The icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Desperate One Hope was painted in the twentieth century, presumably somewhere in Ukraine. For its gentle and peaceful image, it became widespread among the Orthodox (mainly in Ukraine), despite the fact that it was written in a Catholic style, and not according to Orthodox canons. Although there are single “reworkings” of this icon under the Orthodox canons, nevertheless, on many other copies of this icon, the hair sticks out from under the scarf, there is no symbolic image of stars on the shoulders and head, the colors of the robes of the Virgin “in reverse” and similar things that are unusual for Orthodox icons. Due to the lack of information about the origin of this image, and because of the too free attitude to the Orthodox canons, so far the status of the icon cannot be considered Orthodox.

For your information: since the features of Catholic iconography have somehow flowed into Orthodox iconography over the past centuries, and in the absence of another more Orthodox icon, I know other Orthodox people involved in the iconography of the Mother of God who do not openly accept this icon and do not consider it Orthodox.

ICON PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

For the manufacture of the icon, a well-dried linden board is taken. On icons whose dimensions exceed 13x16 cm, oak dowels are inserted from the back of the board - this contributes to the longevity of the icon and the preservation of its magnificence. The reverse side, as well as the side surfaces of the future icon, are treated with heated wax. The front side is carefully sanded and primed: gesso is applied, which traditionally consists of finely sifted and ground chalk and glue of animal origin, such as fish. Levkas is applied to the board in 2-3 layers, each layer is dried and polished. Then another type of soil is applied - polyment, which is made of red clay and serves to fix gold leaf, marvelous in its beauty, on the surface of the board. Finally, the image itself is painted with tempera paints. At the last stage, the front surface of the icon is covered with a special varnish. The skill and skillful execution by the icon painter of the technology developed over the centuries is a guarantee that the icon will not lose the brightness of colors over time, will not fade and will patronize the faithful for many years, delighting their eyes and hearts

In Orthodoxy, more than 800 (!) Images of the Virgin are known. Two thousand years have already passed since the day the Savior was raised to the cross. And gospel characters continue to inspire artists to create new icons. "The Desperate One Hope" is an example of a contemporary image painted by an unknown author.

Canonicality is a big question

Being in disgrace for a long time, Orthodoxy in Russia began to recover only in the early 1990s. After a rather long break, we have to revive traditions among people who never had them, because they grew up in atheistic families. It's pretty difficult. Therefore, in such matters as the canonicity of icons, there are still disagreements. We can definitely say that any icon of the Virgin:

is a shrine;
it is also an object of church use;
piece of art.

How does this apply to Desperate One Hope? Obviously, among the population, he received recognition rather quickly, the degree of canonicity will be determined over time. Many modern masters do not want to study for a long time, arguing that the old samples are “outdated”. The images created in modern times have, in the opinion of the clergy, a number of significant shortcomings.

Luxury in the image of the situation.
Excess jewelry, excessive use of gilding.
Glamorous and kitsch style.
Insufficient expressiveness of faces.

Concentrating for prayer in front of such a "shrine" will be really difficult. Some versions of the icon of the Mother of God "Desperate One Hope" also have a number of these shortcomings. The baby, for example, is depicted very much like an angel from a popular print postcard. A half-naked chubby little body and at the same time a completely meaningless look. This really happens in babies. But could he be such with Christ, the Savior of the world?

What's wrong with the image

On many icons of the "Desperate One Hope" around the heads of St. Mary and the Child are missing the haloes traditional for Orthodox icon painting and the necessary inscriptions. Many are also confused by the clothes of the Mother of God. The cape is blue, the tunic is red. Usually shown the other way around.

On the head - a simple scarf, when usually outerwear covers both the head and the hairstyle, also almost completely hiding the figure and hands. Here the cape is open. On the icon of the Mother of God "Desperate One Hope" Mary's hair is visible, it is knocked out from under the scarf. The crown, which is present on a number of options, does not fit into the general meaning of the composition at all. It is small, decorated with a cross (not always) and pearls.
