legions")
  8. According to "Wolfsbane"

"I don't think he (Horus) ever liked me, not like some of the others,"
said Russ. "He always respected me, he always knew how to
get the best out of me, but he was jealous from the start. I
was the second found, and when I returned I took the light of
father from him. "
"A problem all eldest sons experience."
"True," said Russ. "When we found our third brother-"
The ship ran through another squall left over from the
Ruinstorm's dissipation. The shaking it experienced sent the
sparse furniture sliding across the stone. The ever danced to
the very edge of the table. Russ" words were drowned out. "-
and we know how tragic that tale was.

The second suffered some kind of tragedy, somehow connected with envy and bad relations between the brothers. Perhaps this was due to his character, which was mentioned earlier.
II: assumptions

  1. In "Vulcan Lives", Manus' spirit tells Vulcan to be stronger. Otherwise, the Salamanders will be forgotten and destroyed in disgrace, and the Nocturne will burn.

» assumptions

Does this mean that one of the unknown primarchs, the version about the Second suggests itself, in the light of the powerful Rangda, dropped his hands and died?

  1. In Fabius Bile: Master of the Clones, it is mentioned that one of the Forgotten men equipped an expedition to the Imga Monolith in the early centuries of the CPSU. Who do we have early (according to the same Reynolds)? That's right, second
XI: definitely known
  1. in "The False Gods", Horus feels that the Eleventh's power will go unclaimed, and then his capsule cracks before being kidnapped.
  2. The Horus Heresy Book 1 contains the Eleventh's closed name comparable in length to Magnus the Red and his legion's name comparable to Thousand Sons. Legion between ZhR and PM marked Censored by Imperial Decree
  3. Eliminated by the Space Wolves.
  4. The First Heretic sheds much light on this enigmatic figure. The 11th Legion is purged and forgotten, the remnants are poured into the Ultramarines. The Eleventh Primarch was described as a calamity for the brethren, and the Word Bearers wanted to destroy him in the past, but did not. Besides, his act offended Lorgar. Given Aurelian's reverence for his father, Eleven might have done something against him.
  5. Under the left hand of the Sigillite is a skull with the number 11. Hidden meaning?
XI: Assumptions
  1. In "Laurie Golding's official order of finding primarchs" the third and nineteenth are marked DELETED. The events of the "First Heretic", at the time of which the 11th committed the atrocity, take place in 966-967M30. Corax is found eighteenth at about the same time. So, N19 - Eleventh (given information about the Second)
  2. ATTENTION! INFORMATION FROM OBSOLETE SOURCES!
"Rogue Trader" called the order of Valedictors (11 characters - at TS 13) one of the first foundations. The Forgiving Ones wore olive armor and drove Chaos and Orcs across the Eastern Reach during the Heresy.
  1. HH7-Inferno:

by the end entire Space Marine Legion s lost to the Imperium.

It was then given to the Space Wolves of the VIth and the Dark Angels of the Ist

In other words, the Rangdan brain-eaters could subdue / desecrate the 11 legion (read excerpts)

  1. "The Horus Heresy, Book 5":

What we foolishly call truth is but a small island in the boundless sea of the unknown. To achieve true prosperity, a person must be ready to completely reject the ever-shrinking island of such petty truth.

Forbidden texts seized from the defunct Legion military lodge [censored]. Attributed to Erebus, First Chaplain of the Word Bearers Legion.
NS is not cut. Did Erebus push the forgotten legion to revolt? Given the order from Golding and the Palatine Phoenix, this could be the Eleventh (which breaks some of the assumptions here). Or a miscalculation of the author?
II/XI: difficult to attribute to a specific primarch/legion

  1. In the background, there are renegade Space Wolves - the Dark Wolves of Skyrar. It is known that a mission fell on them, which pushed them to darkness. Were they not the Eliminators?
  2. There is a Finding of the Lost Son area on the VKP map in Pacificus. But, most likely, this refers to Alpharius.
  3. Events that took place in 965 and 969M30, in which the Space Wolves took part, are marked as<ВСЕ ДАННЫЕ УДАЛЕНЫ>.

» assumptions

From the "First Heretic" we already know that the NA holocaust occurred after the atrocity of the Eleventh - 966-967M30. This means that 11 could be eliminated in 965, and in the same year with the discovery, because there are no crossed out dates before, moreover, about the Night of the Wolf in that chronology is silent, so it can be put as 969

  1. Again, "First Heretic": records of these legions went missing 20 years before the Monarchy. This happened to the Emperor's Children - when their gene-vault was destroyed, they were suspended from the Crusade until a primarch was found. Genetic defects?
  2. Sanguinius tells the Warmaster in The Rise of Horus that he fears the fate of the Legion if the Emperor finds out about the crimson thirst. After all, then the legion will be destroyed. One more point in favor of the version about the flaw in the gene code?
  1. In The Burning of Prospero, it was stated that the exterminatus of the Thousand Sons world was unparalleled in power. Was the burning of two forgotten worlds less shocking?
  2. Titan holds someone whose equals have walked the earth under the living Emperor. And wish this prisoner to get out, he would already be free. Let me remind you that the most dangerous enemies of the Imperium were kept by the Father of Mankind at the Palace in the Khangba Marwu prison. Titan also contained those whom he was afraid to keep next to him.
  3. Magnus is the strongest psyker of the primarchs. 2/11 were weaker or didn't have these abilities at all.
  4. Angron is the only primarch who has achieved nothing on his homeworld. 2/11 something, but achieved.
  5. Malcador considered Mortarion to be the most affected primarch - some got corrupted flesh, others got a soul. Him - and that, and more. 2/11 suffered less.
  6. And again the "First Heretic". Argel Tal was watching 10 pods. At 9 there were traitors, at 1 - El "Johnson (Tzeentch bet on him, it was not for nothing that the Lord of Change tempted him). And there are no unknowns. Not connected with chaos?
  7. "Lightning Tower": the falls of the forgotten were like blackouts, deviations from the norm.
  8. When Sanguinius did not return from Signus for a long time, Malcador considered him dead and almost disbanded the legion. One point for a fallen primarch? It is worth noting that the armory, resources, and even Baal were to be transferred to the needs of the legions loyal to the Emperor. As stated in this work ("Lost Sons", Lost Sons), this has already happened twice.

» assumptions

Those. rumors among the NS may be partly true. And that would explain the origin of the armor of Russ, which is mentioned in XX7-Inferno as having been built to standards unknown to the Imperium.

  1. "The Horus Heresy, Book 3". Alpha Legion section:
a) It is noteworthy that in the case of [redacted] at this stage (implantation of the gene-seed) there was a failure.
b) The [redacted] disaster showed how unwise it is to recruit Legiones Astartes from potentially unclean sources.
c) Participation in Labrick Polaris or a canceled experiment [redacted] has long been the subject of dark rumors.
d) [The Emperor] also did not want to ruthlessly liquidate the unsuccessful experiment, as he did before.
  1. Lorgar, tempted by Ingethel, saw alternate passages of time. In one of them, he killed Sanguinius, was executed by Russ and Curze, and the Legion was threatened with the fate of being destroyed due to a specially designed gene virus. 2/11 could have been subjected to a similar procedure.
  2. And again the "First Heretic". Lorgar considered himself the only one of the brothers who did not want to be a warlord from the word at all. This may mean that the Forgotten Primarchs were not averse to taking up arms.

» assumptions

And if Magnus was drawn to the campaign by the search for knowledge, and Vulcan - by the desire to free people from the yoke of xenos, which was not the last reason for his consent to the Campaign, as it is said in the "Sun of Prometheus", then these two could be attracted by something of their own

  1. In Sons of the Forge, the main action takes place on a planet with a high level of radiation, an unnamed world of the Boron-13 system, where Vulcan's weapons depot is located. Information about what happened once on the planet has been deleted. Why would it suddenly?
  2. There is an interesting point in "Conquest" related to the campaign against the Mitu civilization, in which the Imperial Fists and two other legions took part. What's special, you ask? The fact that none of them, except the Seventh, is described more, despite the meticulousness of other articles in the series, thanks to which one can find out by name third-rate personalities from 142 rows on the right. Of course, these may not be allusions to two erased legions, because one of the casually mentioned may be the Twentieth, a rather dark horse even before reuniting with Alpharius. But what then is another one?
  3. ATTENTION! INFORMATION FROM OBSOLETE SOURCES! Codex: Ultramarines says that 10 legions were on Horus' side at least at the start of the Heresy.

In order to survive in a universe immersed in endless wars, warriors capable of the impossible are needed. In the world of Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Legions became just such fighters-representatives of the race of people. Their bodies are genetically enhanced, the Space Marines carry the best weapons available to mankind, and their experience goes back centuries in endless battles.

Space Marines are superior to ordinary people in many ways. And this is no coincidence. In order to create such a warrior, a long process of genetic and mental changes is required. In addition, they also need to be trained. But the result is worth it. The Space Marines are the epitome of the military power of the Imperium of Man.

The emperor began their creation in the 30th millennium. At that time, it had only just been proclaimed. The fragmented human race could disappear under the onslaught of other civilizations and other races. The plan was very simple. The Emperor, being an immortal superhuman, wanted to use his own gene-seed to create 20 Primarchs. Further, the Space Marine Legions were to be created from their gene-seed. As a result, the most powerful army of Space Marines, led by the Emperor and the Primarchs, was to make the Great Crusade. As a result, the entire galaxy would become part of the Imperium.

Chaos Intervention

The Emperor worked for several hundred years to create the gene-seed of the Primarchs. And by the time they were to join their father, the forces of Chaos intervened. The gods united inflicted a powerful blow. As a result, the Primarchs were scattered and their gene-seed changed.

As it turned out later, each Primarch received a mutation. So Sanguinius became winged, Alpharius was born with a twin brother Omegon, and Magnus the Red grew up one-eyed. But such mutations were not limited to the bodies of the Primarchs. Konrad Curze received the gift of precognition, and according to one version, the Primarch of the 2nd Legion was able to control time.

To one degree or another, these changes subsequently affected Space Marine Legions. Each of the fighters received from the Primarch, from whose gene-seed it was created, and part of the curse of Chaos. So the Blood Angels, led by Sanguinius, were forced to drink blood, and among the Thousand Sons of Magnus there were a huge number of psykers. But this was revealed much later, when the Primarchs were found by the Emperor.

And at that moment, instead of a victorious campaign, the Emperor had to go in search of the Primarchs. Fortunately, their gene-seed was preserved in storage and Space Marine Legions were created. They were called the Legio Astartes. Each fighter was weaker than the Primarch, but in many ways superior to ordinary people. Quality was sacrificed for quantity. Unlike the Primarchs, a legionary could be created in a couple of weeks. As a result, the skeleton, muscles, work of all internal organs and the nervous system completely changed. Fighters became faster, stronger and smarter. True, not everyone could withstand such changes. In the early stages, the mortality among the candidates for the Space Marines was quite high.

The Space Marine Legions were armed with bolter weapons that fired rockets and were clad in power armor that not only protected but also enhanced the abilities of their fighters. The Adeptus Astartes also used the most modern technology for warfare.

In total, 20 Legions were created according to the number of Primarchs. They didn't have names. Only numbers. And their armor was painted grey. Decades later, as the Emperor found the Primarchs one by one, Space Marine Legions passed under their command. The fighters of the Legio Astartes obeyed the Primarch from whose gene-seed they were created.

The Primarchs have grown up on strange worlds that have left their mark on them as well. Rising at the head of their legions, they brought something of their own. In addition, each of the Primarchs gave a name to their Legion and used different colors to decorate the power armor of the fighters. And if the first fighters of the Legions were recruited on Terra - the world-capital of the Imperium, then in the future the Primarchs preferred to recruit replenishment in their home worlds. Depending on the skills of the Primarch and various circumstances, the Legions have changed dramatically. This also affected the quantitative composition. It ranged from 10,000 to 250,000 Space Marines.

In this way, Space Marine Legions became a truly invincible army. Each of the Primarchs occupied their own niche. So, for example, Rogal Dorn became a defense specialist, Magnus the Red became a powerful psyker and sorcerer, and Corvus Corax, Konrad Curze and Alpharius worked from the shadows through espionage, terror and assassination.

But in general, the structure of each Legion has been preserved. At the head was the Primarch and the headquarters of the Legion. Then came the division into Companies, then Battalions, Companies and Detachments. Due to the fact that the number of Legions was not the same and inconsistent, the number of Units could vary greatly.

Success and fall

In the end, the Emperor achieved his goal. All Primarchs have been found and Space Marine Legions started the Great Crusade. Worlds were joining the Imperium one by one, and there seemed to be no power that could stop the Space Marines. Over time, the Emperor retired from command of his army. He appointed Horus as warlord, confident in the loyalty of the Primarchs and Legions. But it was not so.

Horus betrayed his father. He persuaded some of his brothers to support the uprising. Thus began the Black Crusade, during which the Primarchs and their Legions went to war against each other.

At this point, only 18 legions remained, which were divided into 2 camps. The first is the loyalist legions that remained loyal to the Emperor:

  1. 1st - Dark Angels led by Lion El'Jonson
  2. 5th - White Scars led by Jaghatai Khan
  3. 6th - Space Wolves led by Leman Russ
  4. 7th - Imperial Fists led by Rogal Dorn
  5. 9th - Blood Angels led by Sanguinius
  6. 10th - Iron Hands led by Ferrus Manus
  7. 13th - Ultramarines led by Roboute Guilliman
  8. 18th - Salamanders led by Vulcan
  9. 19th - Raven Guard led by Corvus Corax

Confronted them Space Marine Legions sided with Horus and Chaos:

  1. 3rd - Emperor's Children led by Fulgrim
  2. 4th - Iron Warriors led by Perturabo
  3. 8th - Night Lords led by Konrad Curze
  4. 12th - World Eaters led by Angron
  5. 14th - Death Guard led by Mortarion
  6. 15th - Thousand Sons led by Magnus
  7. 16th - The Sons of Horus led, oddly enough, with Horus
  8. 17th - Word Bearers led by Lorgar Aurelian
  9. 20th - Alpha Legion led by Alpharius

What happened to the 2nd and 11th Legions is unknown. All information was destroyed long before the Horus Heresy. But you can collect fragmentary information and unconfirmed rumors. According to them, unlike the other Primarchs, these two, whose names were erased, did not obey the Emperor and openly stood up against his Crusade. What became of the Primarchs and Legionnaires themselves is a mystery. But some believe that the Primarchs were executed by Leman Russ, and the Space Marines of the destroyed Legions became part of the Ultramarines.

But these are just rumors, and in history Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Legions practically destroyed each other and humanity. Only by personal intervention was the Emperor able to change the situation. At the siege of Terra, he fought Horus and destroyed him. But he himself was mortally wounded. After that, the forces of Chaos were driven back, and the surviving Primarchs and Space Marines tried to protect what was left of the Imperium.

So that the history of such betrayal does not repeat itself, Space Marine Legions were disbanded. On their basis, several hundred thousand fighters were created, in which several hundred thousand fighters could no longer be. 1000 is the limit. The Space Marines continued their service, but the Legions were gone. Only 9 Orders adopted their names and traditions. The hunt continued for the legions and Primarchs who had gone over to the side of Chaos. The traitors' names were banned, and their gene-seed was sealed. Thus ended the history of the Space Marine Legions. .

"For debt only ends in death"

The last words of the Dreadnought Vittorio, who stood to the death against the hordes of orcs.

First of all, I want to thank Guard MrOrionto for the review mask and for stimulating me to write mine.

Space Marines(Space Marines) are elite soldiers raised from early childhood. The emissaries of the orders select future paratroopers from among the most physically developed, fast and dexterous children of millions of worlds in the Galaxy. Their innate abilities are developed by increased training, mental suggestion and genetic changes. The culture and organization of the Space Marines are similar to those of the monastics, but many of the characteristics of the various schools of martial arts and martial cultures of all times and peoples can be seen in them.

In keeping with their elite status, the Space Marines are equipped with equipment befitting their superhuman abilities. They wear power armor that gives them ultimate protection and allows them to exist in the most hostile environments, and they are armed with the most powerful weapons, such as the bolter. Space Marines are noticeably taller than the average human - in their power armor, they are, according to various sources, about 230 to 300 centimeters tall.

History of the Space Marine

Primarchs
More than ten thousand years ago, when the Earth was attacked by the gods of Chaos, Emperor there was a plan for the liberation of mankind. Together with researchers, the greatest minds of that time, he revealed the secrets of life and changed it at his own discretion. He created twenty superhumans whose abilities were equal, and sometimes even surpassed his own. Emperor assumed that they would be able to assist him in uniting all mankind into a single empire under his leadership and protection.

But the plan Emperor became known to the gods of Chaos. They learned in Emperor a person equal to them in strength, whom they could not harm in any way. An enemy that won't stop until it destroys them. With these twenty, he would become invulnerable. The Chaos Gods attacked while the superhumans were in their incubation chambers. Emperor established psychic protection around them, but the Chaos Gods were able to destroy it and steal the superhumans from Earth and drag them into space. Fortunately, they were not destroyed by this, but scattered throughout space until they got to the human worlds, where they were adopted by the locals.

Emperor patiently searched for his lost creatures until he found and recruited him into his service. They were to become Primarchs - the patriarchs of the Space Marines. Using the genetic material of the Primarchs, Emperor created implants that distinguished paratroopers from ordinary people. As a result, all Marines had almost all the capabilities inherent in the Primarchs, with the exception that the Primarchs themselves could crush entire armies of Warp demons on their own. Unfortunately, some skills were lost when creating paratroopers - for example, levitation and invisibility.

The Primarchs led the Space Marine Legions to conquer the galaxy and created the Imperium in the form we now know. But the influence of the forces of Chaos continued to affect some of the Primarchs, expressed in eternal fatigue, the desire for personal power, which led them to fall. Rebellion led by Primarch Luna Wolves Legion by the name Horus.

In time Horus Heresy many legions went over to his side. In the terrible war that followed, Primarch against Primarch, Space Marine against Space Marine, Human against Human. The most bloody battle was the battle for possession of the Earth, where Emperor led a decisive assault on Horus' spaceship. The traitor was killed, but one of the greatest Primarchs died with him - Primarch Blood Angels Sanguinius And you Emperor received serious injuries incompatible with life. After victory Emperor was placed in the Golden Throne, supporting his life, where he is to this day. The followers of Horus were banished to a region of space known as Eye of Terror. Of the original twenty Primarchs, only nine survived The Horus Heresy, the rest were killed or went over to the side of the enemy. The primarchs helped Emperor build the Imperium. The gene bank was replenished with their organs to create new Space Marine Chapters. Despite their long lives, the Primarchs were not immortal, the last of them dying after fourteen centuries. There are many legends about their exploits, many of which are kept in the Space Marine Chapters. In our time, the Primarchs are counted among the pantheon of saints, along with Emperor. Their graves are visited by pilgrims, and their relics are sacred.

...After finishing Heresies of the Horus Imperium for quite a long time remained in a state of weakness and devastation. The Traitor Legions were driven into Eye of Terror lick their wounds, but even without the forces of Chaos, the Imperium would be surrounded by enemies who were just waiting for the opportunity to cling to the throat of a defeated lion in order to tear off a fatter piece for themselves. But worse than external enemies was the lack of confidence in the loyalty of friends. The betrayal of the most faithful of the faithful, the Primarchs, who turned their souls to Chaos, instilled fear and uncertainty in the hearts of the people of the Imperium. High Lords Terra, those who took the place of the stasis-immersed Emperor and those who ruled in his name, began their activities with the reorganization of the army and navy, so that the monstrous fire of the Heresy would not happen again. First of all, the entire fleet was subordinated directly to the High Lords, and officers began to be appointed to the positions of admirals only with the unanimous approval of the entire Council of High Lords. All shelves Imperial Guard lost their means of space travel in order to prevent the spread of heresy or rebellion from world to world. legions titans, detachments of huge, god-like, fighting machines, under the command Adeptus Mechanicus Mars, were broken up into small units and dispersed throughout the Imperium. But more than anyone else, the High Lords cared about the fate of the Space Marine Legions. With over a hundred thousand Space Marines, the Legion was a huge force and a huge power for the Primarchs. None of the High Lords dared to question the loyalty of the loyal Primarchs, but they were cautiously told that they were not eternal and who knew what would happen in the future after their death. The Primarchs themselves were also High Lords, and the dispute was about to turn into a conflict that threatened civil strife. Hot and impulsive, Primarch Space Wolves Leman Russ, even threatened to put other lords to death, for the very thought of a possible betrayal of loyal Legions. The dispute was put to an end by the most reasonable of the Primarchs, Roboute Guilliman, Primarch Ultramarines. One day he entered the council chamber and brought with him a large and thick book bound in dark bronze. On the cover, in heavy Imperial Gothic type, was written: Codex Astartes(Index Astartes). This book contained instructions and rules for the new system of organizing troops of paratroopers. Legions were ordered to be divided into small units called Orders. Each Order was ordered to have its own name, its own form of coloring of combat armor, its own fortress-monastery, in which the Order was supposed to store its genetic heritage and educate new members. The size of the Order was limited to a thousand paratroopers, divided into ten companies of ten departments each. The department was divided into two combat divisions of five people each. The huge book contained many other prescriptions and rules for the organization and existence of the Orders. The code regulates weapons and ammunition, equipment and armor, the education of young paratroopers and funeral rituals. Thus, the modern structure of the paratrooper troops was created. Nine loyal Legions were broken into Chapters, and only nine of them retained the names of the former Legions. The rest created their own symbols and colors, and over time, their signs ceased to be surrogates of the former symbols of the Legions and were filled with feeling and meaning. Today, the Space Marines are at the forefront of defense and at the very edge of the Imperium's attacks. A single Space Marine Chapter is capable of holding its own against a vastly outnumbered foe, defending the planets of the Imperium or destroying the armies of entire worlds and even smaller empires with a single attack. Of all the planetary divisions of the Imperium, the Space Marines are the only ones with their own interstellar transport and warships. This allows them to be the Emperor's most mobile and most deadly punishing hand.

The head of each Order is its Master. This is a great hero who went through hundreds of battles and stained his weapons with the blood of thousands and thousands of enemies. Genetically enhanced paratroopers live longer than other people and therefore the Master of the Order is most often his oldest warrior. The names of the Masters of the most powerful and glorious Orders are known throughout the galaxy. Dante, Master of the Order Blood Angels, the oldest of the Space Marines, he is over 1,100 years old, Azrael, Supreme Grand Master of the Order Dark Angels, Old Wolf Logan Grimnar, Supreme Master of the Order Space Wolves, and, of course, Marneus Calgar, Master of the Order Ultramarines, the victor of the Tyranid Hive Fleet Behemoth.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Two more senior officers of the Order stand next to the Master and share with him the hardships of commanding troops on the battlefields. This is the Master Chaplain and Chief Librarian. The Chaplain is the spiritual leader of the Order. He is the guide and chief priest of the Cult. Emperor and Primarch in the Order. Every Marine is a fanatical follower of the Cult Emperor, and each of them, in moments of need, turns to Emperor and to his prophets, Primarchs, with a prayer that they strengthen the will and determination of a warrior in battle. Each of the chaplains of the Order not only helps the religious rites in the Order, but also zealously monitors the purity of the faith and thoughts of his flock. For the chaplains never forget that Chaos has touched each of the Primarchs and its breath is invisibly present in every paratrooper, in everyone who has undergone genetic modification in the image and likeness of the Primarchs. By the power of their faith, their will, and sometimes their weapons, they return the lost to the true path. Librarians are the opposite of chaplains. Librarians are Space Marines with psionic abilities. They are closer than all other people are familiar with Chaos, for the power of the psyker lies in the gift to call upon the power of warp space, which is home to the demons and gods of Chaos. By the power of their will, they put themselves at the service of a force that is hostile to all living things. Librarians can unleash a mighty blow on the enemy with the brute force of the warp, drive demons back into the warp, imbue their swords with powerful energy that makes their blows irresistible and crushing like a hurricane. Despite the fact that the paratroopers are much superior to ordinary people, their armor and weapons further enhance this difference. Paratroopers cannot do without equipment like tanks and ships. The Techmarines oversee this within the Chapters. They, like any other paratrooper, give their allegiance Emperor and the Imperium, but beyond that they are also adherents of the Cult of the Machine-God centered on Mars, a planet in the ancient Earth system. After training in the Chapter's fortress-monastery, the Techmarines set their feet on Mars, where they learn from the Tech-Priests how to oversee the Space Marines' combat vehicles. In battles, Techmarines repair vehicles right on the battlefield, under enemy fire. Like all their brethren, Techmarines are excellent warriors, and their weapons are even more perfect and effective, for in addition to the blessing Emperor their blades bear the favor of the Machine God.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Each of the Orders has its own home world, on which it maintains its own fortress-monastery. It is from this world that the Order's chaplains draw recruits to replenish their ranks. Many Orders are not only placed on the planet, but also help to manage and protect it. For example, Order Ultramarines rules over a small empire of more than a dozen planets centered on the planet Macragge(Macragge). They maintain strict order in their dominions and protect their subjects from intrusions from without and rebellions from within. It is this small empire and himself Macragge became an insurmountable barrier to the Tyranid Hive Fleet Behemoth. Order Blood Angels does not have its own world, and their fortress-monastery soars in the void of interstellar space, making a long journey from star to star. All Blood Angels recruits come from savage nomadic tribes on the planet Baal, which was invaded during the Great Crusade by the winged infant Primarch Blood Angels Sanguinius. On some planets, several Orders recruit their recruits at once, without having a fortress-monastery on it. Such, for example, is the hive world of Necromunda, which is known far beyond the Segmentum Obscurus for its gang wars. Four Orders are recruiting here at once - Imperial Fists, Purple Stars, mourners and Black wings. It was on Necromunda that the captain was born Imperial Fists Lesandro D "Arquebus, who became famous for campaigning with the Inquisitor Jacom Draco and Melinda, an assassin from the Temple of Callidus, into the mysterious and hitherto inaccessible Black Library of the Harlequins of the Laughing God of the Eldar. Each recruit goes through a rigorous selection process before being taken to the fortress-monastery for training and genetic enhancement. The path from a common man to a Space Marine is long and full of difficulties, trials and pain. Not everyone passes it. Those who fail to withstand training or genetic enhancement are, with all due honors, stripped of their memory and turned into servitors, cyborgs in the service of the fortress-monastery. This is also a kind of honor and tribute. Those who pass all the tests become full members of the Order and carriers of genetic enhancers. Each Marine has two hearts, their bones are stronger than alloy steel, their eyes see in the dark and in the fog, and their ears allow you to hear what the wind whispers to the grass on the other side of the waterfall. A Space Marine's ribs are fused into a solid carapace on the chest and sides, carapace capable of withstanding a lasgun blast or a chainsword strike. The strength of the paratroopers is legendary. But genetic enhancement carries a danger. Chaos does not sleep and is always happy to intervene in the genetic manipulations of the Apothecaries, the doctors of the Order. In the records of the Ordo Hereticus, a special Order within the Imperial Inquisition, which is designed to prevent the spread of heresy and mutation in the Imperium, there are references to at least seven cases when the forces of the Imperium, on the orders of the Inquisitors, completely destroyed the Orders, the genetic heritage of which led to insanity their members. Many Orders carry within them the seeds of the touch of Chaos, and each Order fights them to the best of its ability. For example, Order Blood Angels 10,000 years battling the Black Rage and Bloodthirst, diseases that are caused by visions of their Primarch's death Sanguinia at the hands of Horus on his battle barge.

Against all odds, the Space Marines are the most elite part of humanity's defenders. In the entire history of the Imperium, out of more than a thousand Orders, only five have been crossed off the lists. Administratum Imperius due to irreparable losses in battle. This means that every single paratrooper was killed and the fortress-monastery was taken by storm and destroyed by a thousand times superior enemy forces. But even after utter annihilation in combat, or after disappearing into the warp without a trace during an interstellar passage, Marines sometimes return, overcoming the curses of Chaos and death itself. Across the Imperium, tales are told of horrifying ghosts in black power armor studded with bones and skulls drenched in thousands of years of blood, appearing out of nowhere at the most difficult moments for the Imperial Army. Silently they come from the void to spread terror and death among the enemies of the Imperium. They are called the Legion of the Damned.

Space Marine from A to Z

No one knows where they come from, where they disappear, why in battle they are surrounded by silence akin to a grave, and armor and weapons are decorated with symbols of death and fire. Many seers and psykers have had visions of the nature of these warriors. Some said they were former members of the Order of the Firehawks that had disappeared into the warp. Others claimed they were the warriors of the two Space Marine Legions who disappeared during the Great Crusade, and whose records are lost in the depths. Administratum. But nobody knows the truth. Master Chaplain Blood Angels Lemartes are credited with the words spoken by him after he and his Death Company were saved by black warriors from total annihilation by the tyranid hordes on Canopus III: "I have seen their faces. I have seen the faces of my long dead brothers. I have seen the anguish in the eyes of those whose bodies have not found proper burial. And now I know what hell Space Marines go to. And I am glad of it. For now I know that even the darkness of my afterlife will serve the light Emperor" . According to legend, these are the words engraved on his grave.

Creation of a Space Marine

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Space Marine Legions were the vehicle for the creation of the Empire in the early wars, marking it on the galactic map. By the end of the Age of Strife, Earth remained the only independent planet that had only recently freed itself from the volatile warp storms. With the sudden disappearance of these storms, space travel became possible again for earthlings. In two hundred years, Earth's military forces have conquered an Empire that spans half the galaxy. It was the Great Crusade.

The research and development that led to the creation of the Space Marines began in the thirtieth millennium just before the Great Crusade. The work was carried out in laboratories built deep underground. The purpose of the work was to create a caste of perfect soldiers, distinguished by superhuman strength and fanatical devotion. The first of these were used by the Emperor in his conquest of Earth, subduing the various barbarian tribes and rival factions that competed for control of the planet. Later, the Emperor created twenty entities - the Primarchs. It is not known exactly what the Emperor expected from the Primarchs, when they were still babies, the most powerful tornado of Chaos carried them away from the Earth and scattered them across the galaxy. Imperial geneticists continued their research and created the first true Space Marines, while other scientists developed the first power armor and bolters.

During the Great Crusade, the Emperor found the Primarchs, each of whom, thanks to his superhuman build and abilities, occupied a ruling position in the culture in which he fell. It was discovered that the genetic data of the Primarchs could be used to greatly speed up the process of growing the organs and genetic material needed to create the Space Marine Legions. This event is known as the First Founding. Twenty Space Marine Legions were formed, each led by a Primarch, and his genetic data was used to create the soldiers of the Legion he led. After the Primarch Horus rebelled against the Emperor, the Legions were divided into smaller military formations. This event is known as the Second Founding. These formations are called Chapters and are made up of roughly a thousand battle-brothers each.

Gene-seed and zygotes
There are nineteen different genotypes, corresponding to nineteen different superhuman organs surgically implanted into the body of a Space Marine.

Most Orders have been around for thousands of years. During this time, the genotype of some of them has undergone mutations. This entailed changes in the very nature of artificially grown organs. Such changes can sometimes make the implanted organ useless. In other cases, changes in the organ may reduce its effectiveness or cause side effects. But whatever the result, it will be the same for the entire Order - all Space Marines belonging to the Order have implanted organs grown with the same genotype.

As with mutated organs, many Chapters have lost one or two genotypes due to accidents, genetic incompatibilities, or some other reason. Very few Chapters have retained all nineteen implants. However, all possess an implantable shell (stage 19). It is the implantable shell that makes a Space Marine a Space Marine, as opposed to other implants, training, or psycho-surgery.

Implants
Below are nineteen implants created in antiquity by the Emperor's scientists. Each one is very complex and because many implantable organs only work properly when others are present, elimination or mutation of one of the implanted organs can affect the function of the others. For these reasons, implantable organs must be monitored at all times, and many Marines must undergo corrective surgery or chemotherapy to rebalance their metabolism.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Stage 1 - Second Heart

The simplest and most self-sufficient organ. The second heart is able to accelerate the blood supply or maintain all the vital functions of the body, even if the first heart is destroyed. The organ implanted in Stage 1 marines allows them to survive on a planet with a low percentage of oxygen or when seriously injured.

Stage 2 - Ossmodula (Bone modulator)

The organ has the shape of a tube, despite its small size, it has a very complex structure. The bone tissue modulator performs diagnostics and secretes hormones necessary for the formation of the skeleton, as well as so that tissue rejection does not occur. At the same time, specially synthesized hormones increase the ability of developing bones to absorb silicon, which is contained in large quantities, in the preparations included in the paratrooper's diet. Within two years after implantation, the femur bones are significantly strengthened, the chest becomes extremely ossified (this is caused by the growth of ribs that form a continuous mass of intertwined bone plates), and there is an increase in the skeleton of the paratrooper as a whole.

Stage 3 - Biskopea

This small, almost spherical organ is implanted in the chest cavity and, like the Bone Modulator, its job is to secrete hormones. The presence of biscopea stimulates the growth of muscle tissues throughout the body.

Stage 4 - Gemastamen

This tiny organ is implanted in the aorta. Gemastamen has two purposes. It performs diagnostics and to some extent controls the organs implanted in Stages 2 and 3. The organ also changes the composition of the paratrooper's blood. As a result, the blood supplies the body with oxygen more efficiently, which is necessary for the additional biological equipment that the paratrooper carries!

Stage 5 - Larraman Organ

The size of a golf ball, this dark fleshy liver-like organ is implanted in the chest cavity and connected to a variety of blood vessels. The organ produces and contains the so-called "Larraman bodies". If a paratrooper is wounded, these bodies are released into the blood. They cling to leukocytes and are transported by them to the wound. Coming into contact with air, Larraman's bodies form a strong film that replaces the skin and stops bleeding.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Stage 6 - Cataleptic knot

This brain implant is usually inserted into the base of the skull through a hole drilled into the cranial bone. The pea-sized organ influences circadian sleep patterns and the body's response to its absence. Usually, a paratrooper sleeps the same amount as a normal person, but if he is unable to sleep, then the cataleptic node turns on. A person with such an implant is able to sleep and remain awake at the same time, which is achieved by successively "turning off" various areas of the brain. This cannot replace normal sleep, but it increases the Marine's survivability by allowing him to stay alert while resting.

Stage 7 - Preomnor

The preomnor is a large organ implanted into the chest cavity. The organ is a pre-stomach, allowing the Marine to ingest many poisonous or inedible substances. In fact, no digestion occurs in the preomnor. Separate sensory tubes let in possible poisons and neutralize them or, if necessary, isolate the preomnor from the gastrointestinal tract.

Stage 8 - Omophagy

This is a very complex implant. It is, in fact, part of the brain, although it is located in the spinal cord between the occipital and thoracic vertebrae. Four nerve sheaths called neuroclea are implanted between the spine and the wall of the pregastric. Omophagy absorbs genetic data contained in animal tissues, such as memory functions, accumulated experience and innate abilities. This gives the paratrooper the ability of extraordinary survivability. He can learn by eating. If a Marine eats a piece of an animal, he gains some of the animal's memories. This can be very useful in a foreign environment. Coincidentally, the presence of this organ gave rise to the various flesh-eating and blood-drinking rituals for which certain Orders gained their fame, as well as giving names to such Orders as Blood Drinkers, Flesh Tearers, etc.

Stage 9 - Extra lung

This is another very large implant. The accessory lung or "third lung" is cylindrical and gray in color. Blood passes through the organ through connecting vessels implanted in the paratrooper's pulmonary system. Air enters the trachea through the sphincter. In toxic atmospheres, the sphincter closes the trachea and stops normal breathing, protecting the lungs. The extra lung is able to release oxygen from a weakly oxygenated or poisonous atmosphere. And most importantly, no harm is done to the extra lung, thanks to its effective systems for neutralizing toxins and regeneration.

Stage 10 - Occulob

This small organ is shaped like a snail and is located at the base of the brain. It provides hormonal and genetic stimuli to allow the Marine's eyes to respond to optical therapy. The occulob does not improve the Marine's vision, but allows technicians to make additions to the growing retina and its light receptors. An adult paratrooper has much better eyesight than an ordinary person, and can see in semi-darkness almost as well as in daylight.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Stage 11 - Lyman's Ear

This organ allows the paratrooper to deliberately amplify or filter out various background noises. Hearing is improved, and the paratrooper cannot have bouts of nausea, and cannot feel dizzy due to severe disorientation. Liman's ear is outwardly indistinguishable from a normal human ear.

Stage 12 - Pri-en Membrane

This flat, rounded organ is implanted directly on top of the exposed brain. Then it begins to grow into the brain tissue until it becomes one with them. This organ is useless without subsequent chemotherapy and special training. However, a specially trained paratrooper can enter a state of temporary stasis (pri-an membrane - membrane of suspended animation - ed.). This can be a conscious action, or it can happen automatically if the Marine is seriously injured. In this state, the paratrooper can be for many years, even when receiving wounds, otherwise fatal. Only with appropriate chemotherapy and hypnosis sessions can a paratrooper get out of this state - he cannot get out of it himself. Brother Silas Err of the Order of the Dark Angels was in stasis for 567 years before being brought out of it, the longest period of stasis with a successful return so far recorded (file 321 M.37).

Stage 13 - Melanochrome or melanochrome organ

This black organ has the shape of a hemisphere. The organ monitors the external level of radiation, various types of radiation and, if necessary, triggers chemical reactions that darken the skin to protect it from ultraviolet radiation. It also provides some protection from other forms of radiation. Differences in the melanochrome genotype from Chapter to Chapter have resulted in differences in the hair and skin color of Marines, and in some Chapters all Marines have the same appearance, such as the albino warriors of the Order of Phantoms of Death.

Stage 14 - Oolitic bud

This reddish-brown organ is shaped like a heart and enhances the Marine's circulatory system, allowing other implants to work more efficiently. The oolitic kidney cleanses the blood very quickly and efficiently. The second heart and oolitic kidney can work together to perform an emergency detox during which the paratrooper is rendered unconscious. At this moment, the blood circulates through the veins at a very high speed, passing through the oolitic kidney. This allows the Marine to survive ingesting poisonous and poisonous gases that even an extra lung cannot handle.

Stage 15 - Neuroglotis

Although the preomnor protects the marine from eating anything deadly, the neuroglotis allows him to test the contents of the food by tasting it. This organ is implanted in the sky. When chewing food or simply taking a bite, a paratrooper can smell a large amount of natural poisons, chemicals, and even the characteristic aromas of some animals. To some extent, the Marine can also track down a target, relying solely on his taste abilities.

Stage 16 - Mucranoid

This small organ is implanted in the intestine, where its hormonal secretions are absorbed by the large intestine. These secretions begin to change the sweat glands. These changes usually do not affect the Marine in any way until they are activated by special chemotherapy. As a result, the Marine begins to sweat an oily cleansing substance that envelops the skin. This protects the paratrooper from extreme temperatures and provides him with little protection in a vacuum. Mucranoid chemotherapy is a standard procedure in long-term space travel and vacuum combat.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Stage 17 - Batcher's Iron

A pair of identical glands are implanted in the lower lip next to the salivary glands or in the jaw itself. The Betcher's gland works in exactly the same way as the venom gland in snakes, synthesizing and storing deadly venom. The gland allows the Marine to spit blinding contact poison. Due to the presence of the gland, the paratrooper himself is immune to this poison. Among other things, the poison also has corrosive properties. A paratrooper captured and thrown behind bars can literally “gnaw through” his way to salvation in a few hours.

Stage 18 - Progenoids (Protogenous glands)

There are two such glands. One is in the neck and the other is deep in the chest cavity. These glands are very important for the survival of the entire Order. Each of them grows inside the Marine, collecting hormonal secretions and genetic material from other implants. In the fifth year, the cervical gland matures and is ready for removal. In the tenth year, the mammary gland matures and also becomes ready for removal. The gland may be removed at any time after it has matured. These glands are the only source of the Order's genotypes. Having matured, each one stores in itself one genotype of each zygote implanted in the paratrooper. After surgical removal, each of the progenoid glands must be carefully prepared, the genotypes stored in it checked for mutations, and only completely healthy ones are saved. Under certain storage conditions, selected genotypes can be kept indefinitely.

Stage 19 - Carapace

This is the last and most important implant. In the tanks where it is grown, it looks like a film of black plastic. This film is removed from the living environment, cut into sheets, which are implanted directly under the skin in the paratrooper's torso. Within a few hours, the implanted sheets harden and send many nerve endings inside the paratrooper. After a few months, the shell is fully formed, and nerve sensors and transmitting sensors are inserted into it. These artificial connection points connect to power armor. Without a black carapace, a paratrooper's armor is completely useless.

Differences between Orders
Each organ has its own specific function, as outlined above, and while the Order's Apothecaries and Surgeons can perform the necessary procedures for implantation, they often do not understand the precise purpose of each organ.

The processes used are very ancient. The procedures were passed down from generation to generation, becoming more and more ritualistic and incomprehensible. Because of this, the effectiveness of each body varies from Order to Order. It all depends on the state of the Order's genotype and the level of degradation of surgical procedures. In some Orders, genotype mutations, poor surgical procedures, and inappropriate postoperative conditions have altered the function of some implants. For example, the omophagy genotype of the Bloodsuckers has mutated so that all paratroopers of this Order experience a monstrous thirst for blood. In other Orders, individual organs have either lost all their functions long ago, or are absent altogether.

Reproduction of zygotes
The genotype can only be obtained from the progenoid implants of a living (or freshly deceased) Marine. For this purpose, Marine Apothecaries carry a special device called the Reducer, which they use in the field to extract progenoids from a slain Marine. The purpose of progenoid implants is to provide the Order with genotypes. There is no other way to get zygotes. Therefore, the set of genotypes of each Order is unique. The genotype is of great religious significance to the Order, representing its future. Without a genotype, the Order has no future. The disappearance of any genotype means that the corresponding zygote is irretrievably lost. The disappearance of the Stage 18 or 19 genotypes most likely means the end of the Order.

Since each Marine only has two progenoid glands, the rate at which the Order can recruit new Marines is strictly fixed. It may take many years for the Order to recover from heavy losses. The genotype often becomes unusable if the Marine is exposed to intense radiation or other genetic exposure. Progenoids also differ between different Orders, so some Orders recover faster than others.

Founding of new Orders
By charter, each Order is required to send 5% of its genotype to the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars. This tribute has two purposes. First, it allows the Adeptus Mechanicus to oversee the vitality and well-being of each Chapter. Secondly, it provides the Adeptus Mechanicus with the genotype needed to create new Chapters.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

A new Order cannot be created overnight. An appropriate genotype must be selected for each zygote. After that, the zygotes are grown in a favorable biological environment, and then implanted into human slaves. These slaves must not have any mutations and be biologically compatible with the zygotes. Slaves spend their lives in stationary experimental pods. Although conscious, they are completely immobilized and serve only as shells for the development of various zygotes. From the first slave, two progenoids are obtained, which are already implanted into two slaves, from which four progenoids are obtained, and so on. It takes about 55 years of continuous reproduction of organs to create a thousand healthy sets of organs. This process must be sanctioned by the Head of the Adeptus Mechanicus and then by the High Lords of Terra, speaking in the name of the Emperor. Only the Emperor can give permission for the creation of a new Order.

Replenishment and dedication
Implants greatly change the physical and mental state of the paratrooper. Many of these changes are caused by hormonal secretions and growing organs. Implants may not function at all or be ineffective at all if they are implanted in a paratrooper who has reached a certain age. It is vital, therefore, that recruits be young enough. Tissue compatibility is also very important, otherwise the organs will not be able to develop properly.

The third point is psychological fitness. The cataleptic knot, the occulob, and the pri-an membrane will only be brought into working condition by stimulating mental processing, so the recruit must be susceptible to this kind of exposure.

Only a very small proportion of people meet these conditions and are able to become Space Marines. They must be male because zygotes are tied to male hormones and tissue types, hence the need for tissue compatibility and psychological evaluation. If the result of all tests is positive, then the candidate becomes a neophyte. After organ implantation, appropriate chemical and hypnotic treatment, he becomes an initiate. Before joining the ranks of full-fledged paratrooper brothers, the initiate undergoes serious training. Normally, initiates become full-fledged Marines between the ages of 16 and 18, but by this time, due to the hormonal changes brought about by the processes of creating a Space Marine, they are already fully grown and physically mature. And wartime stresses can accelerate these processes as well.

Danger

Although the Orders carefully select only suitable candidates, not all neophytes survive to become initiates. This is partly due to the decline of knowledge, which makes pain-relieving procedures less effective than they used to be, and surgery is completely unsatisfactory. In many Orders, surgical operations are highly ritualized and very often accompanied by incantations, prayers, occasional fasting, and all sorts of mystical rites that take the place of medicine. For example, the organ implanted into the Space Wolves at stage 17 has been mutated so that their incisors continue to grow throughout their lives, turning into predatory fangs after several centuries. Long fangs are not only a traditional attribute of the Order, but also play a role in its organization, as an example, veterans of units with heavy weapons are called Long fangs.

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Another Chapter that has rumored genotype traits is the Blood Angels. They often fall into a state known as the Black Rage and become berserk warriors, thirsting for the blood and raw flesh of their enemy. The Blood Angels are constantly looking for a way to get rid of this curse - the Curse of Sanguinius. But at the same time, the Death Companies, drawn from such paratroopers, are very valuable attack units that are almost immune to pain and are able to tear the enemy apart with their bare hands.

Another good example of genotype deterioration can be found in the Order of the Black Dragons, whose bone tissue modulator is not functioning properly. Which leads to the appearance of bone growths on the head, as well as blade-like processes from the shoulder and forearm. Both the Blood Angels' Death Companies and similarly developed Marines are formed into a separate unit known as the Dragonclaws. They sharpen their extra protrusions and coat them with adamantium, turning them into deadly melee weapons.

If the implant fails to develop properly, the Marine's metabolism will go out of sync. He can fall into a state of catatonia, or vice versa hyperactivity. Either way, he will probably die.

Losers who survive almost invariably suffer mental cataclysms, degenerating into maniacs or gibbering idiots. When the Order is at full strength, such unfortunates are relieved of their suffering. However, if the Order experiences a shortage of paratroopers, then these losers are often allowed to live, and even special units are formed from them. Those who show uncontrollable manic tendencies are rounded up in suicide assault teams.

Some Orders deliberately prepare such creatures, and even go so far as to implant damaged zygotes into some initiates. This is very dangerous, and the practice is discouraged by an Imperial decree. But old traditions die hard.

Physical training

stimulates the development of implants and allows you to test them for effectiveness.

mental processing

A paratrooper is more than a man with extraordinary abilities. Marines also have outstanding mental abilities. Along with the body receiving 19 implants, their minds are altered, releasing the powers hidden within. These are primarily mental abilities, more extraordinary than even the physical features described earlier. For example, a paratrooper can control his senses and nervous system to the highest degree, and therefore endure pain that would kill an ordinary person. The Marine can think and react at lightning speed. Memory training is also an important part of mental processing.

Some paratroopers develop photographic memory. Obviously, Marines vary in intelligence just like other people, and their individual mental abilities also differ.

Thus, some of the best warriors of the Imperium are born, an adamantium link in the armor of the Imperium.

Psycho-chemical and other conditions

Implantation takes place along with chemical treatment, the creation of certain psychological conditions and subconscious hypnotherapy. All these conditions are essential if the paratrooper develops properly.

Chemical processing

Prior to initiation, a Marine is subjected to constant testing and training. The implanted organs must be checked very carefully, the imbalance corrected, and any sign of tainted development eliminated. This chemical processing is reduced after the completion of the initiation process, but never stops completely. To maintain a stable metabolism, paratroopers undergo periodic chemotherapy throughout their lives. That's why their power armor contains medical diagnostic equipment and a drug preparation module.

Hypnotherapy

As the super-enhanced body grows, the paratrooper must learn to use his new skills. Some of the implants, especially the Stage 6 and 10 implants, can only function if the correct hypnotherapy is applied. Hypnotherapy is not always as effective as chemical treatments, but it can produce significant results. If a paratrooper is taught to control his own metabolism, then his dependence on drugs will decrease. The procedure is performed in a machine called a hypnomat. Marines are placed in a state of hypnosis and subjected to visual and auditory processing to awaken their minds to subconscious metabolic control.

Space Marine units and vehicles:

Techmarine

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Trained by the Adeptus Mechanicus in the arcane rites of the machines, Techmarines are essential to the survival of any Space Marine Chapter. It is they who look after the spirits of the weapons and equipment of the Order, and also keep the technological secrets that bind man and machine together, turning him into an instrument of the Emperor's wrath. Deep within the machine temples, they craft weapons and armor for their battle-brothers with great skill and reverence.

Techmarines use a wide variety of arcane equipment and tools not normally available to other brethren. Many Techmarines are equipped with a servo-arm, a specialized secondary arm connected to the Techmarine's armor and linked to his nervous system. These arms can be equipped with laser cutters, power saws, energy drills, or other arcane tools to help the Techmarine maintain and repair vehicles on the battlefield. Their gloves are also often heavily modified to include more delicate tools or even certain forms of mechadendrites. Many Techmarines remove the organic components of their arms and replace them with reinforced prosthetics that allow for better communication with any machine they serve, some even go further and implement mechanical interfaces that allow the Techmarine to communicate directly with the machine spirit.

Out of respect for their training on Mars and the close bond that exists between Techmarines and the Adeptus Mechanicus, Techmarines traditionally repaint their armor red, although one pauldron always retains the original colors of the Chapter.

Techmarines understand better than anyone the potential risk of angering the spirit of battle gear, and diligently ensure that the symbol of the Chapter remains clean and unobscured. Although the Iron Priests of the Space Wolves, despite their training on Mars, fiercely display their independence, always retaining the original color of the armor.

Scouts

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Each Space Marine Chapter must recruit new warriors to make up for its losses and maintain combat readiness. The process of recruiting may vary depending on the Order, but, nevertheless, in general, it is the same. Regardless of the traditions of the Order, the recruit must be young, as at an early age the rejection rate of implants that turn an ordinary person into a Space Marine is quite low. However, implantation is only the beginning of a long-term process of genetic change, during which a normal person turns into a full-fledged Space Marine. During these years, the recruit serves as a Space Marine scout. He is already a Space Marine, but not much different from a human yet.

A scout has to learn a lot during his service. He must not only become accustomed to the many biogenetic changes brought to his body, but also comprehend the litanies of battle that will give him strength and strengthen his will. Gradually, the recruit will comprehend the rites of his Order and learn the most efficient use of weapons, on which his life in battle will depend. But he will gain the most important skills and experience by participating in battle for the first time. Scouts are not as durable or as experienced as Space Marines.

However, they can be used during the most important battles along with the Space Marines and this is not such a rarity. Indeed, each Order has its own stories of brave Scouts who were forced to go to the front lines in critical situations. However, Scouts are usually used as light infantry. Their duty is to sneak into enemy positions or act as scouts ahead of the main body. If they conduct an operation in enemy territory, their task is to set traps for the unwary enemy, observe the movement of the enemy and collect as much information as possible about his plans. They can also infiltrate the enemy base and capture the commander for information or sabotage equipment, ammunition, food supplies. Striking quickly and brutally, the Scouts fulfill their mission and disappear before the enemy can strike back.

If a candidate enters the ranks of recruits, he must pass a test, the essence of which varies from Order to Order, as soon as he passes it, the process of implantation begins. Thus, he takes his first steps towards becoming a full-fledged Space Marine. A scout is placed under the command of a sergeant, who oversees his development and training, and also leads a troop of scouts into battle. Since the Scouts are not yet ready to act on their own, they join one of the companies. They live in the location of the Tenth Company. Here they eat, sleep, train, and learn the legends of their Order. Only when a scout has proven his worth in combat does the sergeant award him the rank of Space Marine and thereby declare him ready to transfer to another company.

tactical squad

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Tactical squads are the backbone of a Space Marine army. They are designed to fulfill all the roles that the battlefield dictates to them; they hold positions, provide fire support, or throw themselves into the bloody frenzy of close combat, as the ever-changing theater of war requires.

A Space Marine assigned to a Tactical Squad must, above all else, be competent in all aspects of warfare. As such, a Marine must serve in several campaigns with both the Assault Squad and the Ravager Squad before earning a permanent position in the Tactical Squad. This promotion must be blood-earned and may take years or even decades, depending on the skills of the candidate in question. Not every Space Marine manages to make such a transition. Many display a talent or an obsession in one aspect of combat that is valuable in its own way, but has become a hindrance to the Tactical Squad's adaptive role. Other Battle-Brothers lack the mental flexibility to accept the fluidity of the Tactical Squad's role.

As befits such versatility, the Tactical Squad uses all sorts of weapons. In addition to the standard Space Marine weaponry of the bolt pistol and grenades, the Tactical Squad uses bolters, vicious weapons of vengeance made famous on countless millions of blood-soaked battlefields.

This massive anti-personnel firepower is complemented by heavy weaponry such as a rocket launcher, lascannon, or heavy bolter, and in some cases, a flamethrower or meltagun. Since these weapons are chosen to meet the requirements of each drop, and also move between all squad members except the sergeant, each Space Marine in a Tactical Squad must be trained and proficient with whatever weapon their squad goes into combat with.

Of all the Space Marine combat units, the Tactical Squad makes the most of the vehicle fleet, often delivering surgically precise strikes or capturing strategic points with swift Cleavers or Rhinos. Some Chapters - most notably the Angels of Fury, the Raven Guard, and the Night Legion - have changed their combat doctrine to accommodate this tactic. Each tactical squad is led by a grey-haired sergeant who has survived and thrived on several decades or even centuries of hard and brutal campaigns. It is imperative that the Tactical Squad be led by a shrewd and courageous individual who can see the right moment in the course of a battle, and it is not unusual for a Tactical Squad sergeant to be seconded from the elite First Company. This ensures that the backbone of the Order's fighting forces is led by its most experienced warriors.

Assault Squad

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Assault Squads excel in face-to-face combat. Equipped with jump packs, armed with bolt pistols and chainswords, they roar across the battlefield like angels of vengeance, charging at the enemy with little regard for the dangers that threaten them. Typically, a Space Marine is assigned to an Assault Squad after exemplary service with the Ravagers. By this time he has gained combat experience in the crucible of war and can be counted on to hold his own in the face of the enemy. Now he must harden himself in the most brutal arenas of war, prove his worth in the melee of close combat, face to face with the enemy, close enough to smell his blood.

The Codex Astartes mandates Assault Squads to march in the first attack wave, delivering irresistible strikes against the weak points of enemy battle formations. Opposing infantry are destroyed with chainswords and bolt pistols, enemy tanks with HEAT grats and melta bombs. To land an irresistible and irresistible blow at a certain point, crush the enemy without mercy and then move on to the next target, such is the tactic of Assault Squad Space Marines. Such tactics are inelegant, but very effective. The enemy who tries to test the limit of the power of the Assault Squad will be sadly mistaken.

The jump pack is as dangerous as any other weapon carried by a Space Marine in this squad. Jump Packs give the Assault Squad mobility, allowing them to cross any terrain quickly and unhindered, or even drop from a low-flying Thunderhawk gunship. In the hands of a skilled commander, an assault squad is an excellent weapon. Assault Marines can drop unexpectedly into an enemy warlord convinced he is safe among his troops, serve as a highly mobile counterattack unit, or perform vital reconnaissance in war zones unsuitable for Scout deployment. In certain circumstances, the Assault Squad is used as bait, luring enemy forces into prepared defensive positions, or pulling them aside to buy time to complete preparations or evacuation.

The most bloody and dangerous tasks fall to the share of the assault squad. Often operating far ahead of the rest of the army, Assault Squad Space Marines are constantly under the threat of flanking, encirclement, or simply outnumbering the enemy. To avoid this, the Assault Sergeant Commander has direct access to gigantic data streams and tactical charts, commanding and controlling the messages by which Space Marines coordinate their deployment and combat operations. The sergeant of the Assault Squad, even if he now fights for his life knee-deep in corpses, must not only be aware of the current situation, but also anticipate any further or possible development of events that threatens to put his squad in distress, surrounded and scattered in a sea of bloodthirsty enemies. If that were to happen, only indomitable might and iron will would enable the Assault Squad Space Marines to cut their way through the foe and achieve victory.

Devastator Squad

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Ravagers are the most heavily armed of all Space Marine squads, trained to attack the enemy from great distances and with monstrous firepower. Primarily playing a fire support role, Devastators provide cover fire for Tactical and Assault Squads, quickly and ruthlessly destroying their counterparts in the ranks of the enemy or enemy armored vehicles and other heavily armored targets.

Unlike other Space Marine squads, the Ravagers operate without leaving their positions, except to advance, retreat, or take a better position. This is not to say that the Ravagers cannot be flexible on the battlefield, as each squad is assigned a Rhino armored personnel carrier specifically for such movements. However, it is no doubt true that Ravager squads are almost always assigned to holding positions, as they provide destruction from a greater distance and with greater firepower than other battle-brothers.

Most Ravager squads are made up of Space Marines who have only recently completed their service to the Order in Scout squads. Although they have taken part in dozens - perhaps hundreds - of operations as rookie paratroopers, serving in the Ravager squad will not only be their first experience of fighting in power armor, but will also mark their first combat as part of the main force. space marines.

Newly assigned to the Devastator squad, the Space Marine is equipped with a bolter and grenades, which he will train to be superb during his service. Its main tasks are to provide fire support at short distances, identify targets and general scheme of operations as support for more experienced brother paratroopers carrying heavy squad weapons. Only when a newcomer proves himself to be a steadfast and reliable warrior, able to hold the target faithfully and remain cool in the heart of the battle, he is entrusted with heavy weapons from the Order's arsenal. Devastator squads most often carry four types of heavy weapons in battle. Equipment ranges from the common heavy bolter and rocket launcher to the more exotic multi-melts and plasma cannons. The preferred heavy weapons scheme for a Ravager squad differs from squad to squad and Chapter to Chapter, although all members must be well trained in handling any weapon of war they may be called upon to carry.

Most Space Marine Chapters equip their Ravagers with a variety of weaponry, as prescribed by the Codex Astartes. This allows them to better cope with any, even the most unexpected, threats. A single squad of Devastators can play a variety of roles on the battlefield by simply splitting into anti-tank and anti-personnel groups. Even so, some Space Marine Chapters have redefined the role of their Devastator Squads, reducing it to opposing a specific type of foe. For example, the Crimson Fists, whose tactics naturally changed due to the almost complete destruction of "Waaah!" Snagrod tend to provide a hail of anti-personnel rounds offered by a four heavy bolter pattern. Whereas the Salamanders and Imperial Fists use their Ravagers equipped with multi-melts and lascannons to smash through the monstrously thick armor of enemy tanks and fortifications.

Apothecaries

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

For every Space Marine Chapter, having a future means carefully guarding and preserving the organic implants intended for initiation into a Space Marine. The genetic history of the Chapter is carefully traced and recorded to avoid bias and to ensure that the healthiest gene-seed is used to create the next Space Marine. Each Space Marine carries two reproductive organs called Progenoid Glands. Throughout a Space Marine's lifetime, they collect and store material from the Marine's other implanted organs for later retrieval. If a Space Marine dies, the Progenoids can be extracted and used to grow new implants. Thus, even in death, a Space Marine gives life to his Chapter. It is the Apothecaries who have the most important task of preserving the genetic purity of the Order and extracting the Progenoid glands of fallen battle-brothers.

Whenever the Order goes into battle, the Apothecaries go with them. They are formidable warriors in their own right, their sacred destiny at the heart of battle, and to defend themselves in the line of duty. Once a Space Marine falls, the Apothecary will take care of him. Apothecaries are skilled medics, and are equipped with a wide array of tools, such as the reducer and narthecium, among others. Narthecium is a largely automated device equipped with sensors, probes, narcotics and drugs. With it, the Apothecary can perform surgical operations in combat conditions with a good chance of success, which relies, among other things, on the superhuman durability of a Space Marine. If all the efforts of the Apothecary to save the fallen comrade are in vain, in order to alleviate his suffering, he will bring him the Emperor's Mercy, after which, using the reducer, he will extract the warrior's Progenoid glands so that he continues to live thanks to the creation of a new Space Marine.

Librarian

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Librarians of the Space Marine Chapters are powerful mystic warriors, the embodiment of spirituality, possessing tremendous energy of crushing power. They are an integral part of the Adeptus Astartes, consummate warriors who use their enhanced psychic abilities, wisdom and knowledge to act as soothsayers and provide telepathic communication between Space Marine Chapters. But such power comes at a price, so only those with great willpower are able to withstand the pernicious influence of psychic dangers and become Librarians. For every trained psyker, there are many psykers who lack the power of their own to defend against the eternal curse of Chaos. Among those psykers powerful enough to fully control their powers, the most trained and powerful are the Librarians of the Adeptus Astartes.

Chaplain

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine Chaplains are the spiritual leaders of the Adeptus Astartes. In battle, Chaplains fight alongside fellow Space Marines, singing liturgies and inspiring warriors to great deeds. Clad in black ceramite powered armor with skull-shaped masks, Chaplains evoke terror and fear by their very appearance. Appearing in the hottest spots of the battlefield, they inspire ordinary paratroopers with their faith and fury. They always go ahead, believing that the war in the name of the Emperor is the best proof of serving him. As they fight, Chaplains destroy their enemies with joy and jubilation, offering prayers to the Emperor and the founder of the Order.

Space Marine Chaplains are important members of the Chapter, and are respected by their fellow Marines. Their life is closely connected with the life of the entire Order. They oversee the training of every Space Marine from an early age. They are the first to meet young recruits who join the Order as neophytes and guide them in their training in basic doctrines and rules. Chaplains teach newcomers the Order's cult beliefs, and ensure that recruits memorize all the necessary hymns and liturgies. Chaplains are known for their strictness and irascibility, however, they undoubtedly have a high sense of duty and responsibility for the rest of their fellow paratroopers. In battle, they fight with sacred inspiration and passion, without ceasing, however, to vigilantly monitor the state of mind of their combat comrades.

As already mentioned, Chaplains are the spiritual leaders of the Chapters, who ensure that Space Marines fulfill their oath of service to the Order with honor. They offer praise to the Emperor and Primarch for their own existence and the creation of the Adeptus Astartes as such, although the manner of such praise may vary from Chapter to Chapter. All Marines revere the Emperor as their own creator and savior of mankind, but virtually all Chapters regard him as nothing more than a powerful and great man. However, some Chapters even consider their own Primarchs to be gods or demigods. The rest of the Chapters, however, refer to the Primarchs as superior, albeit mortal, beings, mighty heroes of a time long past.

The central shrine, in which prayers are offered and rituals are performed, is called the Reclusium and is located within the fortress-monastery of the Order. This temple is a place of cultural and spiritual unity. This sacred place contains ancient artifacts and relics. Often, fragments of the Primarch's armor and items of combat equipment of the heroes of the Order are stored in the temples. On the walls hang the standards of companies and Orders. Chaplains hold services in the Reclusium, raising the morale of the Space Marines with passionate sermons. Battle barges and ships have special lecterns that serve the same purpose. In such armored quarters, paratroopers can perform the necessary rites and offer prayers when they are away from the fortress-monastery of their Order. In addition, the warriors of most of the Chapters are scattered throughout the galaxy, fighting in numerous campaigns that can last for several hundred years. However, it should be noted that the very presence of a chaplain already inspires warriors to exploits, so the presence of a formal chapel on the ship is not necessary. Chaplains always accompany brother-marines on crusades, providing spiritual guidance to warriors wherever they are. And wherever a Chaplain is, in the Reclusium, aboard a spaceship, or in the thick of battle, he is always ready to offer the right prayer and perform any proper ritual.

Holy Dreadnought

At the forefront of the Space Marine attacks are the Dreadnoughts, mighty machines that strike fear into all enemies of the Imperium. On the battlefield, they are the very embodiment of death, smashing the enemy with energy fists and shooting him with powerful weapons. There are only a few opponents in the galaxy who can adequately resist these terrible machines.

The height of the dreadnoughts is three human heights. Among all the war machines that fight on the battlefields of the 41st millennium, they are the most ancient. Some Dreadnoughts are even close to ten thousand years old, dating back to the time of the Great Crusade, when the Emperor was still among the common people. The art of making dreadnoughts has long been lost. The sorcerous technology required for this miraculous rebirth has been transformed into mythical rituals, and each dreadnought of the Order has acquired the status of a precious relic. Dreadnoughts are the living embodiment of the Machine God, reflecting the final fusion of biology and mechanics into a coherent whole. The memories of pilots in Dreadnought skins typically span several thousand years, and as such, these elder warriors are a link to the Chapter's past legacy.

The biological component present in the dreadnought is not physically human. This is one of the Elders, a mighty hero, a space marine who received mortal wounds during the battle and was honored to be placed in an armored dreadnought sarcophagus. The burial of the eldest brother is followed by a lengthy ritual involving his fellow Marines, Techmarines and Chapter Apothecaries. It is the greatest honor for a Space Marine to be able to transform into a Dreadnought, which is why these veteran warriors are held in high esteem among regular Marines. The Elder's remains are immersed in amniotic fluid and surgically placed inside an armored sarcophagus, where mechanical sensors allow him to receive information about the world around him. Thus, he is able to fight for the Emperor for many more centuries, never leaving his metal body until his death.

In combat, Dreadnoughts are formidable foes, charging inexorably against their opponents under the hail of bullets that bounce off their adamantium armor. Powered by electricity, the tufts of muscle provide the Dreadnought with propulsion, as well as allowing them to fire a variety of weapons, attacking the enemy with all the ferocity they acquired back in their days as Space Marines. In addition to the fury of a real fighter, they are also very wise people who have accumulated knowledge over the centuries, which helps them solve the most difficult tactical problems during the battle. Almost nothing can stop an attacking Dreadnought, and their melee weapons are capable of tearing apart even an armored enemy tank. Dreadnoughts are very difficult to destroy and, in most cases, only the complete destruction of the sarcophagus can kill the pilot. Destroyed dreadnoughts are left on the battlefield only as a last resort. Usually Space Marines are ready to give their lives, recapturing a fallen Dreadnought from the enemy, in order to then bury the pilot in the burial grounds of the Order. The remains of the metal shell are then carefully restored to full working order, after which they await their new owner.

"Rhinoceros"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Rhino Armored Personnel Carrier is the backbone of every Space Marine Chapter's vehicle fleet. Having an optimal balance of armor, transport capacity and maneuverability, the Rhino allows Space Marines to quickly transfer their troops, urgently send teams to positions of strategic importance, or carry out pinpoint strikes against enemy defense lines.

Like most technology used by the Imperium, the Rhino's Standard Template Designs date back to the earliest days of the colonization era. Little has changed in the past millennia, as one of the Rhino's strongest advantages is its simple design and the ease of finding alternative ways to assemble and adapt fuel systems. In the past, much of the Imperium's war machine was based on the Rhino model, but now knowledge of its design and maintenance has been forgotten. Only Space Marines and a few other Imperial organizations can have the number of Rhinos that suits their needs.

The main advantage of the "Rhino" is its short duration and ease of repair. The fact is that most Rhinos contain elementary self-healing systems that can restore basic systems and control systems even after such serious damage that for many such vehicles they would be irreparable.

But such catastrophic damage is rare, as the Rhino's construction is incredibly strong. Give it time and whatever is necessary, and a skilled Techmarine can "walk out" even a horribly battered carcass, re-sanctifying it in the eyes of the Omnissiah and resurrecting it for the Chapter's righteous wars.

As a result, many Rhinos remain in service for several thousand years. During this time, almost every component and armor plate will be replaced or deemed in need of significant repairs, but the venerable Rhino name and designation will live on.

The Hammer of Nocturne is the oldest Rhino in existence, and belongs to the Order of the Salamanders. It is said that this venerable transport once carried the legendary Primarch Vulkan. It happened during the siege of Devlin's citadel, when the Primarch decided to make a sortie through the gates of the surrounded Imperial fortress into the very center of the Word Bearers' forces. The Hammer of Nocturne has served the Order for over eight thousand years and is now housed in the Salamander Reliquary. It is a great honor for a Techmarine to care for the Hammer's scarred pelt, whose every need is treated with devotion. At the start of each new century, the Chapter's Techmarines gather in the reliquary and the Master of the Forge presses a rune to activate the Hammer's engine. It is said that doom must befall the Salamanders if the engine does not start the first time.

"Predator"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Predator is the main battle tank of the Space Marines. As a base for the Predator, the Rhino chassis was used, equipped with more powerful armor and a turret for heavy weapons due to the elimination of the transport compartment. As a result, the space landing force received an armored mobile tank, which is equally capable of both holding a position and leading a tank assault on the most fortified sections of enemy territory.

The efficiency and durability of the Predator's design is proven by its long history. Indeed, according to the records of the Adeptus Mechanicus, this type of tank contributed to the establishment of human dominance in the galaxy as far back as the Dark Age of Technology. In those days, its decent firepower, coupled with enhanced armor, played a decisive role in containing the threat posed by alien races, primarily from the bestial orcs and the mysterious Eldar. Therefore, each Predator is a continuation of the history of serving the Imperium with one of the most magnificent weapons of war; a service that did not stain itself during the dark days of the Horus Heresy, purges and occlusions. Not surprisingly, the Predator has become an emblem of armored might, and its appearance has become as much a symbol of the Imperium as the aquila on its indestructible adamantium armor.

The Predator is a versatile tank that can be equipped with several weapon options. Two main types of this tank are currently used by the Space Marine Chapters. The Annihilator model is equipped with a turret-mounted autocannon, which is ideal for suppressing enemy light vehicles and infantry, while the Annihilator's twin laser cannon is deadly for heavy enemy vehicles. The firepower of both variants of the Predator can be further enhanced by sponsons-mounted heavy bolters or laser cannons, ensuring the Predator is never without the right weapon for the situation.

Most Chapters strive to strike a balance between these two modifications, although some still prefer one of the models. The Conquerors are perhaps the clearest example of this choice. Their fleet of Predators consists entirely of the Annihilator model, which shifts the main responsibility for the destruction of infantry to the Whirlwinds and to the Land Raiders of the Crusader model.

It is rare for a Space Marine Chapter to deploy all twenty or so Predators as an independent unit. The main function of this tank is to provide fire support to the infantry of the Order. To further highlight the tank's importance, each Predator created is given a name that reflects its role as protector of the Order's brethren.

Indeed, the personal name of the Predator may remain in the memory of a Space Marine Chapter long after the names of the crew have been forgotten by all but archivists. This is partly unsurprising, as each individual Predator tank can serve the Chapter for thousands of years under the control of a large number of crews who attribute a noble personality to their armored vehicle. The Heart of the Resistance, the Guardian of Orar and the Blade of Honor feature prominently in the tales of the Ultramarines, and their destruction is lamented as much as the deaths of the Chapter's great heroes.

"Vortex"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

As a largely mobile striking force of the Imperium, the Space Marines do not often burden themselves with the use of stationary artillery. However, the Codex Astartes recognizes the need for devastating fire support, especially when faced with large or mobile enemy units. It is important to suppress the forces of such an enemy at a distance, before he has the opportunity to realize a numerical advantage over the Space Marines. It was for such tasks that the Whirlwind self-propelled artillery mount was created.

The Whirlwind was designed on the basis of the Rhino transport and is now a lightly armored tank equipped with several rocket launchers capable of accurately bombarding enemy positions. Thanks to the target detection and tracking system, the Whirlwind can hit camouflaged and fortified targets with amazing accuracy. The standard configuration of the installation includes solid-fuel fragmentation rockets, produced two per programmable salvo. Sophisticated telemetry equipment "Whirlwind" guarantees maximum effectiveness of shelling and gives better results than the use of conventional fragmentation shells.

In addition, the Vikhr launcher is capable of firing Kastellan-class incendiary projectiles. In this case, the filling of the explosive warhead is replaced by a flammable chemical mixture, which, when exploded, covers the battlefield with a wave of all-consuming flame. Even the most fortified positions are not able to protect the enemy from prolonged bombardment by Castellan shells - if the enemy is not burned alive in the fire, the terrible acid fumes will immediately turn his insides into a bloody mess.

Any Space Marine commander appreciates the agility and overwhelming firepower that the skilled crew of the Whirlwind can display. Bombardment of enemy fortifications, fire support, barrage - the use of this installation will give amazing results in any situation. The artillery strikes of the Whirlwind inspire fear in many opponents. History knows many examples when the leaders of the orcs used large detachments of warriors only to detect and destroy the Whirlwind batteries. However, these detachments fell into traps set by the wise commander, who foresaw such a development of events. Some Chapters amplify the psychological effect of shelling by modifying the shells so that they make terrifying shrill sounds as they streak across the sky. Sometimes this alone is enough to drive the enemy out of hiding and allow the Space Marine forces to continue their advance unhindered.

"Land Raider"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Land Raider is based on the almost mythical Standard Template Design or STC technology, and its design predates the rise of the Imperium itself. It was rediscovered by the techno-mage Arkhan Land at the dawn of the Imperium.

When exactly the Imperial Land Raider first entered combat is now the subject of ongoing debate among Imperial archaeologists. Some claim that it was during the Siege of Delebrion when the Land Raider first unleashed the wrath of its lascannons, others point to the massive tank battle on Calisto Platinum and say that the Land Raider drew the first blood during this conflict that raged on planet at the start of the Emperor's Great Crusade. The Land Raider's popularity with the Imperial forces was overwhelming. An entire factory world, Anvilus IX, was completely repurposed to produce the Land Raider, and the project spread throughout the galaxy.

At that time, the Land Raider was used by almost all human forces, including the Space Marines and the Imperial Army. During the first two hundred years of operation, there was not a single battlefield that would not have experienced the temper of this awesome military mechanism. After High Commander Horus bombarded Isstvan V with virus warheads and the Great Heresy engulfed the galaxy, Anvilus IX was captured by traitorous tech-priests, causing the influx of Land Raiders to suddenly dwindle to a trickle of a handful of factory worlds still loyal to the Emperor. At that time, many of the Factory Worlds decided to secede from the Imperium instead of joining either side. Due to the threat of a siege of Earth by the forces of the High Commander, the Emperor made the decision to withdraw all Land Raiders from his loyal units, for the exclusive use of the Legions Astartes, who were in the thick of the battle.

The Land Raider was vital to both sides during the fierce battle that was to seal the fate of the Imperium. It was one of the few vehicles that could, when deployed in sufficient numbers, contain and even destroy the massive titans of the Adeptus Mechanicus, while its ability to fight in virtually any warzone imaginable, including the sea floor and the most corrosive atmospheres, meant it would stand still. no longer than any other combat vehicle. The heresy was eventually crushed by the Emperor's sacrifice, but with the Emperor's ascension to the Golden Throne, no one dared to reverse His order for the exclusive use of the Land Raiders by the Space Marines. Thus, it has remained unchanged for the last ten thousand years.

The Land Raider is perfect for the highly mobile war waged by the Adeptus Astartes. Like the Space Marines, the heavily armored Land Raider is capable of fighting in almost any environment, including dangerous environments, complete vacuums, or high planetary gravity. The Land Raider provides substantial protection when transporting a squad of Space Marines, and carries enough heavy weaponry to provide significant fire support once its passengers have landed on the battlefield. On death worlds and other hostile environments, the Land Raider's airborne stores allow Space Marines to replenish their power armor's environmental and energy systems, giving them greater operational window.

In combat, the squad usually unloads, leaving the Land Raider to fight on its own. The variety of Land Raider weapons allows it to perform various combat missions on the battlefields. In most cases, it is used as a mobile command post, its thick armor capable of withstanding almost any field weapon. In this role, several Land Raiders can form a defensive line against an enemy counterattack or create a virtually impenetrable enclave within enemy-held territory. Its twin lascannons are the best anti-tank weapons for vehicles of this size, so Orks often refer to Land Raiders as "Kan-Blastaz". Combined with heavy bolters, the Land Raider's firepower can take on entire squadrons of light transports and tear apart heavily armored infantry units.

The Land Raider outperforms virtually every other battle tank in the Imperium. Its ability to carry units means it can have its own infantry support, no matter how far behind the front lines it is forced to operate. The Land Raider carries on board everything necessary for the needs of its crew and passengers, including medical equipment, life support systems and a shrine to ensure spiritual purity. The triple, redundant data bank of analytical engines and communications hardware provides superior command and control capabilities, allowing the Land Raider to serve as a mobile base for squads, giving them an excellent opportunity to fight deep behind enemy lines.

"Land Speeder"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Land Speeder used by the Space Marines is an improved example of the Standard Template Design discovered shortly after the Horus Heresy. The ancient technology used to create the repulsion platform allowed the Land Speeder to glide through the planet's gravity field and maneuver at low altitudes that conventional aircraft could not reach.

Early models of the Land Speeder were lightly armored, but millennia later, the design was reinforced with light adamantium armor. The armor is not installed to protect the crew - power armor provides much better protection than the Land Speeder's most reliable armor, but to protect the fragile control units, without which the Land Speeder is nothing more than a large piece of machined metal, unable to fly.

All Space Marines are trained to fly the Land Speeder in squadrons as part of their assault squad training, but more often than not, the Land Speeder is piloted by battle brothers capable of handling the speeds the aircraft develops. Most Land Speeder pilots are regarded as daredevils by their battle brothers. Indeed, no man in his right mind, no matter how brave, would perform all those dizzying low-altitude combat maneuvers that the apparatus is capable of. Land Speeder pilots, without hesitation, fly close to the tops of rocks, maneuver between trees, break into a steep dive or make a "barrel", avoiding enemy fire. Considering the mental and physical strain required to perform such maneuvers, the fact that very few Land Speeders were lost to pilot error can only be attributed to the superhuman reflexes and endurance of the Space Marines piloting the Land Speeders.

A flexible choice of weapons allows the Land Speeder to be used for a wide range of combat missions, from lightly armed reconnaissance and scout landings, to tank hunting and other search and destruction tasks.

The Land Speeder's gravity engine does not support high-altitude flight, but allows for a controlled descent from the upper atmosphere. This allows the Land Speeder to launch from a high-altitude Stormhawk gunship and attack an unsuspecting enemy from above.

Although Land Speeders are more commonly used to support other types of troops, they can also be (and are) used for massive attacks. Several Space Marine Chapters routinely use a high-speed and nearly unstoppable wave of Land Speeders to break through a line of defense, which is then swept in by Rhino armored personnel carriers with tactical units aboard. Then the Land Speeder flotilla turns around and attacks the next target, once again bringing destruction.

Commander

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Each company of a Space Marine Chapter is under the command of a Captain. Each captain is a seasoned veteran, a seasoned strategist who has proven his or her prowess in combat as a member of the Order's First Company or by distinguished service in his company until the death of his predecessor.

In addition to their position in the Order, each captain is also given one or more honorary titles, indicating the command of a particular company or the assumption of certain duties. Some, such as Master of the Guard and Master of Recruits, are common titles in the vast majority of Space Marine Chapters. Other titles are born from the history and doctrines of the Order. The captain of the Fourth Company of the White Scars traditionally holds the title of Master of the Hunt, and the Order of the Claws of Aurora has at least five Master Bombardiers in the command hierarchy.

The captains of the Space Marine Chapters are masters of the battlefield, able to read its ebb and flow, as ancient sailors read the waves of the sea. It is not enough for a captain to simply be a skilled fighter - every Chapter prides itself on a sufficient number of such men - he must also have a superhuman understanding of strategy and tactics, as well as the intelligence to use them in the ever-changing arena of warfare. Each squad of Space Marines is a weapon, and the captain must skillfully use each, both separately and together.

It is often said that, by military standards, each Space Marine is worth a dozen Imperial Guardsmen. Under the guidance of an experienced captain, this ratio grows tenfold. Such power is not used lightly or recklessly, but with the clarity brought by meditation. Every Space Marine lost in battle is a heavy blow to the Chapter, and if loss is inevitable, lives must be sacrificed for good reasons and honorably.

A Space Marine captain is not just a master of war, he must also be an excellent speaker and diplomat. While most Imperial commanders are more than happy to receive help from the Space Marines, there are those whose arrogance must be overcome by negotiation to prevent the chaos of battle in troubled territory from turning into a disaster through unnecessary fighting.

Not that a Space Marine captain would balk at other methods of cooperation over minor infighting - how Kayvaan Shrike of the Raven Guard quickly settled the dispute in his favor, executing the hesitant Lord Cardinal Dostok without hesitation. More subtle methods of persuasion and negotiation are often used in gloomy situations - punitive measures can be applied when the crisis has passed. A Space Marine does not bend the knee for no reason, but the will of the Emperor transcends any personal feelings. The mission is above all else. Humanity will be saved from its own mistakes, world after world, if need be.

Assault Squad equipped with jump packs, necessary for a quick approach to the enemy. Additional upgrades include flash grenades and melta bombs.

Ravager Squad with Heavy Bolter equipped with weapons to suppress large detachments of enemy infantry. The weapon has a limited range and takes time to deploy in combat.

Ravager Squad with Plasma Cannon effective when necessary to dislodge enemy infantry or equipment from fortified positions. The weapon has a limited sector of fire and takes time to deploy in combat.

scout troop- Shotguns or sniper rifles are available as upgrades. In addition, any of these upgrades grants the Disguise ability. A sergeant can be added to the squad, which makes it possible to use fragmentation grenades.

Detachment of tactical paratroopers- Infantry capable of performing a wide range of combat missions. Various weapon upgrades are possible.

Terminator Squad- veterans of thousands of campaigns, are

the most powerful heavy infantry. Extremely durable, immune to suppression and able to teleport.

Assault Terminator Squad- the same as the terminators, but without ranged weapons. Instead, they have huge potential and are practically indestructible in close combat.

"Land Raider Crusader"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Crusader Model Land Raider, in service with many Space Marine Chapters, first appeared with the Black Templars during the Jerusalem Crusade in 645.M39. Preachers from Missionarus Galaxia first appeared in this long-isolated system and wished to bring it back to the Light of the Emperor.

But these worlds flourished and have already lived for centuries without the intervention of an alien regime. The first missionaries were killed, their ships destroyed. But others followed. And they didn't come alone. With them were the Black Templars of the Jerusalem Crusade. Led by none other than the great tactician, High Marshal Ludoldus, veteran of the bloody Vincilus Crusade and mastermind of the Morator Crusade, the Black Templars crushed the resistance of the frontier worlds and made their way to the system's core planets.

The periphery worlds fell quickly, but the Hive World of Ierulas itself proved to be a veritable fortress. Countless assaults were carried out by the Black Templars - each entailed heavy losses, but did not foreshadow the end of the campaign. Regardless, it was only a matter of time before famine and water shortages put an end to the resistance. But Ludoldus was not happy with this decision. At a meeting of the castellan, he announced that the crusade would only be ended with a chainsword blade or a bolter shot.

Faced with such solid defenses, the Marines could not turn the tide of war until they discovered ancient techno-magic in the depths of one of the captured hive cities. After examining tattered scrolls and illegible holo-blueprints, Artisan Marine Seamagus discovered something that led to the development of one of the Imperium's most formidable tanks, the Crusader Model Land Raider.

The "Crusader" was created specifically to break through the defenses of a well-entrenched enemy. An enlarged passenger compartment allowed a large squad of Space Marines or Terminators to be delivered right into the heart of the enemy, and armor-mounted fragmentation charge launchers filled the air with deadly shrapnel. Several other Chapters requested the information needed to convert a conventional Land Raider into a Crusader as soon as word of its success spread. In 763.M39 the "Crusader" model was officially recognized by the tech-priests of Mars (in fact, an empty formality - by this time the blueprints had already spread to hundreds of Orders).

The Crusader allowed the Black Templars to penetrate deep into the Traitor hive cities, which simply had nothing to counter their deadly attack. Each of the city-spires fell during the first siege, and a month later the rest of the hives that remained in the hands of the enemy surrendered to the mercy of the Black Templars.

"Land Raider Redeemer"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The most grueling of battles are fought among the rubble-strewn and precarious surroundings of a ruined city. Under such conditions, poorly equipped and uncoordinated troops can hold off the best warriors in the galaxy for many months. The opposing sides hide in a labyrinth of ruined structures, taking refuge among the rockcrete ruins and using thousands of vantage points to snipe the enemy. For the Space Marines, whose ideal is a lightning war won before the defender realizes that they have to fight at all, this situation is unacceptable: the enemy must be driven from their stronghold and this must happen quickly. In such battles, only fire will cleanse the nest of the enemy. For the sake of such battles, the heavy tank "Land Raider" - "Redeemer" was created.

Since the Crusader was a modification of the original Land Raider, the Redeemer became the next stage in the evolution of this tank model. The Redeemer retained the Crusader's assault cannon and frag grenade launchers, but ditched a pair of Hurricane sponson bolters in favor of massive flamethrowers that send a roiling stream of burning promethium into the enemy's midst. Combined with the Redeemer's sophisticated targeting systems, these "firestorm" weapons are capable of scorching even a heavily defended bunker system from the inside in a matter of seconds.

The Redeemer first saw the light among the ruined cities of Grisen, a once-prosperous planet torn apart by a civil war that could last for millennia. And all because of a clerical error in the labyrinths of the bureaucracy of the Imperium. The situation on Grisen would never have been noticed if a mid-level official had not discovered that the planetary tithes were late by about eight thousand years. In order for the imperial law to reign on Grisen again, a regiment of the Imperial Guard was immediately raised. When it became clear that the regiment was unable to suppress the resistance of the planetary forces, the expeditionary force of the Order of the Lords of Fire under the command of Captain Yarik Foros joined the battle.

At first, the Space Marines had little success. The natives were so well entrenched that even the most devastating orbital bombardments did little damage to their positions. However, the Imperial directive stated that Grisen should be returned to the fold of the Imperium, as this world would be an excellent base for replenishing the Imperial Guard. This deterred Phoros from ordering the exterminatus of the planet.

Pushing aside his growing sense of discontent, the captain ordered his Techmarines to create a weapon with which he would win the war. Within a week of the first modifications to the Land Raider, the Firelords took Grisen's capital. A month later, the largest planetary faction was already pleading for peace, and Grisen became part of the Imperium again.

After the campaign on Grisene, Foros distributed the schematics for the new tank model. Endowed with a caustic mind, he named the new specimen "Prometheus" in honor of the god from the ancient legends of Terra, who brought fire to people. He changed the designation to "Redeemer" only when he learned that the name had already been taken by the Salamanders for their tank variant. However, the very first "Redeemer" still serves in the Second Company of the Firelords, and the name "Prometheus" still glitters on its sides and is honored in the archives of the Order.

"Land Raider Prometheus"

The Prometheus is a fairly rare model of the famous Space Marine Land Raider. Only a few Chapters operate the Prometheus, which is commonly used as a command transport due to its sensors and additional communications equipment. The presence of these systems allows commanders to better coordinate both the attacks of individual units and the actions of the entire army.

The Prometheus's armament is perfect for its role as a command tank. It is equipped with four twin heavy bolters, which, although they do not have the firepower of a conventional Land Raider, are ideal for destroying heavy infantry and light tanks. The advanced tracking and target acquisition system provides additional benefits, especially against fairly difficult targets such as enemy skimmers. All this makes the Prometheus a very flexible means of warfare, while at the same time allowing it to play the role of a headquarters transport.

Its origin remains a mystery, but the similarity of the Prometheus and Tartarus models cannot be denied. Rumor has it that the Prometheus is the product of the Order of the Salamanders. This seems to be true, because the Salamanders have more "Prometheans" at their disposal than any other Order. But wherever they are created, it is known that their total number is very small. So, for example, the White Scars have only four of these tanks for the entire Order.

The most famous battles involving Prometheans recorded in the annals of the Imperium took place during the military campaign on Masali. The Eldar forces then attacked the citizens of the Imperium under the jurisdiction of Ultramar. They fell upon Masali with monstrous cruelty, killing every person who met on their way. Why the mediocre agricultural world was attacked with such fury is still a mystery. But whatever the reason, the reaction of the Ultramarines was lightning fast - with typical efficiency - an army was sent from neighboring Ultramar.

The Eldar fought with choreographed precision, striking blow after blow at key points in the Ultramarines army such as ammunition depots and supply depots, driving the Space Marine forces into defensive positions and weakening their positions on Masali.

It was at one of these bases that Commander Sicarius oversaw the loading of weapons when the Eldar attacked the warehouses. Sicarius had only two squads, a Land Speeder and a personal Prometheus, while the Eldar outnumbered Sicarius by at least three to one. Using the Prometheus as a defensive line and placing squads on either side of it, Sicarius blocked the Eldar's path to the warehouses, but they calmly continued to approach. It was then that the Prometheus showed itself - its four twin heavy bolters mowed down all the approaching guards. Thanks to his advanced target-locking system, he was able to bring his bolters to bear on the Eldar jetbikes supporting their main force, something that had always been a big problem until then. Ordinary bolters did not pose much of a threat to the Eldar machines, but the Prometheus' heavy bolters destroyed them without difficulty.

After that, Sicarius drew his trump card from his sleeve - he gave the order to advance the rest of his forces, who were at a distance of several miles. The assault troops appeared at exactly the right time and, using their jump packs, landed right behind the Eldar. The Prometheus and the squads under its cover went on the attack. The battle was fierce, but the combat training and courage of the Space Marines had them overcome the remaining Eldar survivors. After the aliens were surrounded, their attack bogged down, and they were all destroyed as ruthlessly as they themselves destroyed the citizens of the Imperium.

To this day, the Prometheus remains the most valuable element of the Ultramarines' weaponry.

"Land Raider Helios"

The Helios is a minimally modified model of the standard Land Raider, with its twin heavy bolter replaced with a rocket launcher from the Whirlwind. This replacement turns the regular Land Raider into a long-range artillery support tank.

This model was first created by the Techmarines of the Red Scorpions Chapter when additional artillery support was needed during the siege of Helios. The Red Scorpion Whirlwinds alone could not generate the required fire density, and the Marines were reluctant to call for support from the Imperial Guard units.

Whirlwind is still the standard siege tank for all Chapters, but Helios is common in many of them, because the flexibility of this weapon variant allows it to be used in cases where additional artillery support is urgently needed.

"Land Speeder Storm"

The Storm-class Land Speeder is a substantially revised version of the original model, sacrificing standard heavy weapons for a slight increase in capacity. As a result, the device was able to transport small groups of scouts without losing speed and maneuverability. What's more, quiet engines and improved reconnaissance and search equipment make the Storm an ideal choice for scouts for stealth pinpoint strikes. Depending on the assigned combat mission, the "Storm" can be used as a mobile fire support, an assault transport or an apparatus for covert penetration into enemy territory.

To further enhance their effectiveness in strike operations, many Chapters are replacing their standard underslung heavy bolter with the Cerberus Launcher, a three-barreled cannon that fires volleys of fragmentation, shock and flash rockets, after which the Scouts can only land on enemy positions and finish off the survivors.

Combined with its high speed, the Cerberus Launcher allows Scouts to make quick and daring assaults against seemingly insurmountable enemy defenses with impunity.

Thus, waking up one morning, the crazed ruler of Amar found his outer bastions unexpectedly overrun by the Howling Griffons and his own artillery batteries, now commanded by Space Marine scouts, were raining shells on the inner palace. Carried out with a level of stealth and precision that neither a conventional troop drop nor a desperate assault in Rhino armored personnel carriers can provide, this operation marked a turning point in the crushing of the Amar separatists and ensured the continued existence of the Storm-class Land Speeder model.

"Champion"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The Vindicator is a siege tank derived from the Rhino, carrying the most devastating weapon in the Space Marine arsenal, the Destroyer.

The need to mount a large-caliber weapon on the Rhino's hull arose during the early years of the Horus Heresy, during the ferocious urban fighting on the streets of Rothern I. Traitor forces had turned labyrinths of passageways and rockcrete structures into terrifying defenses, and loyalist forces needed to find a way to deliver weapons capable of destroying bunkers to the right places among the cramped streets. The huge Thunderbolt guns were mounted on a redesigned and additionally armored Rhino chassis. Thus was born the "Champion" - the main weapon of victory in the company on Rothern I and an essential part of the arsenal of any Space Marine Chapter.

In the millennia since the Heresy, the "Champion" has been called upon again and again to bring the Emperor's justice to the enemies of mankind. The logic that led to the birth of the "Champion" is as solid at the end of the 41st millennium as it was ten thousand years ago. Among the intertwining streets of hive worlds or other similar places, the Vindicator is unparalleled. Where other vehicles are quickly outflanked, the Vindicator can simply destroy the obstacle in its path and drive through the ruins.

Despite its overwhelming success, the Vindicator has undergone significant changes over the centuries. Moreover, there are a number of upgrades and technological tweaks made to this model over the past time. The most significant of these changes was the replacement of the bulky "Thunderer" cannon with the more compact, but no less powerful "Destroyer" cannon. Many other changes have been made to the management mechanisms; armor was changed, some models received a fire suppression system, creating from what was essentially a construction from improvised means in the field - the workhorse of siege warfare, which became the Vindicator by the end of the 41st millennium.

While the Vindicators remained the kings of street warfare, their combat role expanded significantly as they became widespread. For the Space Marines, the relatively short range of the Destroyer cannon is not critical to the brutal close combat of armored units. Rarely will there not be a single Vindicator at the forefront of a Space Marine tank attack.

In major battles, a squad of Vindicators will flank, unleash their punitive might and support the Land Raiders. During small skirmishes, the Vindicator can itself be the spearhead of a line of battle, punching holes in enemy fortifications and paving the way for infantry.

"Cleaver"

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

The vast arsenals of the Space Marines contain many varieties of war machines. Some have been in use for thousands of years, while others like the Cleaver have only recently been rediscovered. The Cleaver is a heavily armed variant of the Rhino infantry transport that sacrifices some of its vehicle capacity in favor of mounting turret weapons, usually in the form of twin heavy bolters or laser cannons.

Standard combat doctrine says Cleaver transports should be deployed as fire support transports, escorting Rhino transports or infantry teams into the heart of the battle. Since Rhino transports are not as strong in terms of firepower, even a single Cleaver attached to them as an escort can significantly increase the effectiveness of the strike.

Impressed by its versatility, several Chapters began to use the Cleaver in other areas, using it as a mobile command center and heavy reconnaissance cover.

Despite the Cleaver's proven effectiveness, some Space Marine Chapters still view it with distrust, claiming it is "new" technology, still not well proven in battle.

There is a certain logic to this opinion - the Cleaver has been used for only four thousand years, while the Rhino and Predator fought even before the Horus Heresy. But the fact that most of the Chapters have adopted the Cleaver as the cornerstone of their operating doctrines proves that such a suspicious attitude is unjustified.

Sometime in the future, the Cleaver may replace the Rhino as the Space Marines' primary transport. However, for this to happen, it will require the Cleaver to prove its worth to the stalwart traditionalists, who in turn will demand that the Cleaver prove its worth in the never-ending battle for humanity's survival.

Motorcycle department

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine from A to Z

Space Marine Motorcycle Squads perform speed-critical assault missions, most often relying on intelligence gathered by Scout squads or Land Speeder crews during reconnaissance flights. Motorcycle Squads attack at incredible speeds, using surprise and unstoppable momentum, thrusting into enemy lines and charging into the distance as soon as the enemy regains the ability to act consciously, only to turn around and attack again from an unexpected direction. The dagger strikes of the Motorcycle Squads are like lightning - when the enemy hears their approach, the damage has already been done.

For the Space Marine motorcyclist to operate at maximum efficiency, the superhuman rider and his iron horse must work flawlessly as one. Therefore, the Codex Astartes requires all Chapter stormtroopers, scouts, and the entire 6th Company to learn the art of combat on motorcycles, including this item in their training regimen.

Some Chapters go even further, and each of their Marines is required to train to ride a motorcycle, even if he is a long time member of the First Company or has achieved a high rank. Few Chapters exemplify this approach better than the Order of the White Scars, who proudly make their Motorcycle Squads the core of any attack. Other Chapters are less enamored with the tactical value of motorcycle squads, preferring to send stormtroopers into battle on Rhinos or Cleavers.

The Space Marine's motorcycle itself is rather crudely made. This is necessary because it must be powerful enough to carry a fully equipped Space Marine at breakneck speeds, yet manageable enough to allow for a full range of lethal combat maneuvers. Even at low speed, meeting the combined mass of the motorcycle and the driver is not the most pleasant thing. What's more, experienced Space Marine riders can boast of riding through rockcrete walls at full speed with no harm or inconvenience at all. The effect of such a breakthrough on enemy manpower is best left to the imagination.

For difficult assault missions, it is common to increase the firepower of the Motorcycle Squad by adding an assault motorcycle. Each Assault Bike is an intimidatingly powerful mobile gun emplacement, with twin bolters mounted on the bike itself and a multi-melta or heavy bolter attached to a sturdy sidecar.

The striking power of the assault bike is so intoxicating that many Chapters form entire squads of them, using them as fast fire support troops to supplement scouts, stormtroopers or other motorcycle squads. Few Space Marine Chapters have enough assault bikes to form numerous squads. But when it does happen, as happened during the Third War for Armageddon initiated by the Order of the White Scars, such squads become an almost unstoppable force.

Dreadnought- Heavy walking combat vehicle. The sight of a Dreadnought destroying an enemy inspires nearby soldiers, temporarily increasing the damage dealt by their weapons. Has the ability "Emperor's Fist", "Assault Cannon" and "Dark Age of Technology" upgrades.
